Recognizing the significance of alternate wetting and drying technology in sustainable agriculture, this study aims to promote the adoption of this technology among both Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and non-GAP farmers in Suburban, Bangkok, Thailand. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire, which gathered information on farmers' cost and return values, as well as their adoption opinions. The collected data were then analyzed using cost and return analysis, as well as stochastic frontier analysis. The results indicate that non-GAP farmers face significantly higher total costs due to increased fixed costs compared to GAP farmers. While there were no significant differences in yield between the two groups, GAP farmers achieved significantly higher total income and net profit due to lower total costs and higher selling prices. Furthermore, the analysis suggests that both groups of rice farmers have the potential to improve their efficiency levels, with non-GAP farmers showing a higher potential for improvement. In terms of adoption opinion, both farmer groups recognize the advantages of wet and dry farming technology over traditional flooded rice farming. This study highlights that the adoption levels of both GAP and non-GAP farmers can be significantly improved through the implementation of best management practices. Overall, the findings emphasize the importance of trustworthy information dissemination to encourage the adoption of wet and dry farming technology, as it enhances farmers' trust in the received information and their engagement with the technology. The study concludes by providing policy implications and recommendations to promote the wider adoption of wet and dry farming technology. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Strategic guidelines for community enterprise development: a case in rural Thailand(2023-03-08) ;Cavite, Harry Jay M. ;Kerdsriserm, ChanhathaiSuwanmaneepong, SuneepornPurpose: In spite of the government’s support for small-scale rice farmers in rural areas of Thailand, several problems still affect their production and marketing performance. This study aims to assess a rice production community enterprise (RPCE) through an in-depth investigation of its problems and capabilities; and formulate internal strategic guidelines for enterprise development. Design/methodology/approach: This study used a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews with the community enterprise leader and committee members, and focus group discussion with eight farmer-members, purposively selected in Chachoengsao, Thailand. Data were transcribed, sorted and organised to determine themes and patterns. Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) and threats, opportunities, weaknesses and strengths (TOWS) matrix situational analyses were done to develop strategic options. Strategic guidelines were formulated through a final deliberation with all members to ensure strategies aligned with the enterprise’s goals and objectives. Findings: The results have identified three main problem categories encountered by the community enterprise in the areas of membership and labour; production and milling operations; and product design and marketing. The enterprise’s main strengths and opportunities include its product certifications and support from external organisations. Strategic points were developed, and policy support programmes are recommended for capacity building and product development as most problems identified relate to these aspects. Originality/value: The utility of this study is its focus on an RPCE. The findings will help policymakers and concerned government agencies implement better programmes and policies to develop RPCEs. Furthermore, this study will be a source for future qualitative literature that will provide helpful information to other studies aiming to develop other types of community enterprises (CEs). - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Biochemical characteristics and inoculation effects of multi-trait plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria on upland rice (Oryza sativa L. cv PSB Rc23) seedling growth(2021-08-01) ;Cavite, Harry Jay M. ;Mactal, Ariel G. ;Evangelista, Editha V.Cruz, Jayvee A.Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are known to stimulate plant growth because of their versatility in nutrient transformation. However, the success of PGPR inoculation depends not only on their ability to promote plant growth but also on their capacity to metabolize substrates that can be used as energy for the development and survival of the crops. Given the important influence of seed germination and vigor on crop yield, this study investigated the biochemical characteristics and effectiveness of multi-trait PGPR isolates in enhancing upland rice seedling growth and vigor. Biochemical identification was done using Biolog GEN III Microbial Identification System. Isolates were characterized based on their ability to metabolize all major classes of biochemicals in the carbon source utilization and chemical sensitivity assays. Identified rhizobacterial isolates were tested in vitro to evaluate their inoculation effects on the growth of PSB Rc23 upland rice seedlings. Biochemical identification results showed that rhizobacterial isolates have extensive metabolic activities in a wide range of carbon sources. Inoculation effects revealed that isolate IBBw<inf>1a</inf> was the most effective in enhancing root length and vigor index of rice seedlings in vitro, yielding a significant increase of 60% and 53%, respectively, over the uninoculated control. This study suggests that rhizobacterial isolates from upland rice may have commercial significance to improve seedling growth and vigor. These isolates will undergo a further assessment of their effectiveness in actual upland rice field conditions as they were already proven effective growth promoters in laboratory and screenhouse conditions. Such future activity can uncover their efficacy as potential biofertilizers in the actual soil environment. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Growth and Yield Response of Upland Rice to Application of Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria(2021-04-01) ;Cavite, Harry Jay M. ;Mactal, Ariel G. ;Evangelista, Editha V.Cruz, Jayvee A.This study evaluated the effects of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) isolates in enhancing upland rice growth and yield. Bacteria were isolated, screened for growth-promoting activities in vitro, biochemically identified, and tested under screenhouse conditions at the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice). Isolates exhibited growth-promoting activities, such as indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) production, tricalcium phosphate solubilization, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) deaminase activity, siderophore production, and starch hydrolysis. The screenhouse experiment was conducted with upland rice (PSB Rc23) as the test crop, sterilized and natural soils, and recommended rate of inorganic fertilizers (RRIF) as other source variables. Results showed that significantly heavier shoot and root fresh weights are evident in plants grown in sterilized soil. Plants treated with full RRIF exhibited superior growth in terms of plant height, shoot and root weights, and grain yield. Among inoculated and fertilized plants, comparable growth promotion was obtained with Acidovorax delafieldii combined with half inorganic fertilizer rate, in terms of root fresh weight, shoot and root dry weights, plant height, grain yield, and nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK) uptake. Overall findings show that PGPR (A. delafieldii) in combination with 50% RRIF is as effective as full RRIF in enhancing growth and yield of PSB Rc23 rice, implying that dependence on chemical fertilizer can be reduced utilizing this PGPR. However, further evaluation of these bacterial isolates in actual field conditions is necessary to uncover their efficiency as potential biofertilizer.
