Item type:Publication, PMMA particles coated with chitosan-silver nanoparticles as a dual antibacterial modifier for natural rubber latex films(2019-02-01); ;Wongpreecha, Jitrada ;Polpanich, Duangporn ;Jangpatarapongsa, KulachartKaewsaneha, ChariyaThe antibacterial activity in sulphur prevulcanized natural rubber (SPNR) latex film was effectively improved by deposition of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles encircled with chitosan-coated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs-CS). With the focus on a green process, CS was selected as a safe reducing and stabilizing agent for the one-step synthesis of AgNPs-CS (38 nm, +40.4 mV) in an autoclave. The adsorption of small-sized AgNPs-CS directly onto rubber film did not provide an inhibitory effect on S. aureus. It also had a low antibacterial effect on E. coli. This is because of the particles becoming completely/partially submerged into the soft rubber matrix upon drying. Hence, the AgNPs-CS were fabricated as a shell surrounding a rigid PMMA core (496 nm, -30.9 mV). This was done using a heterocoagulation technique prior to coating on SPNR film. The presence of PMMA/AgNPs-CS on the surface of SPNR film effectively increased the surface roughness from ca. 44 to 150 nm. This substantially promoted the antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus by way of contact killing and repelling mechanisms. The cytotoxicity on L-929 fibroblasts was also suppressed. This study would be, therefore, applicable to the development of antibacterial SPNR film with high surface roughness, low cytotoxicity. It could also be applied for other soft substrates. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Amino acid as a biodegradation accelerator of mesoporous silica nanoparticles(2019-07-01) ;Ratirotjanakul, Waranya; ;Polpanich, DuangpornTangboriboonrat, PramuanIn order to avoid cumulative toxicity of the remained mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) in biological systems, three amino acids (aâs), i.e., glycine (Gly), aspartic acid (Asp) and cysteine (Cys), were incorporated into MSNs for accelerating their biodegradation. Aâ was conjugated with 3-isocyanatopropyl triethoxysilane (ICPTES) before reacting with tetraethyl orthosilicate to form aâ-MSNs via the sol-gel process based co-condensation. FTIR spectra confirmed the urea bond formation in aâ-ICPTES, whereas silicon resonances of T2 and T3 in 29Si NMR spectrum indicated the incorporation of aâ in MSNs. Spherical bare-MSNs (112 nm) were obtained while the rod-like particles were formed in the case of Gly-MSNs (73 nm in length), Asp-MSNs (90 nm in length), and Cys-MSNs (163 nm in length). The trend of %Si dissolution rate analyzed from microwave plasma-atomic emission spectrometer (MP-AES) of aâ-MSNs in phosphate buffer saline (PBS)/trypsin enzyme (pH 7.4) was 3–5 times higher than in PBS (pH 7.4) and 7–8 times higher than in acetate buffer (pH 5.2), respectively. The Asp-MSNs having two carboxylic groups showed the highest degradability, followed by Cys-MSNs, Gly-MSNs, and bare-MSNs in all three media. By capability of aâ as a dissolution promoter, the aâ-MSNs would be an effective and alternative material used as drug carrier in biomedical applications. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Effect of Morphology of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles on Photocatalytic Activity(2019-10-25) ;Thiwakornkitkul, NaphatDispersing nanoparticles into the matrix is a simple but effective method to improve properties of coating layer. Titanium dioxide (TiO<inf>2</inf>), known for its photocatalytic activity (PCA) to degrade organic substances and to protect microbial infection, is considered to be potential candidate. However, intense light is required to achieve high PCA. Scattering layer composing of hollow TiO<inf>2</inf> nanoparticles, known as light harvester in solar cell devices, may be suitable for photocatalysis at lower light intensity. In this work, we studied the effect of hollow morphology to the PCA of TiO<inf>2</inf> nanoparticles. Hollow TiO<inf>2</inf> nanoparticles were successfully synthesized using hard-template-assisted sol-gel method. Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) images show hollow TiO<inf>2</inf> nanoparticles possessing 125-nm hollow core and 50-nm TiO<inf>2</inf> shell. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) results revealed no crystalline peak for both calcined and non-calcined samples, but difference for each sample was reported by Ultraviolet-Visible Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (UV-DRS). UV-DRS spectrum showed the higher diffuse reflectance for both hollow TiO<inf>2</inf> samples than the dense counterpart, suggesting multiple light scattering and high reflection. However, energy bandgaps of amorphous and calcined hollow TiO<inf>2</inf> samples are higher than dense counterparts. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Highly fluorescent sub 40-nm aminated mesoporous silica nanoparticles(2015-04-01); ;Ma, Kai ;Drews, Jennifer E. ;Werner-Zwanziger, UlrikeZwanziger, JosefWe report the room temperature synthesis of highly fluorescent, sub-40 nm aminated mesoporous silica nanoparticles in water using triethanolamine (TEA) as catalyst. Co-condensation reactions between silica precursors, i.e., tetraethoxysilane and 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane, allows the incorporation of amino moieties and conjugated fluorescent dye (tetramethylrhodamine-5(6)-isothiocyanate; TRITC) throughout the silica matrix. Resulting materials are characterized using a combination of transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen sorption measurements, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential measurements, thermogravimetric analysis, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy and solid-state 29Si-NMR spectroscopy. The TEA-catalyzed system leads to the formation of bright and discrete sub-40 nm aminated mesoporous silica nanoparticles with disordered pore structure and high organic content. Resulting nanomaterials may find use as simultaneous fluorescent probes and drug delivery vehicles in future theranostic applications. