Investigation into nuisance tripping of steam turbine generator due to increase of shaft vibration amplitudes

Abstract
This article proposes an experimental investigation into the nuisance tripping of large steam turbine generator with the capacity of 700 MW at a thermal power plant, Thailand. Increase of shaft vibration amplitudes was responsible for interested nuisance tripping. A cause of increasing amplitudes of shaft vibration signals sensed by displacement sensors was observed. Records of nuisance alarms and trips were analyzed and found to be caused by using trunked portable radio in transmission mode at the planton field. In this investigation, the experiment was conducted with three different radio frequencies and with ten different distances between the probe and the radio in the laboratory. Measured results were also analyzed by using the analysis of variance (ANOVA) to confirm the negative impact of utilizing trunked portable radio in transmission mode on displacement vibration measurement. In addition, an approach to mitigating the nuisance trips of steam turbine generator due to electromagnetic interference is suggested.
