    Currently, the calibration of burn-in chambers used in a HDDs (Hard Disk Drives) production line requires an engineer to manually monitor temperatures at the hybrid temperature recorders throughout the entire period of calibration process. It is a time consuming and inefficient operation, due to a large number of burn-in chambers used in the production line comparing with a limited number of engineers to handle. Therefore, this paper describes the prototype development of hybrid temperature recorder monitoring system implemented to improve the current manual calibration process of burn-in chamber. The work in this paper applies an objectoriented analysis and design methodology (OOADM) in the development process. The proposed system comprises two subsystems, i.e., a temperature recording subsystem and a monitoring subsystem, interconnected through a wireless network. The temperature recording subsystem performs capturing temperatures from sensors inside the burn-in chamber and sending the temperature data to a central server at the monitoring subsystem in the engineering office for monitoring in real-time. When the errors occur during the calibration process, the alarm signal is displayed and sent to the engineer for alerting. Furthermore, the temperature data is stored in a database for future verification and reference. © 2010 IEEE.

    In current HDDs (Hard Disk Drives) production line, the calibration process of burn-in chambers is required an engineer to manually monitor temperatures at the hybrid temperature recorder throughout the period of calibration process. It is a time consuming and inefficient operation, due to a large amount of burn-in chambers used in the production line comparing with a limited number of engineers to handle. To improve the monitoring procedure of current calibration process, a hybrid temperature recorder monitoring system is developed. The system is composed of two subsystems, i.e., a temperature recording subsystem and a monitoring subsystem, interconnected through a wireless network. To verify the accuracy of system operation, the simulation experiment is set up by acquiring an actual data from current calibration process in the production line. The actual data used to verify in the experiment reflects the results of operation found in three cases, i.e., normal operation, loose probe, and broken probe. The experimental results express that the system yields the same outcomes as in the actual operation of current calibration process. Therefore, the hybrid temperature recorder monitoring system can perform the operation accurately and can be deployed into the actual process in the future. © 2011 IEEE.

    Recently, a formal development process of robot in an application level has not been sufficiently encouraged and promoted. This leads an insufficient procedure to improve the robot development process in the application level. This article introduces an Object-Oriented Analysis and Design Methodology (OOADM) that is applicable to the robot development process, i.e., a field sensing robot, in the application level. The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is used as a tool for analysis and design of the field sensing robot. The Mindstorms Lego model RCX is deployed as the main robot hardware and the C++ programming language is employed as the software tool for implementing the field sensing robot application. The tasks of robot are defined to move across the fields, to avoid the obstacles, and to reach the end point, according to the requirement. The robot employs the light sensor to detect the field surfaces in order to specify different types of movement, i.e., moving on a normal surface, increasing and reducing speed across a slop surface, and moving within a boundary. In addition, the robot uses the touch sensors to detect the obstacles during its movement toward the end point and to dodge the obstacles when hitting them. The robot operation is completed when the end point is detected. By following the formal standard development process using the UML model, the application of robot can be implemented rapidly and efficiently. © 2008 IEEE.

    (2002-12-01) ; ;
    Ohara, S.
    Human-machine interfacing technologies lead the human to communicate with virtual environment in various effective format and more interactive manner. With the combination of keyboard, mouse, haptic, gesture, speech, and vision modes, the interfaces allow human to be involved with the virtual environment in multimodal form, as if they are embedded as a part of simulation. However, with different mechanism and computing method in multimode interface, they lack of synchronization to support human interaction in the virtual environment. This paper explained human-machine interfacing techniques and proposed multimodal synchronization mechanism to control the tempo and to solve the problems of multimodal interaction. The experimental set to verify human perception with multimode human-machine interface in distributed virtual environment was described at the end. The result gave some figure of how human could adjust their perception to be synchronized with the interactive event in the virtual environment through multimode interface.

    This article proposes a prototype development of ET (Embedded technology) rescue robot that follows an object-oriented analysis and design methodology (OOADM) by using a UML (Unified modeling language) as a tool in the process. The idea is to improve the robot application development process to be efficient, rapid, and conformable with the standard by using the UML. The ET rescue robot prototype comprises of the two systems; a robot control system and a victim discovering system. The robot operation control is performed by a computer that interconnects the robot via a Bluetooth network. The operator monitors the robot operation by using video, sound, and temperature data that are captured through a camera, sound sensor, and temperature sensor installed on the robot to discover the victim, respectively. The robot was tested and experimented under the environment imitated the victim discovery in disastrous scenario. The result reflected that the prototype of ET rescue robot can be developed in the application level by following the OOADM as specified in the requirements. ©2009 IEEE.

    An application of linear programming for vertical handover decision making
    (2012-12-01) ;
    Panjanda, Wittaya
    Currently, there are several wireless access networks available to support mobile users. Furthermore, new services have also emerged and aim to allow such mobile users to access the services from anywhere at any time without interruption while moving across heterogeneous wireless access networks. The new services require internetworking and integrated solutions between existing heterogeneous wireless network technologies, e.g., cellular networks and wireless local area network (WLAN). The main objective is to enable the mobile users to access the services with different bandwidth, quality of service (QoS), throughput, and delay while roaming seamlessly. Thus, vertical handover (VHO) is the major concern for such seamless mobility support. This article introduced the linear programming technique used for VHO decision strategies. The proposed linear programming technique aims to provide the optimization result for VHO decision making on mobile devices. The preliminary experiment is conducted by simulation to investigate the proposed linear programming model and the optimization result. The experimental result expresses that the optimized values used for VHO decision making can be obtained by using various network parameters. Therefore, the proposed linear programming can be deployed to support the VHO decision making. © 2012 IEEE.

