This article focuses on a digital fieldbus replacement for existing analog communications to bring automation infrastructure for operational excellence. Economic analysis between conventional and Foundation Fieldbus systems for new instrumentation and control installations in a raw cane sugar production is described as an illustrative case study. Surpassing the traditional analog system during project implementation, the digital fieldbus provides saving in material, installation, and commissioning costs. The studied case can be applied as a useful tool that can support planning and decision making for any small or large upcoming projects. © 2013 ICIC International.

An availability of valuable physical layer diagnostic information in maintenance practice is presented in this article. Establishing an effective and efficient maintenance capability for Foundation Fieldbus segments installed at the Tail Gas Treating Unit, IRPC Public Company Limited, Thailand is described as an illustrative case study. Diagnostic-driven maintenance strategy not only reduces fixed and variable maintenance costs but also extends useful asset life by reducing the interval between maintenance events, reducing the cost of failures, and making it easier to plan maintenance and service work. © 2013 ICIC International.

In this article, a technique to obtain fast loop controls using Foundation Fieldbus-based control in the field strategy is presented. Macrocycle schedules for running a single control loop and running two control loops on a segment are examined. Performances of the proposed technique were studied through calculated macrocycle timing schedules produced by the DeltaV and CentumVP systems. Surpassing the traditional Distributed Control System (DCS) approach with control in the host, the proposed technique offers significant improvement in segment schedules with minimizing network scheduled communications. © 2013 ICIC International.

This paper focuses on implementing cascade control in the field using Foundation Fieldbus technology. The key consideration is the assignment of master and slave PID block locations in Fieldbus devices for minimizing network traffic without negative impact on an ability to control the process. A plant model using multi-vendor Fieldbus devices for level-to-flow cascade control is described as an illustrative case study. This paper examines calculated macrocycle timing schedules produced by the DeltaV system for six possible field control locations of the PID blocks. Experimental results obtained from the preferred field control location with minimum number of scheduled data transmissions over the network are also included. © 2012 SICE.
