Item type:Publication, Potential antioxidant and lipid peroxidation inhibition of Phyllanthus acidus leaf extract in minced pork(2017-09-01) ;Nguyen, Tuyen Thi Kim; ; Objective: This study investigated the effect of extraction solvents on antioxidant bio-active compounds as well as potential antioxidant and lipid peroxidation inhibition of Phyllanthus acidus (P. acidus) leaf extract in minced pork. Methods: The effect of various solvent systems of water, 25%, 50%, 75% (v/v) ethanol in water and absolute ethanol on the extraction crude yield, total phenolic content, total flavonoid content and in vitro antioxidant activities of P. acidus leaves was determined. In addition, antioxidant activities of the addition of crude extract from P. aciuds leaves at 2.5 and 5 g/kg in minced pork on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, 2,2'-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) radical cation decolorization, reducing power and inhibition of lipid peroxidation (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances; TBARS) were determined. Moreover, sensory evaluation of the samples was undertaken by using a 7-point hedonic scale. Results: The results showed that the highest crude yield (2.8 g/100 g dry weight) was obtained from water which also had the highest recovery yield for total phenolic content, total flavonoid content and the strongest antioxidant activity. The addition of crude water extract from P. acidus leaves was more effective in retarding lipid peroxidation and higher antioxidant activity than control and butylated hydroxytoluene in minced pork. In particular, the samples containing P. acidus extract had no significant effect on the sensory scores of overall appearance, color, odor, texture, flavor, and overall acceptability compared to the control. Conclusion: Water solvent was an optimally appropriate solvent for P. acidus leaf extraction because of its ability to yield the highest amount of bio-active compounds and in vitro antioxidant property. Particularly, P. acidus crude water extract also strongly expressed the capacity to retard lipid oxidation, radical scavenging, radical cation decolorization and reducing power in minced pork. Item type:Publication, Effects of natural herbicide from tagetes erecta on echinochloa crus-galli (L.) beauv(2018-01-01) ;Wichittrakarn, P.; ; We studied the inhibitory effects of leaves extracts of Tagetes erecta on weed-seed germination and the mechanisms involved. Hydroethanolic crude extract (OR) from Tagetes erecta dried leaves was partitioned into four fractions: hydrolyzed (HY), aqueous (AQ), neutral (NE) and acidic (AE). The inhibitory effects of crude extracts and its fractions were evaluated on germination and seedlings growth of Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents of each fraction were also determined. Germination and seedling growth were drastically inhibited by HY and AE followed by NE, OR and AQ. The HY and AE fractions had higher concentrations of both phenolics and flavonoids than other fractions. The HY fraction was selected as most potent for development as natural herbicide due to its high yield and strong inhibitory effects. The HY fraction was formulated into a soluble concentrate product (SCT) and its inhibition potential and modes of action were investigated. The SCT drastically inhibited the seed germination of E. crus-galli, inhibiting both imbibition, α-amylase activity and also seedling growth. Cytogenetic bioassays of SCT on root-tip cells of Allium cepa L. showed that it inhibited the mitosis and thereby the cell division. It is likely that a natural herbicide may be developed from the hydrolyzed fraction of a hydroethanolic extract of Mexican marigold leaves. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Potential allelopathic effects of Suregada multiflorum and the influence of soil type on its residue's efficacy(2010-09-01); ;Boonleom, Chaninat; ;Thitavasanta, SompopThis experiment was conducted to determine the potential allelopathic effects of the aqueous extracts and dried leaf powder of Suregada multiflorum and to find the herbicidal effects of its granule on the weed species, barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli) and slender amaranth (Amaranthus viridis), in various growth media (germination paper, sand, and soil). Observations in this study demonstrated that the potential and magnitude of their inhibitory effects varied among the plant parts. The leaves and branches possessed the strongest inhibition levels, followed by the bark. The aqueous extract from the leaves of S. multiflorum had a remarkably stronger inhibitory effect on the germination and growth of slender amaranth, compared with barnyardgrass; when applied at the concentration of 100-g-L<sup>-1</sup>, it completely inhibited the germination and initial seedling growth of slender amaranth. In addition, all the treatments of the dried leaf powder had stronger inhibition effects than the aqueous extract. Interestingly, the inhibitory effects of the dried leaf granule of S. multiflorum were stronger than the effects of the dried leaf powder at equal rates. The degree of inhibitory effect of the