A novel culturable insect-derived actinobacterium, designated strain Odt1-20BT, was isolated from Odontotermes formosanus. The cells exhibited aerobic, Gram-stain-positive, and filamentous characteristics. Strain Odt1-20BT formed well-developed substrate and aerial mycelia, with straight spore chains borne on the aerial mycelium. Strain Odt1-20BT grew at 20–40 °C (optimum 30 °C), 0˗4% (w/v) NaCl, and pH 5˗10 (optimum 7−8). The l,l-diaminopimelic acid was determined in the whole-cell hydrolysate of strain Odt1-20BT. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, and phosphatidylethanolamine, whereas the detected major quinones were MK-9(H<inf>4</inf>), MK-9(H<inf>6</inf>), and MK-9(H<inf>8</inf>). Whole-cell sugars were galactose, glucose, mannose, ribose, and xylose. Summed feature C<inf>18:1</inf> ω6c/ω7c, C<inf>16:0</inf>, anteiso-C<inf>15:0</inf>, and iso-C<inf>16:0</inf> were the main fatty acids. The draft genome size was 10,091,787 nucleotides, with a G + C content of 71.5%. Comparative phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence demonstrated that strain Odt1-20BT belonged to the genus Streptomyces, and shared the highest similarity with S. davaonensis JCM 4913 T (98.55%). Furthermore, phylogenomic analysis showed that strain Odt1-20BT was clearly distinguished from the closely related Streptomyces species. The average nucleotide identity analyses based on BLAST (ANIb) and MUMmer (ANIm) between strain Odt1-20BT and its related species ranged below 87%, and the digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values ranged from 21.2% to 29.9%, all of which are below the species delimitation thresholds. The results of polyphasic taxonomy clearly indicated that strain Odt1-20BT represents a novel species, proposed as Streptomyces odontotermitis sp. nov. with the type strain Odt1-20BT (= NBRC 116112 T = TBRC 16156 T).

Twelve hitherto undescribed cis-decalinoyltetramic acid derivatives (arengasetins A – L), a unique spiro[2.4]heptendione (spiroarengarone) and two benzoquinones (arengaquinones A and B), together with the highly oxygenated polycyclic molecule, epicolactone, were isolated from the palm fungus Leptosporella arengae TBRC-BCC 32590. Chemical structures were determined by extensive analyses of 2D NMR spectroscopic data and chemical means. The absolute configuration of arengasetin A (1) was confirmed by X-ray crystallographic information, while the absolute configurations of other related compounds were corroborated by comparison of NMR spectroscopic data and chemical reactions. The isolated compounds exhibited activity against Plasmodium falciparum (K1, multidrug-resistant strain, IC<inf>50</inf> 6.42 – > 38.76 μM), Bacillus cereus (MIC 0.78 – > 50.0 μg/mL), Staphylococcus aureus (MIC 1.56 – > 50.0 μg/mL), and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MIC 6.25 – > 50.0 μg/mL). Cytotoxicity against both cancerous (MCF-7 and NCI-H187) and noncancerous (Vero) was also reported.

Strain Odt1-22T, an insect-derived actinomycete was isolated from a termite (Odontotermes formosanus) that was collected from Chanthaburi province, Thailand. Strain Odt1-22T was aerobic, Gram-stain-positive, and produced bud-like spore chain on the substrate hypha. According to chemotaxonomic analysis, strain Odt1-22T contained meso-diaminopimelic acid in peptidoglycan and the whole-cell hydrolysates contained arabinose, galactose, glucose, and ribose. The major menaquinone was MK-8(H<inf>4</inf>). The diagnostic phospholipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, hydroxyphosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16 S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain Odt1-22T was identified to the genus Actinomycetospora and showed high similarity values with A. chiangmaiensis DSM 45062 T (99.24%), A. soli SF1T (99.24%) and A. corticicola 014-5 T (98.17%). The genomic size of strain Odt1-22T was 6.6 Mbp with 73.8% G + C content and 6355 coding sequences (CDSs). The genomic analysis, strain Odt1-22T and closely related species A. chiangmaiensis DSM 45062 T, A. soli SF1T and A. corticicola DSM 45772 T displayed the values of average nucleotide identity-blast (ANIb) at 83.7–84.1% and MUMmer (ANIm) at 86.6–87.0%. Moreover, the results of digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain Odt1-22T and related Actinomycetospora species were 45.8−50.5% that lower than the threshold value of commonly used to delineate separated species level. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, and genotypic data, strain Odt1-22T represented a novel species within the genus Actinomycetospora, for which the name Actinomycetospora termitidis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the species is Odt1-22T (= TBRC 16192 T = NBRC 115965 T).

