Raman spectroscopy is a set of techniques based on Raman scattering properties, widely applied to analyze the composition of various substances. The techniques consist of 1) backscattering, which collects Raman signals scattered from the surface of a sample; and 2) transmission, which collects Raman signals transmitted by the surface of a sample in the opposite direction of a light source (which triggers less fluorescence than backscattering). In this paper, we will measure the Raman spectrum of acetone solution by the transmission Raman spectroscopy and the backscattering Raman spectroscopy systems that we set up. Those accessories we use are a 532-nanometer diode laser with 100 milliwatt power as the light source, a focusing lens, an objective lens used for amplifying the Raman signals scattered from the sample, and a long-pass filter used to block light with a wavelength shorter than 532 nanometers. For the experimental samples, there are acetone solutions each prepared at 1M, 3M, 5M, 7M, 9M, 11M, and 13M. In the results of this experiment, we found that the intensity of Raman peaks for each Raman shift of acetone and the molar concentrations of acetone measured by both systems have a linear function in the backscattering Raman system and have a quadratic function in the transmissions Raman system because in backscattering system have noise by fluorescence effect more than in transmission system and it might be the effect of the Beer-Lambert law.

In this paper, we derive a recursive transfer-matrix method (RTMM) and use the method to analyse the problem of second-harmonic generation (SHG) in a one-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal (1D-NPC) under oblique incidence of fundamental-frequency (FF) wave and nondepleted pump approximation. This method is very simple and useful for determining SHG conversion efficiency at various incident angles of FF wave and thicknesses of nonlinear layer. The RTMM calculation results show that a maximum SHG conversion efficiency can be produced by the strong local FF field confinement in 1D-NPC due to optimal incidence angle and nonlinear layer thickness.

In this research, virtual X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD) using acoustic wave for material science education has been proposed. Acoustic wave with frequency in ultrasonic range has been used to characterize acoustic crystal structures. The dimensions of model structure, which are in order of ultrasonic wavelength region, have been formed by three dimensional printer (3D printer) and cotton swab. The angle of ultrasonic source and detector have been swept to record reflected wave signal of each angle. The peak of each angle have been selected to calculate lattice spacing by Bragg's law and then compared with the implemented structure. The results show signal peaks of each diffracted angle. The experimental results showed that the lattice spacing values obtained from acoustic experiment were in good agreement with the measured values of the implemented structure. This virtual XRD system provide to be an efficient tool for understanding about crystal structure characterization.

A generation of cross-polarized wave (XPW) in nonlinear hyperbolic metamaterials (NHMM), which are composed of periodic arrangement of gold (Au) and barium difluoride (BaF <inf>2</inf> ) layers with subwavelength thickness for exhibiting anisotropy of permittivity and third-order nonlinearity, has been investigated numerically. This cubic nonlinear effect is described by degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) of three linearly polarized fields and one produced field, which has linear polarization in orthogonal direction. By managing the fill-factor value of the NHMM, the nearly phase-matched condition based on hyperbolic phase-matching (HPM) technique are achieved implicitly. We found that the conversion efficiencies of XPW generation as a function of incident angle at various pumping intensities are maximized at optimal incident angle.

In this paper, we discuss the digital holography (DH) experiment in our optical and communication laboratory course for undergraduate students at Physics department, KMITL. The purposes of DH experiment are presenting our students the meaning and advantage of DH and its applications. The Gabor configurations of in-line DH has been set up for recording a number of samples, which were placed on different distances, simultaneously. Then, the images of all objects have been numerical reconstructed by using computer. The students have been learned that all of reconstructed images have been got from only one time recording, while using the conventional recording technique, sharp images of different objects have been gotten from different recording time. The students also have been learned how to use DH technique for investigation some different kinds of samples on their own of interested such as a human hair or a fingerprint. In our future work, our DH system will be developed to be a portable apparatus for easily showing to children in different areas.

In this research, two-wave coupling in photorefractive lithium niobate crystal has been used to do imaging enhancement of digital holography (DH) system. The image bearing beam of in-line DH system has been incident and interfered with a reference beam that was emerged from the same laser on a LiNbO<inf>3</inf> crystal. With certain angles between both beams, the energy of the reference beam was transferred to the image bearing beam then resulted the enhancement of the reconstructed image of the DH system. By using the suitable intensity of laser beam with a right PR crystal, the image from an in-line DH imaging system would be improved.

In this paper we propose a modern technique to evaluate the shape changes of solder paste by using double-view in-line digital holography. We observed the transformation of three different kinds of solder paste composition: pure solder paste, solder paste mixed with 0.02%, 0.05%, 0.10% graphene (GPN) and 0.02%, 0.05%, 0.10% graphene oxide (GPNO), respectively. The shape of the solder pastes was investigated at different melt temperatures (i.e. 200°C, 250°C, and 300°C) for 30 seconds using a collimated beam propagating through the solder paste, then being double reflected on a mirror and second incident on another sides of the solder paste. The double images bearing beams were recorded with a CCD sensor simultaneously. The single recorded digital hologram from double view technique was reconstructed using digital holography. The results show that the double-view technique provides reliably data. Moreover, it would be developed for observing more than two images by single holography writing in the future.

In this research, the low cost optical tweezers systems using X-Y stage has been developed by using 5-phase stepping motor. By using sequential double coil driving, we can obtain the driving torque larger than using the single coil driving. The moving scale is fine resolution at 0.2 micrometer. The overall systems based on microcontroller PIC18F458 and joystick controller with LabView® graphical user interface (GUI). The mechanical damping has been included in the system for decreasing the vibrational noise. By using this method, our optical tweezers system is cheaper than the other commercial system that has been used the piezoelectric driving, and still has the same efficiency. © 2013 SPIE.
