This paper proposes the dual-band S-patch antenna with gain enhancement by using the planar array configuration and dielectric superstrate. The design of the proposed antenna is focused on the base station antenna in the 5G frequency bands n41 (2.6 GHz) and n78 (3.5 GHz). The dual-band S-patch antenna is arranged in the 2 × 6 elements planar array antenna and the FR4 dielectric superstrate is on the top of the array. The simulated results indicated that the operating frequency of 2.55–2.65 GHz and 3.46–3.61 GHz with uni-directional radiation pattern. The antenna gain can be improved with 18.70 dBi at 2.6 GHz and 19.30 dBi at 3.5 GHz. The prototype antenna is fabricated and the measured results are in good agreement. With the simple design of the proposed antenna, it would be useful for the installation of the base station antenna.

This paper proposes a low-profile high-gain dual-band reverse S-patch antenna scheme that supports fifth-generation (5G) frequency bands for mobile base stations. In the antenna design, a reverse S-shaped radiation patch is used to achieve resonant at 2.6 GHz and 3.5 GHz, and an FR4 dielectric superstrate is included to enhance the antenna gain. The results show that the proposed reverse S-patch antenna scheme with dielectric superstate resonates at both target frequencies, covering 2.57-2.62 GHz and 3.46-3.55 GHz with unidirectional radiation pattern. The measured antenna gain are 5.0 dBi at 2.6 GHz and 4.0 dBi at 3.5 GHz. In essence, the proposed antenna scheme can be further developed into an array antenna with enhanced gain for 5G mobile base stations. The novelty of this research lies in the use of FR4 dielectric superstrate to enhance the antenna gain.

This research presents a far-field (FF) antenna with near-field communication (NFC) capability for 3G/4G/LTE mobile devices. The integrated far- and near-field communication (FNFC) antenna was fabricated using conductive silver ink on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) flexible substrate. The FF segment of the antenna is operable in the frequency range of 1.8-2.1 GHz, and the NFC antenna is of dual loop and operable at 13.56 MHz. In the antenna realization, simulations were performed and, to validate, an antenna prototype was fabricated. The experimental results revealed that the FF antenna achieved an impedance bandwidth of 37% (1.52-2.21 GHz), given $\vert S_{11}\vert $ of less than -6 dB, with the minimum and maximum efficiency of 92.1% and 98%. The experimental gains are 1.76-2.08 dBi across the target operating frequency band, with near-omnidirectional radiation pattern. The simulation and experimental results are in good agreement. Moreover, the FNFC antenna achieves strong magnetic field distributions in $H_{\mathrm {x}}$ , $H_{\mathrm {y}}$ , and $H_{\mathrm {z}}$ orientations and holds promising potential for 3G/4G/LTE applications.

    (2016-06-01)

    Phongcharoenpanich, Chuwong
This research is concerned with a multiple loop antenna applicable to near field ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID). The proposed multi-loop antenna is configured to induce the robust and even magnetic field distributions in the H<inf>x</inf>, H<inf>y</inf>, and H<inf>z</inf> orientations so as to achieve the enhanced readability performances in all directions (i.e., x, y, and z). Simulations were carried out using CST Microwave Studio to determine the impedance bandwidth (|S<inf>11</inf>|<−10 dB) in the frequency range of 920–925 MHz (i.e., Thailand's UHF RFID standard) and to investigate the H<inf>x</inf>-, H<inf>y</inf>-, and H<inf>z</inf>-oriented magnetic field distributions. A prototype antenna of 14 cm × 16 cm × 0.6 mm (W × L × H) in overall dimension was subsequently fabricated on an FR4 substrate connected to a coaxial cable. In this research, the H<inf>x</inf>-, H<inf>y</inf>-, and H<inf>z</inf>-oriented magnetic field distributions of the prototype antenna were measured in the x-axis, y-axis, and x–y plane and are in good agreement with the simulation results. The measured readability performances in the x-, y-, and z-directions in which seven near field UHF RFID tags were deployed unobstructed (i.e., in open air) are respectively 25.27%, 31.73%, and 85.43%. Furthermore, the performances on the antenna readability with the tags attached to the microcentrifuge tubes are 30.55%, 25.90%, and 69.09% for the x-, y-, and z-directions. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper presents the spiral loop antenna for low frequency radio frequency identification (LF-RFID) in conveyor belt applications. The structure of spiral loop antenna can provide the magnetic field distribution of each principal component (Hx-, Hy-and Hz-component) to enhance the communication distance in all principal directions. The overall size of antenna is 55 cm × 60 cm. The antenna was fabricated with 24 AWG copper wire and fed by BNC-connector. The numerical electromagnetics code (NEC) is employed to analyze the magnetic field distribution and communication performance in each principal component. The antenna prototype was fabricated to confirm the communication performance between reader and tag. From the measured results, the spiral loop antenna has the percentage of surface equal to 76.34%, 98.96% and 67.56% in x-, y-, and z-directions, respectively. For the measured results with the conveyor belt applications, it is found that the percentage of surface is 42.50% in x-direction, 100% in y-direction, and 95% in z-direction, respectively.

In this paper, the design of a dual band quadrifilar helical antenna (QHA) is proposed for the radio beacon receiver in the application of the ground station of the low earth orbit (LEO) satellite. The new configuration of the QHA is proposed to achieve the dual operating frequencies (150 MHz and 400 MHz), which it is the combination of two bifilar helical antennas (BHA). The proposed antenna possess the hemispherical radiation pattern, dual-band operation, circular polarization and 2.2 dBic absolute gain. The simulation results are shown to demonstrate the antenna performance. © 2011 IEEE.