    Searching optimization route by using Pareto solution with ant algorithm for mobile robot in rough terrain environment
    A problem related to searching routes of a mobile robot involves finding the route that has the shortest distance and consumes the least energy, or an energy-efficient route. An ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm can be used to solve this problem, but only on a flat terrain, since energy is depended on the distance. The adapted ACO can also be applied for searching the energy-efficient routes in the rough terrain, but it is difficult to achieve both criteria, simultaneously. In the rough terrain, the least energy route might not have the shortest distance. Also, the route having the shortest distance might not consume the least energy. In this scenario, an optimized route is required. This paper proposes a method to find the optimized route of a mobile robot in terms of energy and distance on the rough terrain by using a Pareto solution with adapted ACO algorithm. In the proposed method, the adapted ACO is applied for searching a set of routes that consumes the least energy. Then, the Pareto solution is deployed to find the optimized route in terms of energy and distance. The experiment was conducted by simulation to verify the proposed searching method. The experimental result shows that the optimized route having appropriate energy and distance can be found. It can be implied that this optimized route is the energy-efficient route in rough terrain environment.

    Performance evaluation of location based service protocol for indoor and outdoor operations
    (2012-12-01) ;
    Pragotchue, Prakat
    An operation of indoor and outdoor localization mechanisms cannot be fully integrated because the techniques and operation methods are different. As the consequence, a seamless mobility support in location based services for mobile applications cannot be achieved. They still face discontinuity of services when the mobile users move from indoor to outdoor and vice versa, or between WLANs and cellular networks. This paper presents the operation of Location Based Service Protocol (LBSP) to support the seamless mobility of location based service applications on mobile users. The actual application is implemented to obtain the processing time of LBSP operation when operating indoor and outdoor. The data are collected and used to evaluate the LBSP performance by simulation. The LBSP application is implemented on Android mobile device by using Java, and the simulation is performed by using OPNET Modeler 14.0 Education Version. The performance is evaluated in terms of traffic, throughput, and response time between a server and the mobile users, i.e., mobile station (MS) and user equipment (UE), on the Internet. The simulation results expresses that the LBSP can support the increasing number of mobile users without degrading the traffic. It preserves the response time and throughput when the number of mobile users is increased as well. © 2012 IEEE.

    This paper addresses the enhancement of the Wi-Fi-based fingerprint technique for an indoor positioning system applied in an experimental area. The conventional Wi-Fi-based fingerprint technique utilizes a k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) algorithm for position estimation. The k-NN algorithm is a simple and intuitive classification algorithm based on distance metric, i.e., Euclidean distance (ED), but often demonstrates limited accuracy. To mitigate this constraint and enhance positioning precision, advanced machine learning algorithms in artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been introduced. Although ANN algorithms are considered highly reliable, they are complex and resource-intensive algorithms, resulting in less suitable for a small-scale area that requires simple indoor positioning applications. In contrast, the random forest (RF) algorithm offers comparable positioning accuracy while being more computationally efficient, making it a favorable choice for such scenarios. The work in this paper enhances the accuracy of the Wi-Fi-based fingerprint technique for indoor positioning systems by adopting the RF algorithm over the k-NN alternative for position estimation accuracy. The number of received signal strength (RSS) data selected from appropriate access points (APs) in the area chosen by a feature selection method is a pivotal factor influencing accuracy improvements. The experimental results express the direct correlation between increased RSS data and accuracy improvement for both algorithms. Significantly, the application of the feature selection method using the information gain ratio augments the positioning accuracy specifically for the RF algorithm.

    A scoring method improvement of analytic hierarchy process using linear programming technique for vertical handover decision
    (2015-01-19)

    ;
    Recently, heterogeneous wireless networks have been integrated to provide mobile users to access services without restriction of different access networks, e.g., cellular systems and WLANs. Thus, the mobile users can obtain the services with higher data rate and quality in anywhere and at any time seamlessly. To support such scenario, it requires a vertical handover (VHO) mechanism that can decide to select the best connection among different access networks from various factors. An analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is one of the methods used in VHO decision by finding the optimal solution based on multiple attribute approach. However, there is a validity acceptance limitation of AHP, due to the score and weight of attributes, or network factors, are assigned by decision makers. This article proposes the VHO decision mechanism that improves a scoring method of AHP by deploying a linear programming (LP) technique instead of human knowledge. The LP is used to find the optimized values among various network factors. Then, the optimized values are taken to replace the human score in the AHP for VHO decision. The received signal strength (RSS), data rate, and throughput are used as the attributes, or variables, related to network factors. The experiment is conducted by simulation to verify the result of proposed VHO decision mechanism between a cellular network and WLANs. The simulation result expresses that the LP can provide the optimized network factors used for scoring in the AHP. It could also be implied that the proposed VHO decision mechanism yields the best network connection based on the optimized values obtained from the LP used instead of human knowledge.
