    Dielectric materials, such as barium titanate (BT)-based materials, have excellent dielectric properties but require high temperatures (above 1300 °C) for ceramic fabrication, leading to high costs and energy loss. The cold sintering process (CSP) offers a solution to these issues and is gaining worldwide attention as an innovative fabrication route. In this work, we proposed an alternative organic ferroelectric phase, gamma-glycine (γ-GC), which acts as a transient liquid phase to fabricate high-density composites with barium titanate (BT) at low temperatures through CSP. Our findings show that the density of 15γ-GC/85BT reached 96.7%±1.6% when it was sintered at 120 °C for 6 h under 10 MPa uniaxial pressure. Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) mappings of the composite suggested that γ-GC completely underwent the precipitation–dissolution process and, therefore, filled between BT particles. Moreover, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the preservation of γ-GC without undesired phase transformation. In addition, the ferroelectric and dielectric properties of γ-GC/BT composites have been reported. The high dielectric constant (ε<inf>r</inf>) was 3600, and the low dielectric loss (tanδ) was 1.20 at 200 °C and 100 kHz for the 15γ-GC/85BT composite. The hysteresis loop showed a remanent polarization (P<inf>r</inf>) of 0.55 µC·cm-2 and a coercive field (E<inf>c</inf>) of 7.25 kV·cm-1. Our findings reaffirmed that an organic ferroelectric material (γ-GC) can act as a transient liquid phase in a CSP that can successfully and sustainably fabricate γ-GC/BT composites at low temperatures while delivering outstandingly high performance.

    This work demonstrates the first application of the superhydrophobic eggshell as an environmental-friendly material for fabricating the hydrophobic barrier of a paper-based analytical device (PAD). The eggshell surface was modified by mixing the pulverized chicken eggshell biowaste with stearic acid and a polystyrene binder to accomplish superhydrophobicity. The PAD (10 × 10 mm2) is comprised of the circular-shaped hydrophilic reservoir (Ø 5 mm). The liquid barrier was fabricated by painting both the topside and the underside of the filter paper with the dispersed superhydrophobic eggshell solution. The SEM images revealed that the microsized superhydrophobic eggshell particles absorbed onto the porous surface of the cellulose fibril. A coated surface with a water contact angle of 155.39° ± 1.02° (n = 10) on the paper substrate was achieved, and this indicated superhydrophobicity. The eggshell barrier enabled excellent water and chemical resistance. The fabricated PAD was applied for the colorimetric determination of ammonium cations (NH<inf>4</inf>+), based on the modified Berthelot reaction. Samples and chromogenic solutions were aliquoted onto the hydrophilic reservoir, with subsequent capture of the optical image of the stable, green-colored product by a smart phone under a light-controlled studio. The green color intensities were evaluated by ImageJ™ and plotted against the standard NH<inf>4</inf>+ concentrations. A wide linear calibration range 5.0 to 100 mg N/L was achieved with good linearity (r2 > 0.99). The PAD confirmed satisfied analytical recovery (Mean ± SD: 100.6 % ± 0.97, n = 11 samples) and high precision (RSD = 0.85 %: 10-PAD replicate measurements of 1.0 mg N/L). The limit of detection (3 SD of blank/slope) of 1.05 mg N/L was found sensitive enough to monitor the NH<inf>4</inf>+ contents in freshwater. The results, determined by the developed PAD and ion chromatography, showed no significant difference under the statistical paired t-test at 95 % confidence (t<inf>stat</inf> = -1.80, t<inf>cri</inf> = 2.57, n = 6 samples).

    A CeO<inf>2</inf> nanopowder has been synthesized using sonication-assisted precipitation. The use of ultrasonics during precipitation showed potential morphology control during synthesis. The sonication-assisted precipitation with highly aqueous base (20 M NaOH) successfully induced the formation of a one-dimensional nanostructure of CeO<inf>2</inf> rods with a homogeneous shape and size (TEM: 24 nm diameter and 129 nm long). A conventional precipitation under the same conditions provided the CeO<inf>2</inf> in nonuniform sizes and shapes. Heat treatment (1100C for 4 h) was required for CeO<inf>2</inf> formation when (NH<inf>4</inf>)<inf>2</inf>C<inf>2</inf>O<inf>4</inf> was used instead of NaOH. The concentration of the precipitation agent (15-20 M) strongly affected the size and shape of the product. Importantly, according to the temperature-programmed reduction/oxidation study, the CeO<inf>2</inf> prepared using the sonication-assisted route showed a relatively higher level of reversible oxygen storage capacity (2384 μmol/g), compared with the CeO <inf>2</inf> prepared by conventional route (1748 μmol/g). © 2014 The American Ceramic Society.

