Item type:Publication, A critical review of recent investigations on two-phase pressure drop in flow boiling micro-channels(2012-01-01); Wongwises, SomchaiTwo-phase pressure drop during flow boiling has been studied for several decades. Obviously, the publications available on micro-channels are relatively small compared with those for ordinarily sized channels. Although the use of micro-channels yields several advantages, the pressure drop taking p lace in these extremely small channels is higher than that in the ordinarily sized channels because of the increased wall friction. The knowledge of the two-phase pressure drop characteristics in addition to heat transfer phenomena is essential to the design and evaluation of the micro-systems. In this paper, recent research on the flow boiling pressure drop in micro-scale channels is reviewed. The experimental results as well as the relevant prediction methods based on different researchers are presented. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Two-phase flow structures in a helically coiled microchannel: An experimental investigation(2023-10-01); ;Benjawun, Phakkhanan; ;Asirvatham, Lazarus GodsonMondal, Pranab KumarAt the microfluidic scale, the utilization of helically coiled channels (HCCs), also known as a spiral channel, for two-phase flow offers numerous advantages in various applications. Existing articles mainly focus on the macro-scale transport, examining secondary flows induced in curved channels. The increasing demand, however, for innovative miniature equipment for thermal energy management emphasizes the importance of comprehending gas-liquid micro-scale flow in curved channels. Unfortunately, despite a vast body of literature on this paradigm, there is still a lack of systematic investigations into the underlying facets of two-phase micro-scale transport in HCCs. To address this gap, our study conducted experiments on adiabatic two-phase air-water flow inside an up-flow helical micro-scale tube. The tube had a hydraulic diameter of 0.87 mm, a coil diameter of 50 mm, and a helical pitch of 20 mm. The primary aim was to explore the impact of centrifugal force on flow pattern, void fraction, and frictional pressure drop characteristics. Additionally, we carefully examined the phase separation phenomenon influenced by the secondary flows induced by the curved channel. In particular, we compared the gas-core flow pattern (either throat-annular flow or annular flow), void fraction, and frictional pressure drop obtained from our experiments on the helical tube with corresponding results based on straight micro-scale channel configurations for an Eötvös number of approximately 0.01. In summary, this study delves deep into the crucial aspects of two-phase micro-scale transport in HCCs, contributing to a better understanding of these systems for future advancements in micro-channel applications. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, A critical review of recent investigations on flow pattern and heat transfer during flow boiling in micro-channels(2012-01-01); Wongwises, SomchaiA summary of recent research on flow boiling in micro-channels is provided in this article. This review aims to survey and identify new findings arising in this important area, which may contribute to optimum design and process control of high performance miniature devices comprising extremely small channels. Several criteria for defining a micro-channel are presented at first and the recent works on micro-scale flow boiling are subsequently described into two parts including flow visualization and two-phase heat transfer. The results obtained from a number of previous studies show that the flow behaviours and heat transfer mechanisms in micro-channels deviate significantly from those in ordinarily sized channels. Future research with numerous aspects of flow boiling phenomena necessary to answer the fundamental questions is still required. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Two-phase air-water flow in micro-channels: An investigation of the viscosity models for pressure drop prediction(2011-02-01); Wongwises, SomchaiAdiabatic two-phase air-water flow is experimentally studied in this work. Two channels, made of fused silica, with different diameters of 0.53 and 0.15. mm are used as test sections. The void fraction data for both tubes are obtained by image analysis. For the larger channel, the void fraction is found to be a linear relationship with the volumetric quality. In the case of the smaller one, however, the non-linear void fraction is obtained. The measured frictional pressure drop data are compared with the predictions regarding the homogeneous flow assumption. Several well-known two-phase viscosity models are subsequently evaluated for applicability to micro-channels. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Adiabatic two-phase gas-liquid flow behaviors during upward flow in a vertical circular micro-channel(2015-12-01); Wongwises, SomchaiA two-phase air-water flow experiment was carried out to obtain flow pattern, void fraction, and pressure drop data from a vertical micro-channel, which was a fused silica tube with a diameter of 0.53. mm and a length of 320. mm. The adiabatic two-phase flow behaviors during vertical upward direction were experimentally investigated, and consequently, a buoyancy effect can be detected in this work. A flow visualization study was performed, leading to observation of slug flow, throat-annular flow, churn flow, annular flow, and annular-rivulet flow. The shape of the interfacial surface in the slug flow pattern was deformed during vertical upward flow, which was different from the bullet-shaped gas slug observed in the horizontal channel. The flow visualization results also indicate that the flow pattern map for vertical upward flow is not completely compatible with that for horizontal flow. Image analysis was performed to determine the void fraction, which increases linearly with increasing volumetric quality. The vertical upward flow gave a lower void fraction than the horizontal flow. The frictional pressure drop can be increased when the churn flow is formed in the channel. In addition, vertical upward flow can result in higher pressure drop when compared with the horizontal channel. