An experimental investigation on the aerothermal performance of a heat exchanger tube equipped with newly designed broken V-ribbed twisted tapes (B-VRT), was carried out. In the present work, the heat transfer intensification by a B-VRT can be attributed to greater mixing caused by two flow characteristics: 1) longitudinal vortices from the ribs and 2) swirling flow from the twisted tape. The B-VRT with rib attack angles (α) of 45°, 60°, 75°, and 90°, were tested using air as the test fluid. The experimental results of the tube with B-VRTs in a forward/backward arrangement were compared to those of a plain tube alone and a tube with typical twisted tapes (TT) for Reynolds numbers between 6,000 and 20,000. The results indicated that the tube with the B-VRT having forward facing ribs with α = 45° gave the best performance with Nusselt number ratio (Nu/Nup) of 2.27, a friction factor (f/fp) of 4.4, and an aerothermal performance factor (APF) of 1.38. For the range investigated, the B-VRT offered up to 31.9% higher Nusselt numbers than TT. The B-VRT with the smallest rib attack angle (α) of 45° offered higher aerothermal performance factors than the ones with rib attack angles (α) of 60°, 75°, and 90° by approximately 6.85%, 12.99%, and 20.2%, respectively. The results of the B-VRT with optimum geometry (α = 45°) were benchmarked against those reported in similar published papers. Evidently, the aerothermal performance factors the B-VRT were superior to those of most of other tube inserts, especially at low Reynolds numbers. Finally, within the range of parameters (α, y/W and Re) taken into consideration in this study, correlations of Nu and f were developed to estimate the heat transfer and pressure drop. The correlations for Nu, f, and APF showed acceptable prediction accuracies, with respective deviations of ±4%, ±5.4%, and ±4%.

This research examines the effects of oval inclined twisted rings (I-TRs) on thermal performance characteristics. Heat transfer enhancement, friction factor, and thermal enhancement factor tests were conducted under uniform wall heat flux with Reynolds numbers (Re) varying from 6000 to 20,000. A systematic investigation was carried out to examine the influence of different pitch ratios (p/D) and oval-ring inclination angles (θ) on thermal enhancement factor (TEF). The experimental results reveal that the Nusselt number increases with decreasing pitch ratio (p/D) and inclination angle (θ) of the I-TRs. At p/D = 1.5, the Nusselt numbers are approximately 8.59 % to 18.78 % higher than those for I-TRs with p/D values of 2.0 and 2.5. At the smallest inclination angle, θ = 30°, the Nusselt numbers are approximately higher than those at θ = 45°, 60°, 75°, and 90° by around 1.56 %, 7.21 %, 13.74 %, and 27.14 %, respectively. At a p/D ratio of 1.5 and an inclination angle of θ = 30°, the resulting thermal enhancement factor (TEF) consistently exceeds unity across the entire Reynolds number (Re) range. In contrast, for other geometries and configurations, some TEF values fall below unity at higher Re. Within the studied range, the highest TEF of 1.12 is achieved at θ = 30°, p/D = 1.5, and Re = 6,000. The key finding suggests that the performance of the thermal system is highly dependent on both the configuration and operational conditions.

Twisted tape inserts were used as swirl generators in the flow through a tube for enhancing heat transfer. Twisted tapes have commonly been applied in many thermal applications used in industry. Several modified twisted tapes have been investigated for improving the thermal performance of heat exchangers. The effects in tubes with modified rectangular-cut twisted tape (RC-TT) inserts with various free-spacing ratios (s/w = 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0) and edge–width ratios (t/W = 0.1, 0.15, 0.2 and 0.25) on heat transfer and pressure losses are reported. The RC-TT used in this work had a fixed thickness of 1.2 mm, width of 60 mm, length of 2000 mm and twist ratio (y/W) of 3.0. Experiments were performed over a range of Reynolds numbers, 10,000 ≤ Re ≤ 20,000, using air as a test fluid. A tube with a classical/typical twisted tape was also tested for comparison. In all cases, the Nusselt number tended to increase with the Reynolds number, while the friction factor and thermal performance showed the opposite trend. For the rectangular-cut twisted tape inserts, the friction factor and Nusselt number decreased, while thermal performance increased with increasing free-spacing ratios (s/w) and edge–width ratios (t/W). Furthermore, the maximum thermal performance was achieved at the lowest free-spacing ratio (s/w), edge–width ratio (t/W) and Reynolds number (Re).