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, One-pot, large-scale green synthesis of silver nanoparticles-chitosan with enhanced antibacterial activity and low cytotoxicity(2018-11-01) ;Wongpreecha, Jitrada ;Polpanich, Duangporn; ;Kaewsaneha, ChariyaTangboriboonrat, PramuanSilver nanoparticles stabilized with chitosan (AgNPs-CS) were synthesized based on the one-pot green process in an autoclave, in which CS acts as reducing agent as well as stabilizer. Effects related to temperature and pressure input on particle formation were systematically investigated. Mechanism taking place during particle nucleation and growth was proposed. The data from UV–vis absorption, X-ray diffraction pattern and morphology confirmed the formation of AgNPs-CS with face-centered cubic (fcc) structure. The synthesized AgNPs-CS showed the effective antibacterial activity against both E. coli and S. aureus. The minimum bactericidal concentration values of 39.1 and 312.5 μg/ml for E. coli and S. aureus, respectively, did not show cytotoxicity to L-929 fibroblast. Moreover, the covering of CS on the surface of AgNPs-CS was proven to reduce the cytotoxicity when compared with commercial citrate-stabilized AgNPs. Considering simple and mild process, this synthesis approach would be helpful for development of benign AgNPs-based antibacterial agent. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Green synthesis of AgNPs coated mesoporous silica nanoparticles using tyrosine as reducing/stabilising agent(2018-01-01) ;Ratirotjanakul, Waranya ;Sioloetwong, Tanapon; Tangboriboonrat, PramuanA novel, simple and environmental friendly approach to fabricate silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) using tyrosine (Tyr) as biological reducing agent was developed. The functionalization of Tyr with MSNs (Tyr-MSNs) (150 nm in length) by the sol-gel process was confirmed by the characteristic peaks of amino, carboxyl and silanol groups appeared in FTIR spectrum and the change of the zeta potential from 0 mV at pH 2 to -60 mV at pH 12. Then, AgNPs were formed on the surface of Tyr-MSNs (Tyr-MSN@AgNPs) via only reducibility from phenolic group of Tyr and catalytic activity from base at room temperature. TEM images and UV-Visible absorption band at 420 nm supported the obtained AgNPs (18 nm at pH 11) were tightly bound to Tyr-MSNs even after centrifugation at high speed. These Tyr-MSN@AgNPs would be potentially used as drug carrier in biomedical applications. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, One-pot synthesis of organic-inorganic hybrid hollow latex particles via Pickering and seeded emulsion polymerizations(2015-04-01) ;Narongthong, Jirawat ;Nuasaen, Sukanya; Tangboriboonrat, PramuanHybrid hollow latex (HL) particles possessing poly(styrene-co-acrylic acid) (P(St/AA)) as the inner shell, poly(divinyl benzene) (PDVB) as the outer shell, and silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) as the stabilizer were conveniently prepared via the combined Pickering and seeded emulsion polymerizations. P(St/AA) particles (435 nm) were used as seeds, DVB as a swollen and crosslink monomer, 2,2′-azobis(2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride as initiator, and SiNPs as Pickering stabilizer. Without core removal, solvent evaporation, and surface modification steps, the spherical, monodisperse, and non-collapsed HL-SiNPs particles (722 nm) with double shell polymer layer and a large void cavity (400 nm) were obtained. The presence of large cavity and double shell may enable these hybrid HL-SiNPs particles to be used as lightweight filler and/or white pigment in coatings. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Hollow core-shell particles via NR latex seeded emulsion polymerization(2016-09-02) ;Wichaita, Waraporn ;Polpanich, Duangporn; Tangboriboonrat, PramuanNatural rubber (NR)-based hollow latex (HL) particles have been prepared by seeded emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate/divinyl benzene/acrylic acid (MMA/DVB/AA) monomers on NR seed. By using tert-butyl hydroperoxide/tetraethylene pentamine (t-BuHP/TEPA) as a redox initiator, the locus of polymerization was localized at the surface of the NR particle. After swelling with monomers, DVB in NR particle gradually moved outward to compensate the co-polymerization. Phase separation between the NR seed and the polymeric shell occurred and a void was subsequently formed at a MMA/DVB molar ratio of 2.7/1. The void cavity was enlarged when the monomer to seed (M/S) weight ratio was increased to 4/1. Without the necessity of any residual core removal, polydisperse NR-based hollow nanocomposites (298 ± 58 nm) possessing NR-P(MMA/DVB/AA) double-layered shell and a single void (155 ± 37 nm) were obtained. SEM images revealed an increase in surface roughness of the HL particle with increasing M/S weight ratios. The large specific surface area of these NR-based hollow nanocomposites (114.6 m2/g) with a 3.5 nm pore diameter indicates that the polymeric shell is mesoporous. The presence of carboxyl groups, as indicated by negative zeta potentials, can further facilitate surface functionalization. The large void cavity of these NR-based HL particles makes them particularly suited as delivery vehicle systems. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Enhanced antibacterial activity of NR latex gloves with raspberry-like PMMA-N,N,N-trimethyl chitosan particles(2015-11-01) ;Arpornwichanop, Thanida ;Polpanich, Duangporn ;Thiramanas, Raweewan; Tangboriboonrat, PramuanRaspberry-like poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) latex particles stabilized with silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) were prepared via the Pickering emulsion polymerization for use as substrate of N,N,N-trimethyl chitosan (TMC) adsorption. With the aims to simultaneously reduce the surface friction and improve the antibacterial activity of rubber gloves, the synthesized PMMA-SiNPs(TMC) particles were electrostatically deposited onto a sulphur prevulcanized natural rubber (SPNR) latex film. From SEM and AFM analyses, the results showed the highest surface coverage of PMMA-SiNPs(TMC) particles on the surface of SPNR film of 41% and the surface roughness of 69. nm. The coated SPNR film exhibited effective antibacterial activity especially against S. aureus. Therefore, this investigation would be useful for fabrication of special gloves with antibacterial properties.1