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Flow pattern and heat transfer characteristics of R-134a refrigerant during flow boiling in a horizontal circular mini-channel(2010-09-01); ;Kaew-On, JatupornWongwises, SomchaiFlow boiling heat transfer of R-134a refrigerant in a circular mini-channel, 600mm long with a diameter of 1.75mm, is investigated experimentally in this study. The test section is a stainless steel tube placed horizontally. Flow pattern and heat transfer coefficient data are obtained for a mass flux range of 200-1000kg/m2s, a heat flux range of 1-83kW/m2 and saturation pressures of 8, 10, and 13bar. Five different flow patterns including slug flow, throat-annular flow, churn flow, annular flow and annular-rivulet flow are observed and the heat transfer coefficient data for different flow patterns are presented. The heat transfer coefficient increases with increasing heat flux but is mostly independent of mass flux and vapour quality. In addition, it is indicated from the experiments that the higher the saturation pressure, the lower is the heat transfer coefficient. Comparisons of the present data with the existing correlations are also presented. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Heat transfer characteristics of gas-liquid flow in horizontal rectangular micro-channels(2014-05-01); ;Kuaseng, PiyawatWongwises, SomchaiAn experimental study of heat transfer characteristics of air-water flow in horizontal micro-channels was carried out in this work. The gas-liquid mixture from a y-shaped mixing chamber was forced to pass through a plenum inlet and entered 21 parallel rectangular micro-channels 40. mm long in the direction of flow. Each channel had a width and a depth of 0.45 and 0.41. mm, respectively. The test runs were done at a heat load of 80. W, with superficial Reynolds numbers of gas and liquid ranging between 54-142 and 131-373, respectively. A Stereozoom microscope and camera system were employed to conduct flow visualization. To explore the dependence of a Nusselt number on the flow characteristics, two inlet sections with different designs were used in this work. The experiments revealed that the formation of small gas slugs instead of gas core flow involves an increase in Nusselt numbers. In this work, the gas-liquid flow gave heat transfer enhancement up to 80% over the liquid flow. © 2014 Elsevier Inc. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, An experimental investigation of flow boiling heat transfer of R-134a in horizontal and vertical mini-channels(2013-04-01); ;Kaew-On, JatupornWongwises, SomchaiFlow boiling experiments with R-134a flowing in horizontal and vertical mini-channels are performed to obtain flow visualization and heat transfer data. A 1.75mm diameter channel with a length of 600mm is used as test section. Two sets of the horizontal flow and vertical upward flow data are presented based on a mass flux range of 200-1000kg/m2s, a heat flux range of 1-80kW/m2 and a saturation pressure range of 7-13bar. Flow visualization and heat transfer results show heat transfer coefficient depending on flow pattern. The results also indicate that flow regime transition and heat transfer coefficient tend to depend on flow direction under the certain experimental conditions. In addition, the comparisons between the experimental data and the predictions recommended for either macro-scale flow boiling or micro-scale flow boiling are presented in this work. © 2012 Elsevier Inc. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Flow pattern, void fraction and pressure drop during adiabatic two-phase gas-liquid flow in vertical micro-channel(2012-12-01); Wongwises, SomchaiThe experimental investigation is performed to study twophase flow pattern, void fraction and pressure drop characteristics in a vertical micro-channel. The test section is a fused silica tube with a diameter of 0.53 mm and a length of 320 mm. Air and water are used as working fluid which is introduced to the test section in vertical upward direction. The test runs are done at superficial velocities of gas and liquid ranging respectively from 0.375 to 21.187 m/s and 0.004 to 2.436 m/s. Stereozoom microscope mounted together with camera are employed to conduct flow visualization from which slug flow, throat-annular flow, churn flow, annular flow and annular-rivulet flow are observed. Based on image analysis, void fraction data are obtained and found to be linear relationship with volumetric quality. The frictional pressure drop is relatively high when the formation of churn flow is established. Besides, the two-phase frictional multiplier is found to be strongly dependent on both mass flux and flow pattern. Copyright © 2012 by ASME.1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Pool boiling heat transfer enhancement of distilled water with passive rotating blades installed above the heating surface(2017-01-01); ; Wongwises, SomchaiThis study examined the pool boiling heat transfer of distilled water on a copper heating surface with passive rotating blades installed above the heating surface. The rotating blades were made from copper material, with a diameter of 30 mm, a core of 5 mm, a length of 50 mm, and a blade angle of 90°. The number of blades in this experiment varied between 2, 3, and 4. The study examined the effects of a varying number of blades and the distance between the heating surface and rotating blades (L<inf>SB</inf>) on the pool boiling heat transfer coefficient. The experimental results show that, when compared under the same conditions, the rotor with four blades yielded a higher heat transfer coefficient than those with two and three blades. This is because the added blades increased the area that received strike force from the bubbles. As a result, the rotating blades created more disturbance of the working fluid over the heating surface. Furthermore, when compared with the same number of blades, the L<inf>SB</inf> of 5 mm yielded a higher heat transfer coefficient than the L<inf>SB</inf> of 15 or 25 mm. This is because the increased L<inf>SB</inf> provided less chance for the bubbles to strike the rotating blades. Hence, the rotating blades did not create a disturbance of the working fluid over the heating surface.2
