Abstract
In this work, the cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy was fabricated via conventional powder metallurgy method followed by sintering in an argon atmosphere. The Co-Cr pellets were formed by uniaxial pressing combined with cold isostatic pressing, aiming for high packing density. Microstructure, chemical compositions and surface morphologies of all samples were investigated via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively. The biocompatibility of the Co-Cr alloys was investigated by immersing in simulated body fluid (SBF) for different times. The releasing ions were then examined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). All the results point out that all properties strongly depend on microstructure and densification of these alloys. Furthermore, the appropriated condition for thermal treatment is performed to Co-Cr alloys in order to study the effect of thermal treatment on related properties. After thermal treatment process at 1200°C for 2 hours, it is found that the amount of pores in samples decreases due to thermal grain growth. For the biocompatibility, the results show that Co amount increases with increasing immersed days whereas Cr amount decreases. For thermal-treated samples, Co and Cr amounts are released to SBF higher than non-thermal-treated samples. The thermal treatment process allows Co-Cr alloys to have higher ductility and lower hardness, releasing a higher concentration of metal ions
