In view of the stringent quality requirements for solid dielectric bushing, a wide range of quality assurance techniques is applied. High frequency testing is by far the most effective destructive test for screening and rejecting poor quality insulation bushing. This paper presents the design and construction of a tesla transformer for defective insulation testing. The attempts of developing a prototype have low cost of all components. A design technique and testing method will be fully given. The calculation is based on the stress control so that the optimum electric stress can be obtained. A high frequency generator has been tested and used in bushing factory for routine tested according to TIS. 354-2523 (Thai Industrial Standard). From the results, the prototype unit has accuracy with in acceptable level.

This paper presents a design of the cable connector used in partial discharge and dielectric loss tests. The body of the connector is constructed using the acrylic tube and PVC, and the oil is used as an insulating medium. In order to implement the connector, partial discharges and the dielectric loss (tan δ) of a cable are tested according to IEC standards. It is found that the cable connector proposed can give the satisfactory and reasonably accurate results from the measurements. In addition, the cost of the construction of the connector developed is cheaper than that of the commercial module.

A high voltage with high frequency oscillation waveshape, nowadays, is used as a standard test for electrical power equipment. A Tesla transformer is one of the sources that can generate such a waveshape. This paper presents a design and a construction of a Tesla transformer used in insulator tests. The output of the transformer has a rate of 200 kV and 200 kHz. The output waveshape is controlled based on the L-C resonance circuit. The transformer is implemented for insulator tests. It is found that the accuracy of the output obtained from the Tesla transformer is in the satisfactory level.

This paper presents an investigation on the failure of low voltage power capacitors used in the textile industrial located on Thailand. The causes of the failure as well as the failure mechanisms of the dielectric used as the insulation of such capacitors are analyzed. It is found that the harmonic resonance can increase the current flowing through the capacitors. This result in the extra heat, generated inside the dielectric, which exceeds the level under the normal operation. Such heat results in the increase of the partial discharge inside the capacitors. This can eventually lead to the reduction of the lifetime of the capacitors.
