    Thermal performance of turbulent flow in a solar air heater channel with rib-groove turbulators
    (2014-01-01)

    The paper presents an experimental study on turbulent flow and heat transfer characteristics in a solar air heater channel fitted with combined wavy-rib and groove turbulators. The experiments are performed by controlling the airflow rate to obtain Reynolds numbers in the range of 4000 to 21,000. To produce recirculation flow in the tested channel having a constant heat-flux on the upperwall only, the triangular wavy ribs are placed repeatedly on the tested grooved channelwalls. Three test cases of different rib-pitch to channel-height ratios (PR = P/ H = 0.5, 1 and 2) with a single rib-to-channel height ratio (BR = b/H = 0.25) are introduced in the present work. The wavy ribs are placed with the attack angle of 45° relative to main flow direction. There are three types of rib arrangements, namely, rib-groove on the upper wall only, inline rib-groove, and staggered ribinline groove on two principal walls. The experimental result reveals that the combined rib-groove on both the upper and lowerwalls of the test channel provides the highest heat transfer rate and friction factor in comparison with the smooth channel with/without ribs. However, the ribbed-grooved upper wall at PR = 0.5 yields the highest thermal performance. The combined rib-groove turbulator is found to be considerably higher thermal performance than the groove alone. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

    Assessment among various groove-gasket designs under solid oxide fuel cell operating condition is presented. The gasket is deformable under the stress applied by external loading between 0.13-0.67 MPa. The operating temperature is from 30 to 800 °C. It has an indicated width of 1.95 mm and depth of 2.1 mm., which is accommodated in a square, triangular and U groove channel having the dimension of 2.0 × 2.0 mm 2. From the results, the U shape configuration provides the best performance with immeasurable leak rate under the applying load represented in term of global stress of 0.67 MPa. A stress analysis using Finite Element Method (FEM) tool, ABAQUS™, suggests sufficiently high compressive stress far exceeding the elastic limit with enough coverage of such high-stress area for U-shape design. In contrast, those from square and triangular designs posses relatively lower well-distributed stress and smaller region of highly concentrated stress, respectively. The associated deformed cross section suggests that the gasket has plastically deformed toward the U-shape wall surface at a greater degree than those for triangular-shape design. It can be concluded that the greater region in deformed gasket surface can more effectively reduce interconnectivity of micro channel on the interface between the gasket and the interconnector surfaces. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. This paper presents a microstrip hairpin bandpass filter (BPF) with simultaneously compact size and harmonic suppression. With the use of a square groove technique, the phase velocities between even- and odd-mode in parallel-coupled line segment are compensated. Two prototype filters based on the conventional hairpin and the proposed hairpin BPF are designed at the center frequency of 2.45 GHz with a fractional bandwidth of 20 percentages and fabricated on the microstrip structure. The proposed BPF exhibits the measured insertion loss of 1.2 dB at the centered frequency of 2.49 GHz, whereas the in-band return loss is kept below 12 dB from 2.21 to 2.7 GHz. Good agreements between the simulation and measurement can be obtained. © 2010 IEEE.

    This paper presents the effects of the rib-groove turbulators on the heat transfer and friction characteristics in a rectangular channel. The experiments encompass the Reynolds number range from 1800 to 10,000; pitch ratios (PR=P/e) 6.6-13.3 by using air as the working fluid. The obtained results demonstrate that heat transfer rate in term of Nusselt number (Nu) increases with the increase of Reynolds number, whereas friction factor (f) shows the opposite trend. Both Nusselt number and friction factor increase with decreasing pitch ratio. It is also observed that heat transfer rate and friction factor for the channels with rib-groove turbulators are higher than those for the smooth channel under similar test conditions. In addition, the correlations for heat transfer rate in term of Nusselt number (Nu) and friction factor (f) for channel with rib-groove turbulators are also presented. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

    Thermal characteristics of turbulent rib-grooved channel flows

    ;
    Experimental work has been performed to examine the combined effects of rib-grooved turbulators on the turbulent forced convection heat transfer and friction characteristics in a rectangular duct under a uniform heat flux boundary condition. In the experiments, three types of rib-groove arrangements: rectangular-rib and triangular-groove (RR-TG), triangular-rib and rectangular-groove (TR-RG) and triangular-rib with triangular-groove (TR-TG), were examined. Measurements were carried out for the duct of one aspect ratio, AR = W/H = 20 and duct height, H = 9 mm with rib height, e = 3 mm at three pitch ratios, PR = P/e = 6.6, 10 and 13.3. Experiments were conducted for the Reynolds number range of 3000 to 10,000. Influences of rib-groove arrangements on the Nusselt number and friction factor have been discussed and compared with smooth duct results under similar test conditions. Isothermal friction factors were also taken and presented. The obtained results of the smooth duct are in good agreement with the previous studies found in the literature. Experimental results also show that the duct with RR-TG arrangement provides maximum heat transfer rate and friction factor than others. On the other hand, the thermal enhancement index obtained at constant pumping power reveals that the TR-TG provides the highest values for all pitch ratios studied. Finally, correlations for the heat transfer (Nu), friction factor (f) and the enhancement index (η) have been developed as a function of pitch ratio (PR) and Reynolds number (Re). © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Numerical study on heat transfer of turbulent channel flow over periodic grooves
    (2008-08-01)
    Eiamsa-ard, Smith
    ;
    A numerical investigation of turbulent forced convection in a two-dimensional channel with periodic transverse grooves on the lower channel wall is conducted. The lower wall is subjected to a uniform heat flux condition while the upper wall is insulated. To investigate turbulence model effects, computations based on a finite volume method, are carried out by utilizing four turbulence models: the standard k - ε, the Renormalized Group (RNG) k - ε, the standard k - ω, and the shear stress transport (SST) k - ω turbulence models. Parametric runs are made for Reynolds numbers ranging from 6000 to 18,000 with the groove-width to channel-height ratio (B/H) of 0.5 to 1.75 while the groove pitch ratio of 2 and the depth ratio of 0.5 are fixed throughout. The predicted results from using several turbulence models reveal that the RNG and the k - ε turbulence models generally provide better agreement with available measurements than others. Therefore, the k - ε model is selected to use in prediction of this complex flow. In addition, the results of the heat transfer coefficient, friction factor, skin friction coefficient and thermal enhancement factor are also examined. It is found that the grooved channel provides a considerable increase in heat transfer at about 158% over the smooth channel and a maximum gain of 1.33 on thermal performance factor is obtained for the case of B/H = 0.75. This indicates that the reverse/re-circulation flow in a channel with transverse grooves can improve the heat transfer rate. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