Twelve 4-hydroxyquinoline derivatives (1–12) and three phenazine alkaloids (13–15) have been isolated from Pseudomonas aeruginosa BCC76810. All these compounds, except compounds 6, 7, 9, and 11, are known. The new quinolines are 2-((Z)-undec-4′-enyl)-4-hydroxyquinoline (6), 2-(3′-(2′-hexylcyclopropyl)propyl)-4-hydroxyquinoline (7), 2-n-octyl-4-hydroxyquinoline N-oxide (9), and 2-((Z)-undec-4′-enyl)-4-hydroxyquinoline N-oxide (11). Their structures were elucidated based on the spectroscopic information, such as 1D, 2D NMR, UV, and HRESIMS data. 4-Hydroxyquinolines (1–6) and 4-hydroxyquinoline-N-oxides (8–11) exhibited antimalarial activity against Plasmodium falciparum, K1 strain (IC<inf>50</inf> 0.25–2.07 μg/mL) with moderate to weak cytotoxicity against cancerous (KB, MCF-7, NCI-H187) and non-cancerous (Vero) cells. In addition, 4-hydroxyquinoline N-oxides also displayed anti-Bacillus cereus and antioxidant activities.

An endophytic actinomycete strain BCC72023 was isolated from rice (Oryza sativa L.) and identified as the genus Streptomyces, based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses. The strain showed 99.80% similarity compared with Streptomyces samsunensis M1463T. Chemical investigation led to the isolation of three macrolides, efomycins M (1), G (2) and oxohygrolidin (3), along with two polyethers, abierixin (4) and 29-O-methylabierixin (5). To our knowledge, this is the first report of efomycin M being isolated from a natural source. The compounds were identified using spectroscopic techniques and comparison with previously published data. All compounds exhibited antimalarial activity against the Plasmodium falciparum, K-1 strain, a multidrug-resistant strain, with IC<inf>50</inf> values in a range of 1.40-5.23 μg/ml. In addition, these compounds were evaluated for biological activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Bacillus cereus, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Colletotrichum capsici, as well as cytotoxicity against both cancerous (MCF-7, KB, NCI-H187) and non-cancerous (Vero) cells.

An actinomycete strain, designated strain SH2-13T, was isolated from a marine sediment sample collected from the Andaman Sea of Thailand. Applying a polyphasic approach, the isolate was identified as a member of the genus Micromonospora using morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics, including the presence of meso-diaminopimelic acid in the peptidoglycan. Whole-cell sugars were arabinose, galactose, glucose, rhamnose, ribose and xylose. Diagnostic polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannosides and phosphoglycolipids. The major menaquinones were MK-10(H<inf>2</inf>), MK-10(H<inf>4</inf>) and MK-10(H<inf>6</inf>). 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed similarity to Micromonospora marina JSM1-1T (99.1%), Micromonospora coxensis 2-30-b(28)T (99.1%), Micromonospora aurantiaca DSM 43813T (98.8%) and Micromonospora chalcea DSM 43026T (98.7%). However, a combination of DNA-DNA hybridization results and phenotypic properties indicated that strain SH2-13T (=NBRC 107934T=BCC 45601T) should be classified as the type strain of a novel species, with the proposed name Micromonospora sediminicola sp. nov. © 2013 IUMS.
