Item type:Publication, Efficacy of plant essential oils for repelling against American cockroach adults (Periplaneta americana L.)(2025-01-01) ;Passara, H. ;Soonwera, M. ;Arhamad-Armeen, N. ;Sittichok, S.Jintanasirinurak, S.The combination of four plant essential oils (EOs) from star anise, citronella grass, lemon grass, and cinnamon was evaluated for repelling American cockroaches by the dual-choice method. A combination of star anise + citronella grass had a repellency rate of 95%. In contrast, combinations of star anise + lemon grass and star anise + cinnamon were effective between 73% and 69%, but the synthetic chemical repellent (12% DEET) was less effective at 59%. Therefore, the essential oils formulae had a high potential for effective use and, further, are harmless for healthiness and the environment. Item type:Publication, Antioxidant, Anti-Oral Cancer, and Antimicrobial Activity of Medicinal Plant Extracts: Development of Mouthrinse Formulations(2023-04-01)Nanasombat, SureeNowadays, there is growing interest in using medicinal plants as antimicrobial agents to treat microbial infections in the oral cavity. This study was aimed to evaluate phytochemical properties, anti-oral cancer and antimicrobial activity against C. albicans and some potential oral lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus plantarum). Plant extracts including Cinnamomum verum (cinnamon), Acorus calamus (sweet flag), Hibiscus sabdariffa (roselle), Zingiber officinale (ginger) and Alpinia officinarum (lesser galangal) were tested and used to formulate mouthrinses for oral health care. Cinnamon extract possessed the highest phenolic, flavonoid and tannin content, and antioxidant activity (1,152.58 mg ascorbic acid equivalent/g by phosphomolybdenum assay and 39.64 % nitric oxide radical scavenging activity), while roselle extract had the highest total alkaloids. Only lesser galangal extract displayed anti-oral cancer activity with 97.83 % cytotoxicity. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis revealed the presence of galangin and kaempferide in the lesser galangal rhizome extract. The cinnamon extract showed the strongest inhibitory activity against Candida albicans (4 mg/mL MIC). Cinnamon extract (24 mg/mL) and cinnamaldehyde (0.08 mol/L) exhibited the best killing effect and the highest cellular protein leakage in C. albicans. In addition, these plant extracts were used to develop mouthrinse formulations. The extracts of cinnamon and ginger at 10 % in mouthrinse formulations could strongly inhibit the growth of C. albicans. In comparison, 8 and 10 % roselle extracts showed the best inhibitory effect against Lactobacillus casei. In summary, cinnamon and lesser galangal were potential plants with antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-biofilm and anti-oral cancer activities, and thus can be utilized to formulate oral care products. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Effects of seven plant essential oils on mortalities of chicken lice (Lipeurus caponis l.) adult(2020-01-01) ;Pumnuan, Jarongsak ;Insung, AmmornKlompanya, AmponChicken lice (Lipeurus caponis L.) are external parasite of chicken and farmers often use malathion and carbaryl insecticides to control this parasite. However, the use of chemical insecticides may result in direct toxicity to chicken or contamination in chicken meats. Thus, this study investigated the effect of seven plant essential oils (EOs) against adult chicken lice. Contact bioassay was performed by laying 10 adult chicken lice on treated filter paper added with EOs at concentrations of 0 (95% ethanol as a control), 0.079, 0.157, 0.236 and 0.314 μl·cm<sup>-2</sup>. Mortality percentages were observed at 3, 6 and 12 h intervals after the treatments. Clove, cinnamon, turmeric and star anise EOs were able to eliminate the lice completely (100% mortalities) at 12 h exposure which were higher than lemon grass, citronella grass and piper EOs. Clove EO was the most effective oil with LC<inf>50</inf> of 0.132, 0.085 and 0.039 μl·cm<sup>-2</sup> at 3, 6 and 12 h, respectively. Furthermore, clove EO at the 0.157 μl·cm<sup>-2</sup> showed the highest mortalities with LT<inf>50</inf> at 1.438 h. Our study suggests that clove EO could be used as an alternative medicinal insecticide to control chicken lice in farms. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Fumigant toxicity of plant essential oils in controlling thrips, Frankliniella schultzei (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) and mealybug, Pseudococcus jackbeardsleyi (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae)(2016-01-01) ;Pumnuan, JarongsakInsung, AmmornInsecticidal activity of 18 plant essential oils against adults of thrips (Frankliniella schultzei (Trybom)) and larvae of mealybug (Pseudococcus jackbeardsleyi Gimpel & Miller) were primarily investigated by using fumigation method. Later, various concentrations of the highly effective essential oils (resulting in more than 80% mortality) were tested. Major constituents in the commonly effective essential oils against both insects were analyzed. Then, fumigant toxicities of the standard chemicals and the selected essential oils were studied and compared. The results showed that the essential oils of clove (Syzygium aromaticum Merr. & L.M. Perry), cinnamon (Cinnamomum bejolghota (Buch.-Ham.) Sweet) and lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus (Dc.ex. Nees)) showed commonly high fumigant toxicity against the thrips and mealybug with the LC<inf>50</inf> at 1.14-1.48 and 1.12-1.58 μl/L air, respectively. The major chemicals found were eugenol in clove and cinnamon oils (97.100 and 82.054%, respectively) and citral (trans-citral and cis-citral) in lemongrass (69.730%). In general, the essential oil presented higher fumigant toxicity than the standard chemical. Item type:Publication, Effectiveness of essential oils of medicinal plants against stored product mite, suidasia pontifica oudemans(2012-04-01) ;Pumnuan, J.Insung, A.Acaricidal activity of essential oils obtained from 28 selected medicinal plants against stored product mite, Suidasia pontifica Oudemans, was investigated using the dry film method. The bioassay was conducted in a glass tube, 0.4 cm in diameter, 3 cm long covered with fine nylon mesh on both ends. In preliminary tests, 1.0% (53 μg cm<sup>-2</sup>) of various essential oils and 95% ethanol used as control were evaluated. Each glass tube was treated internally with 20 μl essential oils. Observations were made at 24 h after treatment and the number of dead mites was recorded. At the dose of 1.0%, essential oils of clove (Syzygium aromaticum), cinnamon (Cinnamomum bejolghota), myrtle grass (Acorus calamus), betel vine (Piper betle), and turmeric (Curcuma longa) were highly toxic to S. pontifica with more than 70% mite mortality observed at 24 h. Dry film effect of essential oils at various concentrations (0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5% equaling to 0, 2.65, 5.3, 26.5, 53 and 79.5 μg cm<sup>-2</sup>, respectively) resulting in mite mortality observed at 24 h was used to establish LD50 values. Based upon 24 h LD50 values, the essential oil of cinnamon (fresh leaf) was the most toxic to the mite with high activity at 24.05 μg cm<sup>-2</sup>, followed by essential oils of clove (dried bud), myrtle grass, cinnamon (dried bark), clove (fresh leaf), turmeric and betel vine at 24.28, 28.34, 30.89, 33.67, 38.09 and 41.76 μg cm<sup>-2</sup>, respectively.
