Porous antimicrobial crosslinked film of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose/carboxymethyl starch incorporating gallic acid for wound dressing application
    (2024-01-01)

Because of weak mechanical qualities and low degree of swelling of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose/carboxymethyl starch (HP/CMS) blended films for wound dressing application, this work prepared a unique antimicrobial crosslinked film utilizing succinic acid (SA) as a non-toxic crosslinker and gallic acid (GAL) as an antibacterial agent. It was observed that the infrared-shifted peak position of O[sbnd]H stretching and bending in HP/CMS/SA/GAL films was caused by hydrogen bond formation among HP, CMS and GAL components. The antimicrobial crosslinked films considerably enhanced their mechanical properties and swelling degree. After adding SA and GAL, the films retained their porosity structure as observed by scanning electron images. Moreover, GAL-loaded HP/CMS/SA films could inhibit Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli growth, showing their wound dressing potential. Crystallinity percentage, water vapor transmission rate, gel fraction, water solubility, water uptake and cytotoxicity were also investigated.

A sensitive and selective colorimetric sensor for reduced glutathione detection based on silver triangular nanoplates conjugated with gallic acid
Silver triangular nanoplates conjugated with gallic acid (AgTNPs⋅GA) was designed and synthesized for colorimetric detection of reduced glutathione (GSH). The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) properties of AgTNPs⋅GA were strongly influenced by the addition of GSH. The detection principle was based on the aggregation of AgTNPs⋅GA, which leads to the significant bathochromic shift of the SPR spectra from 602 nm to 650 nm. The dramatic color changes from the initial dark blue to light blue can be observed, which allowed simple monitoring of GSH ether by naked eye and UV–vis spectrophotometer. With UV–vis spectrophotometer measurements, a quantitative linearity was established in the range of 0.5–5.0 nM (R2 = 0.9919) and with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.12 ± 0.02 nM. Relative standard deviation (RSD) of 3.46% and 1.82% (n = 10) were achieved for the determination of 1.0 and 3.0 nM, respectively. No interfering substances such as ascorbic acid, glucose, sucrose, citric acid, cysteine, Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe3+ and K+ were revealed in the AgTNPs⋅GA based assay. The proposed colorimetric strategy could be extended as the general platform for detection of GSH in dietary supplements and no significant differences in accuracy and precision were observed compared to HPLC standard method.

A simple and rapid method for measurement of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) was developed. In this work, gallic acid was used as the antioxidant standard. Poly(vinyl alcohol) embedded silver nanoparticles (PVA-AgNPs) were employed as a colorimetric sensor. The detection principle was based on the seed-mediated nanoparticle growth technique. The PVA-AgNPs act as a catalyst in the reduction of Ag+ by gallic acid by providing nucleation seeds. Ag+ was reduced to Ag° and accumulated on the PVA-AgNP surface, leading to an increase in the size of particles. The absorbance of the colloidal solution was drastically enhanced with a small red shift. Under optimal conditions, a linear response was established between the change in absorbance and the TAC value expressed in terms of gallic acid equivalents. The linear range was from 25 to 200 μM with a detection limit of 22.1 μM. Satisfactory precision was obtained with % relative standard deviation (RSD) of 2.17. The developed sensor was successfully applied for TAC assessment of commercial ginger products. The PVA-AgNP sensor offers rapid analysis (within 5 min) compared to other nanoparticle-based antioxidant assays. Synthesis of the particles and assay involved less-toxic chemicals, and is therefore a “greener” method.

A novel efficient ZrO<inf>2</inf>/Co<inf>3</inf>O<inf>4</inf>/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanocomposite catalyst was prepared by a reflux method. Then, the nanocomposite was positively characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Afterward, the nanocomposite was fabricated into an electrochemical sensor by casting it onto the surface of a fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) electrode. The ZrO<inf>2</inf>/Co<inf>3</inf>O<inf>4</inf>/rGO nanocomposite/FTO exhibited a synergistic catalytic effect toward oxidation of gallic acid (GA), caffeic acid (CA) and protocatechuic acid (PA) with the oxidation peak currents increasing linearly with concentrations in the range of 6.24-477.68 nmol L-1, 2.48-524.90 nmol L-1 and 5.40-424.96 nmol L-1 and the limits of detection (S/N = 3) of 1.56 nmol L-1 for GA, 0.62 nmol L-1 for CA and 1.35 nmol L-1 for PA. The proposed electrode was then successfully used for simultaneous determination of the three species in fruit juice, rice and tea samples with satisfactory recoveries, showing the feasibility of its use for electrochemical sensing application.
