Abstract

This chapter describes the measurement of partial discharges (PDs) with decoupling, acquisition, processing, and pattern classification. For measuring of PDs, it is necessary to decouple the PD signal from the high voltage testing circuit. The PD signals for several application are quite small in comparison to the noise signals, which lead to a full overlap and misleading result interpretation afterwards. For this reason, based of an overview of selected noise sources several de-noising methods are discussed. The chapter provides a short review of the state-of-knowledge in artificial intelligence methods as well as discussion of expert systems under the aspects whether a successful application of such methods in PD diagnosis might be expected in near future. Calibration must be carried out in the completed PD test circuit, including the test object, but with the high-voltage source turned off.