    The effect of sintering additives (NiO, Co<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf>, and ZnO) on the performance of barium-cerate-based solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) is investigated. The performance of the SOEC with different sintering additives is determined in terms of relative density, electrochemical performance, and catalytic activity toward reverse water gas shift reaction. BaCeO<inf>3</inf> (BC) and BaCe<inf>0.9</inf>Gd<inf>0.1</inf>O<inf>3−δ</inf> (BCG) are synthesized using conventional precipitation method, comparing to ultrasonic-assisted precipitation. The sintering additives promote both densification and grain growth. The relative density of the BCG without sintering additive is 69% while that of the BCG with 1 wt% of Co<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf>, NiO and ZnO is 95%, 95% and 88%, respectively. The SEM images indicate that the BCG with sintering additives exhibits dense grains with relatively large grain size. Although the BGC with NiO and Co<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf> exhibit maximum relative density, the sample with ZnO shows relatively highest conductivity with the lowest activation energy of conduction and the sample with NiO provides the largest CO yield and CO<inf>2</inf> conversion. The activation energy of conduction is found to be 375.41, 70.06, 66.86 and 61.80 kJ mol−1 for BCG, BCG with 1 wt% Co<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf>, NiO and ZnO, respectively. The BCG with 1 wt% NiO provides the highest CO<inf>2</inf> conversion and CO yield at temperature below 700 °C (62% CO<inf>2</inf> conversion and 32% CO yield at 700 °C). Temperature program of oxidation (TPO) reveals that carbon deposition can cause the low CO yield at the operating temperature above 700 °C.

    High NIR-reflective red pigments were developed by encapsulating Fe<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf> particles in a transparent SiO<inf>2</inf> shell layer to form Fe<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf>@SiO<inf>2</inf> core-shell structures. The pigments were prepared by a sol-gel process and the effect of CTAB surfactant concentration on structural formation and optical properties was investigated. The reaction between CTAB and silica species was found to increase the yield of SiO<inf>2</inf> formation, which had a major role to control the SiO<inf>2</inf> shell thickness by ranging from 8 to 62 nm when varying CTAB concentration from 0 to 2 mM. After encapsulation, Fe<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf>@SiO<inf>2</inf> pigments still had the red-brown hue of hematite and the NIR reflectivity improved to 62.7 %–65.3%, or twice that of the uncoated Fe<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf>. The pigments prepared using the highest CTAB concertation changed from the original Fe<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf> color (CIE Lab color space coordinates) by only ΔE 8.2% due to the formation of second phase SiO<inf>2</inf> microspheres formed from excess CTAB micelles. The NIR-reflective red Fe<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf>@SiO<inf>2</inf> pigments showed good chemical stability and light resistance, thus they were suitable for use as cool pigments for coating applications.

    This study reported the preparation of nanocrystalline CoFe2O4 in single step by the sonochemical method in highly basic aqueous solution without requiring of high temperature calcination process. To prepare nanocrystalline CoFe2O4, the mixed solution of the required molar ratio of cobalt nitrate hexahydrate (Co(NO<inf>3</inf>).6H2O) and ferric nitrate nonahydrate (Fe(NO<inf>3</inf>).9H2O) was precipitated in high concentration of sodium hydroxide medium solution (NaOH) under high intensity ultrasonic irradiation (20 kHz, 150 W/cm2). The effect of NaOH concentration (5, 10, 15 and 20 M) on phase formation, microstructure and magnetic property of CoFe2O4 was investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results showed that the as-prepared powders were single phase CoFe2O4 with cubic spinel structure. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study showed that nanocrystalline CoFe2O4 had monosized distorted spherical morphology and an agglomeration of the nanocrystalline CoFe2O4 into nanoparticles was observed when increasing the NaOH concentration. The nanocrystalline CoFe2O4 exhibited superparamagnetic property and the saturation magnetization (Ms) obtained from vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) was found to correlate with the crystallite size and varied from 39-45 emu/g.

