    Effects of Demand Fluctuation and Mitigation Strategy in Low Voltage EV Charging Station by Battery Energy Storage System

    In this paper, the effects of fluctuating demand on a low voltage electric utility system equipped with electric vehicular charging station have been studied and mitigation strategy has been proposed. By applying Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and demand management (DMM), the stored electric energy during an off-peak period is controlled to supply the spiky demand during the EV charging period. Employing different approaches of discharging control, the BESS can response and shape the peaky demand into the smoothed one with an elevated load factor. Therefore, the result is that energy cost of EV charging has been reduced by cutting the demand charge during the on-peak period and the power quality of the system has also been improved. These findings are confirmed and illustrated by simulation results.

    Mathematical Modeling of Energy Efficiency in Thai Sugar Mills: a Case Study of Different Production Scales from Three Mills

    Energy efficiency in energy-intensive industry is the crucial issue on reduction of energy usage that affects energy cost and carbon emissions. One of the promised approaches in decreasing energy consumption is practicing energy efficiency improvement. In order to attain such conditions, energy efficiency models of the process must have to be known as a primary step by gathering data and relevant parameters to energy consumption throughout the production process. In this paper, a case study of mathematical modeling of energy efficiency of three different production scales from three sugar mills in Thailand is proposed. By appropriate applying mathematical models to the given data collection, the retrieval models of energy consumption and Specific Energy Consumption (SEC) had been obtained with a certain accuracy and precise prediction during a highly non-linear data range. The results illustrated that electrical and thermal processes of those three sugar mills have similar energy consumption and specific energy consumption models, whereas the retrieved energy consumption models are different to the specific ones respectively. The key finding results in this study is useful for energy management in sugar production industry in two levels. The first is production planning with minimum energy cost by applying the SEC models corresponding to thermal or electrical energy related process. The second is that the SEC models can locate the most-significant energy use and opportunity to technical improvement or retrofitting the process.

    A nonintrusive beef grading evaluation based on marbling fat imaging by using K-Means Clustering Technique

    An alternative technique of beef quality assessment and grading was proposed using image analysis based on the K-means clustering algorithm as a semi-automated and nonintrusive approach. An input image of the rib-eye meat area was converted into L*a*b* color space, followed by classifying groups of features over the spatial domain. By performing a search and cluster, iterating the features of the target image in a*b* axes resulted in several distinct image zones categorized by different K-groups of features. Marbling fat was estimated in conjunction with quality assessment as an arbitrary grading system. Experimental testing on both synthetic and real image data suggested accuracy better than 95% of averaged. As comparison to conventional methods, this technique is nonintrusive, nondestructive, fast and economic for application and implementation as a measuring tool in the meat research industry.

    Temperature Distribution and Combustion Characteristics of Rice Husks in a Fluidized Bed Combustor

    This article presents an experimental study on the combustion characteristics of rice husks in a fluidized bed combustor (FBC). In the experiments, the FBC was tested with rice husk feeding rates ranging from 10-15.5 kg/hr to yield percent excess air (EA) between 25% and 35%. The axial and radial temperature distribution within the FBC was measured at a selected location while gas emissions were also monitored. From the experimental results, it can be seen that the maximum exhaust gas temperature is between 852 and 950 °C. In the exhaust gas emission analysis, CO is in the range of 951-1452 ppm, NO between 271 ppm and 303 ppm, CO<inf>2</inf> between 6.5% and 9.5%, and O<inf>2</inf> between 5.1% and 12.8%.

    SVM-based stator fault diagnosis for induction motors using DQ0 voltage components

    This paper presents a new technique for diagnosis of stator winding shorted turns in three phase induction motors using support vector machine (SVM) as a classifier in conjunction with a voltage signature analysis as feature extraction. The proposed dqO voltage components related to three phase voltages are obtained by using Park's transformation. Unlike general dqO quantity, the required dq components are considered from only harmonics in a certain range resulted from the stator shorted turn fault whilst the required zero component is determined from the fundamental voltage excitation only. The procedure for finding the harmonic spectrum associated with the stator fault employs a FFT technique together with digital signal processing in order to enlarge such harmonics to be easily detected. The data of d, q and zero components will be used as the input features for a SVM classification and diagnosis. In order to confirm that the dqO voltage components could be used as quantity for identifying the stator fault, patterns of dqO voltage components in three-dimension are plotted. The obtained trajectories are obviously different depending on the severity of the shorted turn fault. In training and testing with a multiclass-SVM classification, the good accuracy is obtained under various load conditions for both healthy and stator fault conditions. The SVM classification performance of the proposed method has high accuracy greater than 98% comparable to other feature extraction processes such as a motor current signature method (MCSA) but the number of training data and features for the proposed technique are less. © 2010 ICIC International.

    Investigation of Combustion Characteristics in a Vortexing Fluidized-bed Combustor with a Contraction Chamber

    This investigation was undertaken to obtain information on the effects of a contraction chamber and secondary air ratio (λ) on combustion temperature distribution, gas emissions of rice husk combustion and flow behaviours in a vortexing fluidized-bed combustor with a contracted chamber (VFBCC).The combustor chamber was modified by reducing the diameter chamber size (contraction) near the top part of the chamber to create a large central recirculation zone. In the experiment, the effects of secondary air ratio (λ) of 0.0, 0.25 and 0.4, and the equivalent ratio, (ϕ) of 0.2, 0.25, 0.3 on combustion characteristics and temperature distribution were examined. The results indicated that the temperature profile inside the combustor between a typical vortexing fluidized-bed combustor (VFBC) and VFBCC was slightly different.The emission of VFBCC was lower than in the original VFBC. At the equivalent ratio of 0.3 and secondary air ratio of 0.4, the average concentrations of O2, CO2, CO and NOx of the flue gases from the original VFBC were 10.5%, 6.7%, 717 ppm and 287 ppm, respectively while those from the modified VFBCC were 9.7%, 6.3%, 357 ppm, and 250 ppm, respectively. In addition, flow visualization results showed the presence of a contracted part led to the recirculation formation in the top chamber.