S. multiflorum granule, applied in various growing media, can be classified in order of decreasing inhibition as germination paper = sand > clay soil. The present study indicates that the S. multiflorum granule product that was developed in this research has the potential to provide a powerful organic herbicide for controlling slender amaranth. © 2010 The Authors. Item type:Publication, Chemical composition and herbicidal action of essential oil from Tagetes erecta L. leaves(2018-12-15); ;Wichittrakarn, PattharinPlant derived substances, particularly essential oils have been an increasing interest in their safe and environmentally-friendly application to crops, as a powerful alternative to chemical herbicides. The present investigation studied the chemical composition of the essential oil extracted from Tagetes erecta L. and evaluated its herbicidal activities (pre-and post-emergence) against Echinochloa cruss-galli (L.) Beauv. The yield of essential oil from T. erecta was 0.72 mg.kg<sup>−1</sup> fresh weight. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was employed to determine essential oil chemical composition. Relatively high amounts of monoterpines were detected, consisting mainly of piperitone (17.12%), piperitenone (10.46), and ocimine (8.59%); identified sesquiterpenoids consisted mainly of neophytadiene (16.18%) and caryophyllene (11.10%). The essential oil was formulated as emulsifiable concentrate (EC-EO) for herbicidal applications. Seed germination and seedling growth of E. crus-galli was determined by Petri dish bioassay for EC-EO concentrations ranging from 0.25 to 2 mL.L<sup>−1</sup>. At 2 mL.L<sup>−1</sup>, the EC-EO completely inhibited germination and growth of E. crus-galli seed due to the inhibition of α-amylase activity. Post-emergence application of EC-EOs was also tested, with concentrations of 10 to 80 mL.L<sup>−1</sup> foliar applied to 21-day-old E. crus-galli plants. The leaves of treated plants appeared wilted and desiccated. Increasing concentrations of oil decreased chlorophyll a, b, and carotenoid content, indicating that the EC-EO interferes with photosynthetic metabolism. The EC-EOs also caused loss of membrane integrity and increase of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances. Taken together, these results indicate that the T. erecta essential oil has phytotoxic compounds that could be utilized as natural herbicides for future weed control. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Upland rice vinegar vapor inhibits spore germination, hyphal growth and aflatoxin formation in Aspergillus flavus on maize grains(2017-01-01); ; ; ;Pandee, PatcharapornThe efficacy of vapor-phase (VP) upland rice vinegar (URV) was investigated as a bio-fumigant for maize, to reduce consumer health risks associated with spore and toxin formation by Aspergillus flavus. Complete reduction of mycelial growth occurred with in vitro VP exposure to URV (containing 0.0017 mmol/L acetic acid) or with VP exposure to pure acetic acid (PAA) (containing 0.0023 mmol/L acetic acid). No significant differences were observed between the two materials after 90 min exposures. Using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), URV vapor was shown to contain volatiles having antifungal activities. These are identified as isoamylalcohol, 1-butanol, 3-methyl-, acetate and β-phenylethyl acetate. It is suggested these volatiles increase the antifungal effectiveness of URV. Exposure to VP-URV (containing 0.0043 mmol/L AA) for 5 h completely eliminated viable spores of A. flavus on maize seeds (23% moisture content) previously inoculated with 4.43 ± 0.28 log spores/g). At the same time, aflatoxin production decreased, as VP-URV exposure increased. Hence, VP-URV is shown to be an effective control agent for A. flavus mycelial growth and aflatoxin formation on maize, so effectively reducing the potential for consumer health risks due to this widespread fungus. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Essential oil from ginger as a novel agent in delaying senescence of cut fronds of the fern (Davallia solida (G. Forst.) Sw.)(2019-10-01); Rabbit's foot fern (Davallia solida (G. Forst.) Sw.) is traded as cut floral greens and commonly used in orchid flower arrangements and bouquets; however, its use is limited by its relatively rapid postharvest yellowing and desiccation. This study was designed to investigate the chemical profile of the essential oil from ginger rhizome (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) and to determine the oil's effectiveness in extending the postharvest quality of rabbit's foot fern. Essential oil was extracted from ginger rhizomes by hydrodistillation. The percentage composition of major identified compounds was citral (29.91%), zingiberene (13.3%), α-farnesene (11.68%), 1,8-cineole (10.60%), and β-sesquiphellandrene (6.14%). The ginger essential oil was applied in emulsion form to rabbit's foot fern fronds as a pulse (25, 50, or 100 mg L<sup>−1</sup>) or a holding solution (5, 10 and 20 mg L<sup>−1</sup>). Pulse treatments were applied for 6 h before the fronds were transferred into a holding solution containing either distilled