    Colorimetric detection of glutathione based on phthalic acid assisted synthesis of silver nanoparticles
    A new rapid, sensitive and selective colorimetric sensing platform for the detection of glutathione (GSH) in dietary supplements was developed by phthalic acid (PTA) assisted synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The di-carboxylic functional groups of PTA were used to modify the surface of AgNPs. The resulting AgNPs product was characterized by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–vis), Zeta potential analyzer, Fourietransform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) techniques, demonstrated that PTA is an effective capping agent to stabilize AgNPs. AgNPs stabilized with PTA could cause the strong affinity to GSH. As the GSH concentration increased, the color of AgNPs solutions was gradually changed from yellow to orange and light purple as well as the SPR shifted from 400 nm to 556 nm upon an aggregation of AgNPs due to electrostatic interaction. The proposed colorimetric sensor was exhibited a linear response in the range of 0.1–100 nM (R2 = 0.9992), with low detection limit (LOD) of 0.16 ± 0.01 nM. The sensor showed better precision with relative standard deviation (RSD) of 2.10% and 1.13% for ten repetitive measurements of 25 nM and 75 nM GSH solution, respectively. The sensitivity of AgNPs for GSH detection can be clearly differentiated towards other coexisting substances (Fe3+, Zn2+, Cu2+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, glucose, sucrose, cysteine, ascorbic acid and citric acid). The AgNPs colorimetric sensor could discriminatively detect GSH in dietary supplement samples with the recoveries values in the range of 98.5%–103.0%.

    Photoreduction of CO<inf>2</inf> to a high-value product is an interesting approach that not only captures CO<inf>2</inf> but also converts it into other products that can be sold or used in industry. The mechanism for the CO<inf>2</inf> conversion relies strongly on photo-generated electrons that further couple with CO<inf>2</inf> and form active radicals for the reaction. In this research, we synthesized a heterostructure of copper-doped sodium dititanate nanosheets and graphene oxide (CTGN) following a one-step hydrothermal process with assistance from a sodium hydroxide soft template. The role of the template here is to facilitate the formation of the nanosheets, creating the nanosheet-graphene 2D-2D heterostructure. The heterostructure yields excellent charge mobility and a low charge recombination rate, while the nanosheet-graphene interfaces house active radicals and stabilize intermediates. The CTGN exhibits an outstanding photoactivity in the photoreduction of CO<inf>2</inf>, producing liquid fuels, including acetone, methanol, ethanol and i-propanol.

    CeO2/CuO/TiO2heterojunction photocatalysts for conversion of CO2to ethanol
    (2021-09-10) ; ;
    Morris, John
    ;
    Kim-Lohsoontorn, Pattaraporn
    An attempt to reduce CO2 emissions has led to the development of CeO2/CuO/TiO2 heterojunction photocatalysts for photoconversion of CO2 to useful products, e.g. ethanol. Composite photocatalysts were simply prepared by mixing TiO2 (P25) with different mass ratios of CeO2 (1 wt%) and CuO (2 or 3 wt%) by ball milling. The prepared photocatalysts had uniformly distributed CeO2 and CuO phases, throughout the TiO2 phase. The integration of CeO2 and CuO into TiO2 at 1 wt% CeO2 and 3 wt% CuO produced a composite, with a reduced band gap of 2.88 eV, allowing absorption of lower energy light and a lower electron-hole recombination rate. The 1%CeO2/3%CuO/TiO2 photocatalysts yielded ethanol at 30.5 μmol gcat-1 h-1, almost three times higher than the yield from pure TiO2. This improved CO2 conversion efficiency was due to contributions from properties of both additives: CeO2 increased light absorption, while CuO acted as an electron trap and enhanced CO2 adsorption. In addition, the heterojunction at the interfaces facilitated the photogenerated charge separation, which, in turn, increased the charge participation in the catalyzed conversion reactions.

    Effect of Adsorption Characteristics of Rhodamine 6G Dye Solution in Fe3O4 Magnetic Nanoparticles on Fluorescence Quantum Yield
    (2019-01-01)

    ; ;
    In this work, the use of Fe<inf>3</inf>O<inf>4</inf> magnetic nanoparticles in the adsorption of rhodamine 6G solution was evaluated via absorbance and fluorescence spectroscopy using the UV-Vis spectrometer. The adsorption mechanism of rhodamine 6G on Fe<inf>3</inf>O<inf>4</inf> was determined with respect to the adsorbent dosage (2.5-10 mg/L) and treatment time (0-150 min). The experimental data revealed that the fluorescence quantum yield of rhodamine 6G was inversely proportional to the percentage of dye removal. The highest efficiency of dye removal was obtained at 10 mg/L Fe<inf>3</inf>O<inf>4</inf>, and the adsorption capacity was about 150 mg/g, together with a reduced treatment time of 30 min, owing to active adsorption of Fe<inf>3</inf>O<inf>4</inf>. We believe that our study makes a significant contribution to the literature because Fe<inf>3</inf>O<inf>4</inf> magnetic nanoparticles were found to be able to quench rhodamine 6G dye molecules, which will aid in eliminating toxic and hazardous pollutants from dye wastewater, which are otherwise detrimental to the environment and human health.
