    A heavy metal contamination problem in Thailand is an important issue that needs to be addressed urgently, particularly contaminated in water. Heavy metal contamination in water can spread to other environments faster. This research aims to apply chitosan-magnetic biochar synthesized from water hyacinth in order to solve the problem of copper and nickel contaminated in water. Data from SEM indicated that chitosan-magnetic biochar had a smoother surface and had smaller holes than the magnetic biochar. When tested with Autosorb-1, results indicated that the adsorbent with chitosan had a slightly lower porosity compared to without chitosan. Data from FTIR found evidence of chitosan on the adsorbent. According to the XRD study, peaks of iron oxide presented. The point of zero charges (pH<inf>PZC</inf>) of chitosan-magnetic biochar was 7.03. The adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics were observed. The adsorption of both Cu and Ni followed Langmuir isotherm. The value of q<inf>max</inf> for Cu was 38.4615 mg/g and for Ni was 0.4858 mg/g. The R2 value of Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm was also high. The E value of Cu and Ni was 0.316 kJ/mol and 1.8962 kJ/mol, respectively. The best-fitting kinetic model for Cu was the pseudo-second-order model and for Ni was the intra-particle diffusion. The adsorption was an endothermic process. The process was spontaneous at high temperatures and non-spontaneous at low temperatures.

    Preparation and heavy metal removal from chitosan composite
    (2016-06-01)
    Recently the removal of trace element using biodegradable polymers is important. This paper involves preparation and evaluation of chitosan/polyethylene glycol blend served as a heavy metal removal system. The author prepared various blending system with different composition ratios and different crosslinking density. Experimental results indicated that swelling degree and thermal property of the blend film were correlated with blend ratio and crosslink density. The blend film was then investigated its metal-binding performance. Copper sorption capacity was one of major potential applications in a field of wastewater treatment.

    Second-order nonlinear optical response of metal nanostructures
    (2014-01-08)
    The second-order responses depend on the structural symmetry of the metal nanostructures, which can give rise to interesting polarization dependences in the responses. We also show that the sensitivity of second-order processes to the symmetry provides important information about plasmonic effects in the nonlinear properties of the structures. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

    A combined approach of scanning electron microscopy and digital image correlation was used to examine microstructure-scale strain localization and active deformation mechanisms in ultrafine-grained (UFG) high purity (99.99%) aluminum processed by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP). The results from tensile tests demonstrate a strong relationship between the heterogeneous microstructure and strain localization. The localized deformation was investigated in areas that contain significantly different microstructural features typical of ECAP processed aluminum. It was found that areas of the UFG microstructure containing primarily low angle grain boundaries deformed by dislocation slip and behaved similarly to a coarse-grained material. The greatest strain localization occurred at high angle grain boundaries (HAGBs) separating distinct microstructure regions and with median surface trace angles of approximately 26.6°. In areas of banded microstructure, shear strain localization as high as 30% and shear displacements of up to 500 nm occurred at the HAGBs separating bands, suggesting grain boundary sliding. Nonlinear optical properties of controlled fabrication of copper nanowires by a shadow deposition
    (2013-01-28)
    The strongly geometrical shape, high aspect ratios, and nanoscale cross-section of nanowires is expected to affect optical properties through confinement effects. Herein we have investigated optical properties of Cu nanowires with studies of second harmonic generation (SHG) spectra. These optical properties of Cu nanowires will be one of the most important issues when considering the types of materials used in current applications and development of new applications. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

    Batch washing of cadmium from soil and sludge by a mixture of Na 2S2O5 and Na2EDTA
    (2004-09-01) ;
    Sriwiriyanuphap, N.
    Washing of cadmium contaminated soil and sludge using a mixture of 0.1 M Na<inf>2</inf>S<inf>2</inf>O<inf>5</inf> and 0.01 M Na<inf>2</inf>EDTA was investigated in the batch mode. Initial Cd concentration in samples was 500 mgkg-1. The sequential extraction was conducted to study of what form that Cd was removed. SPSS program version 9.01 was performed to determine what soil parameter had the greatest influence on the washing. The organic matter in soil was found to be the main factor for the washing. Soil with low organic matter would have high percentage of removing Cd. When adding more washing solution, the Cd removal efficiency was lower. The highest removal efficiency was between 67.83% and 97.3% when using a 1 g:2.5 ml soil to washing solution ratio. The predominant form of the removed Cd was exchangeable form. By contrast for the sludge, the highest Cd removal efficiency was 17.13% when using sludge in washing solution at the ratio of 1 g:7.5 ml. Most of washed Cd was in reducible form. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
