Process development and its characteristics of barium titanate/epoxy resin nanocomposites

Abstract
In this work, the barium titanate/epoxy resin nanocomposites were prepared by the conventional casting method with various ratios. The physical properties, microstructure and electrical properties such as dielectric constant, dielectric loss and dielectric breakdown strength were investigated for all samples. The polarization hysteresis loops were also investigated in order to calculate the energy density of materials. From the results, it was found that the electrical properties changed with barium titanate content and strongly depended on porosity and the distribution of barium titanate nanoparticles. Moreover, optimum composition was selected to improve the distribution of barium titanate nanoparticles by using refluxed technique and dispersant (Span80). It was found that the distribution of refluxed particles showed a better microstructure and less agglomeration since the particle surface was surrounded by hydroxyl group (-OH). This made barium titanate more dispersible in epoxy resin matrix and the agglomeration was clearly reduced. As a result, the developed nanocomposites tended to have higher dielectric loss, breakdown strength and energy density.
