Abstract
In this paper, the superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) which is integrated into a high-voltage direct current-wind farm system is applied to limit the fault current. At normal operation, the SMES is used to smooth the power fluctuation due to the wind farm. When the fault takes place, the SMES coil is connected to the DC line automatically and suppress the fault current. The new circuit configuration and control strategy of SMES with fault current limiting function is proposed. Study results shows the power smoothing and fault current limiting effect of the proposed control of SMES.