water or essential oil of ginger. Control fronds received distilled water as both pulsing and holding solutions. Rabbit's foot fern pulsed with 25 mg L<sup>−1</sup> essential oil and transferred into a holding solution with 5 mg L<sup>−1</sup> essential oil increased frond longevity by 4.9 days and helped maintain both water uptake and visual quality. Under this treatment, fronds exhibited higher chlorophyll a and b contents, lower malondialdehyde content, and delayed loss of radical scavenging ability compared to control. Together, these results indicate that when dosed appropriately in pulsing and holding solutions, essential oil of ginger prolongs the vase life of fronds; it also enhances postharvest quality by simultaneously retarding the degradation of chlorophyll a and b, preserving DPPH scavenging activity, and lowering malondialdehyde accumulation. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Retarding Changes of Postharvest Qualities of Sweet Basil (Ocimum basilicum Linn.) by Vapor-Phase Vinegar(2017-10-02) ;Changsawake, Kanokporn ;Krusong, Warawut; Fresh leaves of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) were exposed to ambient upland rice vinegar (URV) vapor containing 4% acetic acid (AA) for 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, or 10 min, before packing in polyethylene bags and storing at 12°C. This extended the postharvest storage life of sweet basil by retaining greenness, freshness, and antioxidants. Item type:Publication, Evaluation of allelopathic, decomposition and cytogenetic activities of Jasminum officinale L. f. var. grandiflorum (L.) Kob. on bioassay plants(2010-07-01); ; Methanolic extracts prepared from dried leaves of Jasminum officinale f. var. grandiflorum (L.) Kob. (Spanish jasmine) inhibited seed germination and stunted both root and shoot length of the weeds Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv. and Phaseolus lathyroides L. The main active compound was isolated and determined by spectral data as a secoiridoid glucoside named oleuropein. In addition, a decrease in allelopathic efficacy appeared as the decomposition periods increased. The mitotic index in treated onion root tips decreased with increasing concentrations of the extracts and longer periods of treatment. Likewise, the mitotic phase index was altered in onion incubated with crude extract. Furthermore, crude extract produced mitotic abnormalities resulting from its action on chromatin organization and mitotic spindle. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Item type:Publication, Susceptibility of Klebsiella pneumoniae on coriander leaves to liquid- and vapor-phase ethanol(2016-04-03) ;Krusong, Warawut ;Pornpukdeewatana, SoisudaThe bio-control of ethanol on Klebsiella pneumoniae on fresh coriander leaves for significantly reducing consumer health risk was investigated. Washed and sterilized leaves of coriander were inoculated with K. pneumoniae cultured in Trypticase Soy broth. Susceptibility of the K. pneumoniae to liquid- and evaporated vapor-phase ethanol (EVE) was then examined in vitro. Complete inhibition of K. pneumoniae was found with 18% (v/v) liquid ethanol. Exposure for 15 min to EVE (9.00 ± 0.8 mmol L<sup>-1</sup>) completely destroyed K. pneumoniae (4.04 ± 0.02 log CFU/ml) spread on Mueller Hilton agar at 30 ± 2°C. The effect of EVE with and without evaporated water vapor (EWV) on the susceptibility of K. pneumoniae on fresh coriander leaves was examined. While exposure to EVE affected the survival of K. pneumoniae, the degree of reduction depended on both the inoculation level and the EWV. Complete reduction of K. pneumoniae was achieved for the low inoculation level by EVE alone (37 ± 2% relative humidity; RH) but susceptibility was reduced with EWV (high RH; 80 ± 2%). Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of inoculated coriander leaves confirm the effects of EVE in reducing levels of K. pneumoniae. Item type:Publication, Comparison of antioxidant properties in different herbal fresh sausages(2018-12-01) ;Jaisut, N.; ;Ngamyeesoon, N.The antioxidant properties of different herbal fresh sausages was evaluated. Sensory evaluation of five herbal adding to fresh sausage recipes No.1 - No.5 were examined. Two highest overall acceptability scores of sausages were selected and subsequently studied on antioxidant properties by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, 2,2′-Azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) radical cation decolorization and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) methods. The results showed that the most favorite of cooked herbal fresh sausages recipes were No.2 and No.5. Therefore, two of these recipes were further studied for antioxidant properties. The DPPH and ABTS of sausage No.5 was higher than sausage No.2 and sausage contained 0.01% butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) (P<0.05). However, TBARS of sausage recipes No.2 and No.5 were higher than 0.01% BHT (P<0.05) which indicated that sausage recipes No.2 and No.5 was more rancid than the recipe with 0.01% BHT. This finding displayed the beneficial herbal fresh sausages as healthy food.
