    Effect of polyolefin-coated EDTA (Ethylenediamine Tetraacetic Acid)-K2SO4 on the growth of Italian ryegrass and red clover in sandy soil

    Granulated ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA-2Na) was coated with polyolefin resin to control its release into soil. The granules contained 15.7% EDTA and 71.0% K2S04 on a dry-weight basis and it took 10 weeks for the granules to release the first half of EDTA. Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) were grown in sandy soil with AIPO<inf>4</inf>, FePO<inf>4</inf>, or CaHPO<inf>4</inf> at a concentration of 0,2 g P<inf>2</inf>O<inf>5</inf> pot<sup>−1</sup> (4 kg soil) with and without coated EDTA. Plant growth was significantly enhanced due to the increase in P and K uptake, although, powdery EDTA at the same dose impaired the growth. © 2004 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

    Drought-tolerant characters, yield and its component of an elite landrace upland rice cultivars in Thailand

    In Thailand, rice are cultivated on the rainfed unbunded upland environment about 0.928 million ha annually, which usually subject to drought stress due to an eratic rainfall throughout growing season, and usually having low yield stability and productivity. Two experiments were characterized a drought tolerant-related physiological traits, yield and its components of 6 elite landrace upland rice cultivars (Niaw Dum Luem Phua, Dawk Pa Yawm, hukaothong 2, Sew Gliang, Sam Deuan, and Leb Nok) with IR1552, and Khao Dawk Mali 105, a moderate drought-tolerant check varieties. The first experiment was carried out at King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Bangkok during Aug-Sep 2018 for 4 drought tolerant-related characters at maximum tillering including longest root, root dry weight, root/shoot dry weight ratio, and stomatal conductance. The germinated seeds were grown in a cylindrical like-shape plastic pots, data were recorded for 10 hill/experimental unit. The second experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Rajamangala University of Technology Tawan-Ok, Chon Buri province, on loammy-sand, unbunded upland field under natural rainfed in rainy season (Jul-Nov), 2018. Ungerminated seeds were directly planted with space of 25x25 cm, yield and yield components were sampling recorded for 10 hill/experimental unit. All studied characters among cultivars; longest root, root/shoot dry weight ratio, stomatal conductance, yield and all yield components except, root dry weight were highly significant different (p≤0.01). IR1552 had the highest yield of 72.52 g/hill. Among 6 landrace cultivars, Niaw dum luem phua showed the highest drought tolerant-related characters, yield components, and rough yield of 59.77g/hill. While, Khao Dawk Mali 105 had rough yield of 51.42 g/hill.

    Sustainable Production and Physicochemical Characteristics of Calcium Sulfate Dihydrate Prepared from Waste Eggshells

    Gypsum products (calcium sulfate dihydrate, CaSO<inf>4</inf>·2H<inf>2</inf>O) were synthesized through an eco-friendly and low-cost process by two different renewable calcium carbonate sources (CaCO<inf>3</inf>), hen and duck eggshell wastes, with product yields obtained of 84.73 and 87.74%, respectively. The X-ray fluorescence results indicated that calcium oxide (CaO) and sulfur trioxide (SO<inf>3</inf>) are the major elemental components of CaSO<inf>4</inf>·2H<inf>2</inf>O prepared from both calcium sources. The Fourier transform infrared results confirmed the vibrational characteristics of SO<inf>4</inf><sup>2−</sup> and H<inf>2</inf>O functional groups in the chemical structure of the prepared samples. The X-ray diffraction patterns of CaSO<inf>4</inf>·2H<inf>2</inf>O prepared from both calcium sources confirmed the sample’s crystal structure as well as the chemical formula, after comparing them to the standard powder diffraction file. The crystallite sizes of CaSO<inf>4</inf>·2H<inf>2</inf>O products were calculated from the experimental diffraction peak through the Scherrer equation and found to be 19–20 nm. The positive preferential growth (Pg) value highlighted the excellent stability of the synthesized CaSO<inf>4</inf>·2H<inf>2</inf>O. The scanning electron microscopic results showed the agglomeration particles of hen- and duck-CaCO<inf>3</inf> raw agents, whereas plate-like particles were observed for hen- and duck-CaSO<inf>4</inf>·2H<inf>2</inf>O products but the particle sizes were different.
