Item type:Item, Silver–water nanofluid flow and convective heat transfer in a microfin tube equipped with loose-fit twisted tapes(2020-06-01) ;Samruaisin, P. ;Wongcharee, K. ;Chuwattanakul, V.Eiamsa-ard, S.Heat transfer enhancement and performance of compact heat exchangers have been extensively studied in the past century for the purpose of promoting energy efficiency. Microfin tubes in single/two/multiple-phase flow heat exchangers into which twisted tape swirl generators are installed can promote heat transfer with a moderate pressure loss penalty. This article reports on the enhanced heat transfer of silver–water nanofluids in a microfin tube into which loose-fit twisted tapes are installed in a counter-flow arrangement. The experiments were carried out using nanofluids with various silver concentrations (0.007–0.03 vol%), loose-fit twisted tapes with clearance ratios (c/D) of 0.0 (tight-fit), 0.05, 0.075 and 0.1, for a twist ratio, y/W, of 2.0. The results indicate that the heat transfer rate (Nu) and pressure drop (f) increase with a decrease in clearance ratio (c/D) and increase in silver (Ag) nanoparticle concentration. Additionally, the thermal performance factor tends to increase with the decrease in Reynolds numbers. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Item, Heat transfer enhancement by helically twisted tapes inducing co- and counter-swirl flows(2013-08-01) ;Nanan, K. ;Yongsiri, K. ;Wongcharee, K. ;Thianpong, C.Eiamsa-ard, S.An experimental investigation has been conducted for determining heat transfer enhancement by inserting helically twisted tapes, to induce co- and counter-swirl flows, (the tapes are symbolized as co-HTT and C-HTT, respectively). Tape pitch ratio (p/ D) was varied between 1.0 and 2.0, while tape width ratio (w/D) and twist ratio (y/w) were fixed at 0.2 and 3.0, respectively. The experiments were performed for fully developed turbulent flow with Reynolds number range (Re) between 6000 and 20,000, under uniform wall heat flux condition. At similar conditions, the use of Co-HTT results in lower Nusselt number and friction factor but higher thermal performance factor than that of C-HTT. Nusselt number and friction factor increase with decreasing pitch ratio, while thermal performance factor possesses opposite trend. In addition, the empirical correlations for Nusselt number, friction factor and thermal performance factor as functions of the Reynolds number (Re), Prandtl number (Pr) and tape pitch (p/D), were developed through a multi-variant linear normal regression. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Item, Turbulent heat transfer enhancement in a heat exchanger using helically corrugated tube(2011-03-01) ;Pethkool, S. ;Eiamsa-ard, S. ;Kwankaomeng, S.Promvonge, P.The augmentation of convective heat transfer in a single-phase turbulent flow by using helically corrugated tubes has been experimentally investigated. Effects of pitch-to-diameter ratio (P/D<inf>H</inf>=0.18, 0.22 and 0.27) and rib-height to diameter ratio (e/D<inf>H</inf>=0.02, 0.04 and 0.06) of helically corrugated tubes on the heat transfer enhancement, isothermal friction and thermal performance factor in a concentric tube heat exchanger are examined. The experiments were conducted over a wide range of turbulent fluid flow of Reynolds number from 5500 to 60,000 by employing water as the test fluid. Experimental results show that the heat transfer and thermal performance of the corrugated tube are considerably increased compared to those of the smooth tube. The mean increase in heat transfer rate is between 123% and 232% at the test range, depending on the rib height/pitch ratios and Reynolds number while the maximum thermal performance is found to be about 2.3 for using the corrugated tube with P/D<inf>H</inf>=0.27 and e/D<inf>H</inf>=0.06 at low Reynolds number. Also, the pressure loss result reveals that the average friction factor of the corrugated tube is in a range between 1.46 and 1.93 times over the smooth tube. In addition, correlations of the Nusselt number, friction factor and thermal performance factor in terms of pitch ratio (P/D<inf>H</inf>), rib-height ratio (e/D<inf>H</inf>), Reynolds number (Re), and Prandtl number (Pr) for the corrugated tube are determined, based on the curve fitting of the experimental data. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Item, Heat transfer enhancement in a tube using delta-winglet twisted tape inserts(2010-03-01) ;Eiamsa-ard, S. ;Wongcharee, K. ;Eiamsa-ard, P.Thianpong, C.Heat transfer, flow friction and thermal performance factor characteristics in a tube fitted with delta-winglet twisted tape, using water as working fluid are investigated experimentally. Influences of the oblique delta-winglet twisted tape (O-DWT) and straight delta-winglet twisted tape (S-DWT) arrangements are also described. The experiments are conducted using the tapes with three twist ratios (y/w = 3, 4 and 5) and three depth of wing cut ratios (DR = d/w = 0.11, 0.21 and 0.32) over a Reynolds number range of 3000-27,000 in a uniform wall heat flux tube. The obtained results show that mean Nusselt number and mean friction factor in the tube with the delta-winglet twisted tape increase with decreasing twisted ratio (y/w) and increasing depth of wing cut ratio (DR). It is also observed that the O-DWT is more effective turbulator giving higher heat transfer coefficient than the S-DWT. Over the range considered, Nusselt number, friction factor and thermal performance factor in a tube with the O-DWT are, respectively, 1.04-1.64, 1.09-1.95, and 1.05-1.13 times of those in the tube with typical twisted tape (TT). Empirical correlations for predicting Nusselt number and friction factor have been employed. The predicted data are within ±10% for Nusselt number and ±10% for friction factor. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Item type:Item, Turbulent heat transfer enhancement by counter/co-swirling flow in a tube fitted with twin twisted tapes(2010-01-01) ;Eiamsa-ard, S. ;Thianpong, C.Eiamsa-ard, P.In the present study, the influences of twin-counter/co-twisted tapes (counter/co-swirl tape) on heat transfer rate (Nu), friction factor (f) and thermal enhancement index (η) are experimentally determined. The twin counter twisted tapes (CTs) are used as counter-swirl flow generators while twin co-twisted tapes (CoTs) are used as co-swirl flow generators in a test section. The tests are conducted using the CTs and CoTs with four different twist ratios (y/w = 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0) for Reynolds numbers range between 3700 and 21,000 under uniform heat flux conditions. The experiments using the single twisted tape (ST) are also performed under similar operation test conditions, for comparison. The experimental results demonstrate that Nusselt number (Nu), friction factor (f) and thermal enhancement index (η) increase with decreasing twist ratio (y/w). The results also show that the CTs are more efficient than the CoTs for heat transfer enhancement. In the range of the present work, heat transfer rates in the tube fitted with the CTs are around 12.5-44.5% and 17.8-50% higher than those with the CoTs and ST, respectively. The maximum thermal enhancement indices (η) obtained at the constant pumping power by the CTs with y/w = 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0, are 1.39, 1.24, 1.12 and 1.03, respectively, while those obtained by using the CoTs with the same range of y/w are 1.1, 1.03, 0.97 and 0.92, respectively. In addition, the empirical correlations of the heat transfer (Nu), friction factor (f) and thermal enhancement index (η) are also reported. © 2009 Elsevier Inc. Item type:Item, Heat transfer behaviors in a tube with combined conical-ring and twisted-tape insert(2007-08-01) ;Promvonge, P.Eiamsa-ard, S.Heat transfer, friction factor and enhancement efficiency characteristics in a circular tube fitted with conical-ring turbulators and a twisted-tape swirl generator have been investigated experimentally. The heat transfer test section is heated electrically imposing axially and circumferentially constant wall heat flux boundary conditions. In the experiments, two enhancement heat transfer devices are applied. One is the conical-ring used as a turbulator and placed in the tested tube and the other is the twisted-tape swirl generator placed at the core of the conical-ring. Air as the tested fluid is passed both enhancement devices in a Reynolds number range of 6000 to 26,000. Two twisted-tapes of different twist ratios, Y = 3.75, and 7.5, are introduced in each run. The experimental results reveal that the tube fitted with the conical-ring and twisted-tape provides Nusselt number values of around 4 to 10% and enhancement efficiency of 4 to 8% higher than that with the conical-ring alone. A maximum heat transfer rate of 367% and enhancement efficiency of around 1.96 is found for using the conical-ring and the twisted-tape of Y = 3.75. For all the devices used, the enhancement efficiency tends to decrease with the rise of Reynolds number and to be nearly uniform for Reynolds number over 16,000. In addition, correlations for Nusselt number, friction factor and performance evaluation criteria to assess the real benefits in using the turbulator and swirl generator of the enhanced tube are determined. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Item type:Item, Enhancement of heat transfer in a circular wavy-surfaced tube with a helical-tape insert(2007-03-01) ;Eiamsa-ard, S.Promvonge, P.The purpose of the present study is to investigate experimentally the heat transfer and turbulent flow friction characteristics in a circular wavy-surfaced and constant heat-flux tube with a helical-tape insert. In the experiment, heat transfer augmentation is expected from both the turbulence of flow near the tube wall produced by the wavy surface and the swirling flow generated by the helical-tape. The experiments are based on Reynolds number at the tube inlet, ranging from 3000 to 9200. The experimental results obtained are compared with those from plain tubes in the literature. The results show that the heat transfer rate from using the wavy surface and helical tape insert is considerably higher than that from the plain tube. The Nusselt numbers and friction factors are found to be, respectively, 3.0 and 50 times over the plain tube for the tube with wavy- surfaced wall alone and to be 4.2 and about 110 times for the tube with combined wavy-surfaced wall and the helical-tape. The wavy-surfaced tube combined with the helical-tape provides higher heat transfer rate and friction factor than the wavy-surfaced tube alone around 57% and 125%, respectively. In addition, effect of insertion of the helical-tape with/without core-rod is also investigated.
