Item type:Publication, The effect of form factors of shock absorption mat’s subunits on attenuation of force from elderly’s fall(2018-01-01) ;Atthawuttikul, AriyaBackground and Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate how differently various form factors of subunits of shock absorption mat attenuate force from the elderly’s fall. Methods: The study procedures were the following: (1) literature review: possible form factors affecting the shock absorbing capacity were analyzed and synthesized from the review; (2) synthesis of design criteria: criteria for force simulation were formulated based on the information from the review; and (3) simulation: simulation of force from elderly’s fall absorbed by such mats with the following control and independent variables that were analyzed and synthesized in the previous steps: (control variables): 1) impact force, 2) physical properties of the rubber material; (independent variables): 1) form of cross-section, 2) form of edges, 3) pattern of arrangement of subunits in the structural layer, and 4) dimensional proportion of subunits. Results and Conclusion: The simulation results show that the subunits with a circular-cross-section and hourglass-like-edge form factors were the best at attenuating impact force. The best pattern of subunit arrangement was a table arrangement. This study was a preliminary study to a design of subunits of shock absorption mat. The results would be used in the next, more comprehensive study. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, PACKAGING DESIGN TOOL: THE EFFECTIVENESS OF OPENING INDICATIONS FOR OLDER PEOPLE(2023-05-01)Packaging with a novel appearance and opening method is a powerful marketing strategy. However, accessibility to products can be limited for older consumers due to unfamiliarity with how to open the packaging. This research evaluated the outcomes of a previous study regarding design tools that determined the ease of instructions explaining opening methods of novel packaging for older people. This manuscript is structured into two phases. Phase one evaluates a diagram identifying the effectiveness of opening directions. A triangulation investigation was conducted to compare the evaluations from a researcher, designers, and 36 older participants. The researcher and designers used the diagram to examine the opening instructions of five packages, while older participants opened the packages to help investigate the clarity of the given directions. The results were inconsistent; therefore, the diagram to identify the effectiveness was unreliable. Accordingly, the researcher revised the diagram and combined it with the packaging design tool, utilizing the data from three designer focus groups and older participants’ in-depth interviews. The final design tool was a step-by-step checklist guiding designers to analyze opening indications, then identify design problems. Phase two centered on examining two aims: to assess the revised design tool used for creating effective opening directions for older people and to formulate considerations for developing the design tool. Twelve designers applied the design tool to redesign the misleading directions of two packages. It was found that of the two directions for opening the redesigned packages, one was easier to understand for the older participants than the other. The design tool was efficient when the package adopted simple directions. The design tool improvement considered its contents—balancing between thorough checklists and overloading contents; its method—recognizing the difference between older people’s and designers' cognition regarding opening indications; and its form—applying graphic-oriented design. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, The Creation of Single-Use Packaging from Leaves to Reduce Plastic Waste in Thailand(2021-07-01) ;Asawadechsakdi, WilaiThis research aims to analyze design criteria for creating single-use packaging from leaves to reduce plastic bag waste generated by street food and T-shirt purchases along with evaluating tools for producing these biodegradeable packages. Design Thinking was utilized as a conceptual research framework. The research covered consumers, street food vendors and packaging producers. Observations and interview forms were used to collect data on the characteristics of different leaf varieties and street food, plus related user behaviors and needs. After data analysis, prototype packages were created: hard structure packaging made from fresh Noni leaves and bamboo strips and soft structure packaging made from dried leaves from the Purple Orchid tree and Banana tree derived cords. These multipurpose containers address the design criteria: supporting the food's weight, carrying both dry finger food and moist food and being held with one hand. Evaluation of the tools producing the packaging suggested development gaps related to simplicity were recognized.