Nowadays, heat transfer enhancement plays an important role in improving efficiency of heat transfer and thermal systems for numerous areas such as heat recovery processes, chemical reactors, air-conditioning/refrigeration system, food engineering, solar air/water heater, cooling of high power electronics etc. The present work presents the experimental results of the heat transfer enhancement of TiO<inf>2</inf>/water nanofluid in a heat exchanger tube fitted with double twisted tapes. The study covered twist ratios of twisted tapes (y/w) of 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5) while the concentration of the nanofluid was kept constant at 0.05% by volume. Observations show that heat transfer, friction loss and thermal performance increase as twist ratio (y/w) decreases. The use of the nanofluid in the tube equipped with the double twisted-tapes with the smallest twist ratio (y/w = 1.5) results in the increases of heat transfer rates and friction factor up to 224.8% and 8.98 times, respectively as compared to those of water. In addition, the experimental results performed that double twisted tapes induced dual swirling-flows which played an important role in improving fluid mixing and heat transfer enhancement. It is also observed that the TiO2/water nanofluid was responsible for low pressure loss behaviors.

In this current work, the effect of utilizing arc-shaped twisted-baffles (T-ABs) in a rectangular air channel on thermal performance factor (TPF) has been experimentally studied. In these experiments, the influence of the changes in parameters such as dimensions of pitch ratio (p/w), attached arc-shape angle (α), and Reynolds number (Re) are explored. The comparisons demonstrate that a channel mounted with arc-shaped twisted-baffles yielded considerably greater Nusselt numbers than a smooth channel, possibly attributable to multiple-impinging jets near the channel surface. Heat transfer enhancements of twisted arc-shaped baffles (T-AB) having larger attack angles were superior to those having smaller attack angles. The one with α = 90o offered greater heat transfer rates than the ones with α = 20o, 40o, 60o, and 80o by approximately 8%, 7%, 4%, and 2%, respectively. The superior heat transfer was attributed to the better contact between the working fluid and heat transfer surfaces. In addition, utilizing arc-shaped twisted-baffles with the lowest p/w of 4.0, in a channel produced stronger vortices and multiple impinging jets, which caused better fluid mixing than other p/w. The optimum condition is achieved using T-ABs at an attached arc-shape angle of α = 90o, p/w = 4.0 and Re = 4000, where the heat transfer rate (Nu), friction factor (f) and TPF are found to be, respectively, 3.31, 4.68 and 1.98 times greater than those of a plain channel.

The objective of this research is to study the effect of swirling impinging jet on the heat transfer in the impinged plated by using thermochromic liquid crystal (TLC) sheet. In the experiments, the nozzle having a diameter of 20 mm (D) was installed with four-channel twisted tape as a longitudinal swirling strip. The jet impingement was performed at jet-to-plate distances (L/D) of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7, and constant Reynolds number (Re) of 5000. The experimental results showed that the swirling jet induced by the four-channel twisted tape gave higher heat transfer rates than the conventional jet at the same operating conditions. The highest average heat transfer rate was obtained at the jet-to-plate distance (L/D) of 2.

