A microwave kiln, made of silicon carbide and ceramic fiber, commonly employs in a household glassware production process. In this process, when the kiln was in a microwave oven, a microwave transmitted to the kiln generating a high temperature to fuse the glass inside. This article presents a thermal simulation to investigate the temperature inside the kiln based on multiphysics consisting of a high-frequency structure simulator (HFSS) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The multiphysics results revealed the temperature inside the kiln in a transient state, consistent with the experimental results. As expected, the temperature increased with the increasing time of the process. Significantly, the silicon carbide had higher temperatures than the ceramic fiber; therefore, silicon carbide is a crucial material for generating heat inside the kiln. In addition, the temperature-increasing rate (TIR) inside the kiln depended on the kiln's thickness (Th). As a result, the thinner Th provided better TIR. The research findings can be applied to develop a high-efficacy household glassware production process.

Development of an industrial ultrasonic cleaning tank based on harmonic response analysis

A small industrial ultrasonic cleaning tank, which is one of the best-selling models, had cleaning problems. Customers sometimes complained that the tank did not completely clean all objects, or that some objects got damaged, so a solution to the problem was urgently needed. The tank has a volume of 18 L, frequency of 28 kHz, eight horn style PZT4 transducers, and a total electric power of 400 W. The cleaning occurs from the cavitation effect which corresponds to an increase in the acoustic pressure. A computer simulation is presented using a harmonic response analysis (HRA) in ANSYS to resolve and improve the efficacy of the tank. From the simulation, we found that the acoustic pressure within the tank was uneven. The distribution of acoustic pressure had a characteristic pattern depending on the placement of the transducers. When the temperature was increased, the acoustic pressure was decreased leading to a cleaning efficacy drop as well. All simulation results were correlated to the foil corrosion test and power concentration experiment. The HRA was used to redesign the tank for higher cleaning efficacy. The simulation results indicated that more suitable placement of the transducers lead to a more intensified acoustic pressure, and a better distribution throughout the tank. This research not only resolved the cleaning problems that occurred in the 28 kHz tank, but was also demonstrated that it can be applied to a 40 kHz tank as well. Results from this research were accepted and approved by the manufacturer, and were used by them to develop smarter industrial ultrasonic tanks with higher cleaning efficacy for commercial sale.

This article reports a problem in hard disk drive manufacturing (HDD) process and a practical solution. A traditional micro gripper of stainless steel 304, practically used in an HDD factory, has a low life expectancy. Therefore, the fatigue analysis was employed to solve this problem. Firstly, 27 cases of possible designs of micro gripper were proposed according to the full factorial design of six sigma (6σ) analysis. Each case is different regarding the micro grippers shapes which are degree, radius, and length. Secondly, 3D models of the micro gripper for all cases were created and transferred to the finite element analysis to simulate the equivalent stress and the compressive force. After the simulation completed, we found that the optimum design of micro gripper has 457.9 MPa of the equivalent stress and 0.991 N of the compressive force, which was less than those of the traditional design. Finally, the optimum design was brought to analyze in more details by using the fatigue analysis. The comparing results of simulation showed that the maximum equivalent stress and the compressive force of the optimum design compared to the traditional design were reduced 14.5% and 19.4%, respectively. These make approximately extending 136.5% of the life cycle and increasing 17.5% of the safety factor. This improvement was expected that it could be able to extend the lifetime of the micro gripper and save up to 60 million dollars annually.
