    The effectiveness of star anise nanoemulsion and chemical insecticide for controlling of beet armyworm

    The effectiveness of star anise (Illicium verum) nanoemulsion and deltamethrin (chemical insecticide) was tested with beet armyworm (Spodoptera exigua) to evaluate their mortality, antifeedant, and growth inhibition effects at proper concentrations. As a result, at the obtained highest effectiveness, star anise nanoemulsion required 0.35% concentration for the maximum effectiveness with 100% mortality, antifeedant and growth inhibition effects against beet armyworm, when compared with the control (Tween20 and water), while deltamethrin exhibited a lower rate. Therefore, star anise nanoemulsion seem to be utilized as a highly effective and environmentally friendly insecticide to control beet armyworm.

    Insecticidal efficiency of plant essential oil nanoemulsion formulas against Spodoptera exigua

    The findings revealed that the nEO formula of I. verum and C. longa demonstrated optimal effectiveness, with a concentration of 0.35% resulting in the highest mortality rate of 43.3%, 100% antifeedant effect and 85.0% growth inhibition activities in pupae. Additionally, a concentration of 0.25% led to 100% growth inhibition activities in adults. Consequently, the nEO formulas of I. verum and C. longa promise for the future development of botanical insecticides targeting the control of S. exigua.

    Effectiveness of plant essential oils derived from Curcuma longa, Illicium verum, Ocimum tenuiflorum, and Foeniculum vulgare for controlling common cutworm (Spodoptera litura)

    Four essential oils of Curcuma longa, Illicium verum, Ocimum tenuiflorum and Foeniculum vulgare were selected for insecticidal activity against the tobacco cutworm, Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) by using leaf dipping bioassay. Toxicity on second instar larvae was assessed after 24 hours of exposure. The result revealed that all the four essential oils effectively killed the larvae and showed high antifeedant activity. The highest killing amount for controlling the larvae and highest anti-feedant effect were observed in the essential oils of Curcuma longa and Illicium verum 0.75% concentration causing 100% mortality after 24 hours. These oils also presented the highest anti-feedant effect for controlling the larvae at 0.25% concentration. It seems that, plant essential oils derived from Curcuma longa and Illicium verum have an ability to be used as herbicide for controlling Spodoptera litura.