The article presents the heat transfer and friction factor characteristics of turbulent flow in a uniform wall heat flux tube inserted with delta-winged dual twisted tapes. The typical dual twisted tapes (DTs) with constant twist ratio of y/W = 3.0 and delta-winged dual twisted tapes with delta-winged attack angle of α = 30° and β = 30° were carried out. Influences of the delta-winged arrangements in (1) the parallel direction (DT-PW) and (2) the counter direction (DT-CW) on the thermal performance characteristics were also described. The experimental results found that the use of the dual twisted tapes with parallel wing arrangements (DT-PW) provide the heat transfer higher than those the typical dual twisted tapes (DTs) and dual twisted tapes with counter wing arrangements (DT-CW) around 6.6-7.3% and 5.5-8%, respectively, due to stronger of dual-swirling/turbulent flow leading to better fluid mixing between the core and near tube walls while the friction factor is increasing up to 10.9 times above the plain tube. The typical dual twisted tapes (DTs), dual twisted tapes with parallel wing arrangements (DT-PW) and dual twisted tapes with counter wing arrangements (DT-CW) performs the highest thermal performance factor up to 1.2, 0.9 and 0.85 at Reynolds number of 6000.

The effect of conical air distributors on the drying of peppercorns in a fluidized bed dryer was experimentally studied. A flat perforated sheet was installed in the column at the base of the bed. Conical air distributors consisted of two parts. The first was a solid cone located below an air duct, while the second part was a perforated metal cone placed on the flat perforated sheet. Experiments were carried out using perforated metal cones with three different height to base diameter ratios, (h/H) values of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 and three different air velocities, 1.2Umf, 1.6Umf, and 2.0Umf. An air distributor, consisting of a solid cone and a perforated metal cone with h/H = 1.0 and an air velocity of 2.0Umf, showed the best drying performance. It was also discovered that increasing the air velocity accelerated the drying process. A neural network was created to predict the moisture content of peppercorns during the drying process. The split, sample type, spilt ratio, momentum, and learning rate, as well as the numbers of hidden layers, hidden nodes, and training cycles all had an impact. A maximum coefficient of determination of 0.996 was found for the best model.

This paper presented a numerical investigation on turbulent periodic flow, heat transfer, pressure loss and thermal enhancement factor in a 3D five-start spiral corrugated tube. Air was used as the working fluids through the tube for Reynolds numbers of about 5000-20,000. In the current studied, the five-start spiral corrugated tube with six relative pitch ratios (p/D, PR=1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5) with constant depth ratio (e/D, DR=0.06). The numerical results reveal that the five-start spiral corrugated tube can generated a swirl flow, main swirl flow and five-secondary swirl flow. This behavior lead to the major change of temperature in transverse plane, reduced thermal layer thickness and enhanced heat transfer on the tube wall. The five-start spiral corrugated tube in range investigated provided the heat transfer rate and friction factor up to 2.02 and 6.12 times, respectively, over the straight circular tube. The thermal enhancement factor of the five-start spiral corrugated tube in the range of 0.89-1.16 where its maximum found as the optimum point is at PR=2.0.

This study presents a detailed computational investigation of unsteady laminar flow around two-dimensional square cylinders arranged in multiple configurations. Simulations were performed using ANSYS Fluent 2019 at Reynolds numbers ranging from 50 to 200, with three geometric layouts as follows: two vertically aligned cylinders, three inline cylinders, and three staggered cylinders. Center-to-center spacing ratios of 1.5D, 2.5D, and 3.5D were evaluated to assess wake interference, vortex shedding behavior, and aerodynamic force fluctuations. Results reveal that a close spacing (1.5D) causes strong wake coupling and highly irregular flow behavior, especially with inline configurations, leading to amplified drag and suppressed vortex shedding with downstream cylinders. In contrast, a staggered three-cylinder arrangement at 3.5D spacing exhibits regular vortex shedding, uniform force distribution, and minimized flow-induced oscillations, indicating aerodynamic stability. The Strouhal number, computed using FFT analysis, confirms the onset of periodic shedding at higher Reynolds numbers and highlights optimal synchronization at wider spacings. The study concludes that staggered configurations with appropriate spacing outperform inline setups in terms of flow control, dynamic stability, and reduced aerodynamic interference, offering insights relevant to high-rise building clusters and industrial heat exchanger design.
