The effectiveness of star anise (Illicium verum) nanoemulsion and deltamethrin (chemical insecticide) was tested with beet armyworm (Spodoptera exigua) to evaluate their mortality, antifeedant, and growth inhibition effects at proper concentrations. As a result, at the obtained highest effectiveness, star anise nanoemulsion required 0.35% concentration for the maximum effectiveness with 100% mortality, antifeedant and growth inhibition effects against beet armyworm, when compared with the control (Tween20 and water), while deltamethrin exhibited a lower rate. Therefore, star anise nanoemulsion seem to be utilized as a highly effective and environmentally friendly insecticide to control beet armyworm.

The findings revealed that the nEO formula of I. verum and C. longa demonstrated optimal effectiveness, with a concentration of 0.35% resulting in the highest mortality rate of 43.3%, 100% antifeedant effect and 85.0% growth inhibition activities in pupae. Additionally, a concentration of 0.25% led to 100% growth inhibition activities in adults. Consequently, the nEO formulas of I. verum and C. longa promise for the future development of botanical insecticides targeting the control of S. exigua.

The results showed that Curcuma longa and Illicium verum nEOs performed extremely high mortality and antifeedant activity, as well as affected on growth development of Spodoptera exigua. Essential oil nanoemulsions at 0.35 % concentrations caused 100% mortality, 100% antifeedant activity, and 100% growth inhibition. Curcuma longa and Illicium verum nEOs revealed to be used as botanical insecticide for controlling Spodoptera exigua.

The cutworm, Spodoptera litura is an important pest of cruciferous vegetables and it causes economic impact worldwide. The efficiency of turmeric and star anise essential oil nanoemulsions (nEOs) against the cutworm, including mortality, antifeedant, and growth inhibition effects was investigated. Essential oil nanoemulsions (nEOs) were prepared by mixing the essential oils with surfactants and co-surfactants. The 2nd, stage instar larvae of cutworms were tested by leaf dipping method and were observed after 24 hours. The results showed that the two nEOs, which were turmeric and star anise, performing the mortality, and growth development effect on Spodoptera litura as well as having antifeedant property. Complete mortality rate was shown at 0.35 % concentration of turmeric and star anise nEOs, when 100% antifeedant effect was found at 0.20% concentrations of nEOs, and 100% growth inhibition was observed at 0.30% concentrations of nEOs. It could be concluded that the nEOs from star anise had antifeedant and insecticide properties.
