    Effects of Marketing Mix Factors on Customer’s Decision to Purchase Community-Made Fermented Soil: A Survey in the Eastern Peri-Urban Area of Bangkok, Thailand

    This study investigates the marketing mix factors affecting customers’ decision to purchase community-made fermented soil (CMFS). Data were collected in the eastern peri-urban area of Bangkok, Thailand, using survey questionnaires. A total of 202 customer respondents were chosen through purposive sampling. Two sampled groups of customers were identified, the first group (n = 53) includes customers who already purchased and used CMFS, while the second group (n = 149) includes those who intend to use CMFS in the future. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and a binary logistic regression was employed to investigate the marketing mix factors affecting customers’ purchasing decisions. Customers who already purchased and used CMFS, the price factor was the most important among the marketing mix elements. While customers with future intentions to purchase CMFS, market promotion factors were the most important. The binary logistics regression results revealed that adequate nutrients for plant growth and the sales location increase the odds for customers to purchase community-made fermented soil. Moreover, a higher probability of purchase intention was observed among consumers with higher perceived health and environmental concerns. This implies the viability of CMFS as an alternative to chemical fertilizer and a viable additional income for farmers.

    Microplastics in construction and built environment

    Plastics have been extensively used in the building and construction industries for decades. However, the more plastics are utilised, the more microplastics are released. This review and analysis article summarises and organises the knowledge from 211 current related publications published in 2014–2022. The review and analysis explain the kinds of plastics employed in construction and built environment. Fabrics or textiles, fibres and plastics in cementitious systems, paints, tyres and roads are discussed. The entry points of microplastics into the human body are reviewed next, followed by the management of recycled wastes. The important research gaps and possible solutions include using high-strength concretes and surface-hardening agents is suggested to encapsulate the microplastics inside the matrix; DPSIR model analysis can be holistically adopted for each composite; innovative bio-chemical technology like self-healing concrete and bio-degradable plastics can be a viable choice; and social science, law and urban planning can support awareness and comprehension.

    The Waste Separation Game to Promote Computational Thinking Through Mixed Reality Technology

    The primary issue of garbage is its direct impact on the environment and quality of life. Several types of trash have piled up in Thailand. Many individuals don't use the correct way of waste management because they have lacked knowledge and understanding of how to sort rubbish since childhood. To increase the possibility to fully utilize the knowledge of waste separation correctly, the researcher aims to promote computational thinking through the learning of a game called 'Trashman'. This game simulates various objects for situations of sorting garbage into the appropriate sorting bin. Trashman has 3 levels in the game. Each level increases the number of bins and the amount of garbage, starting from level 1-3 which refers to easy, moderate, and difficult levels, respectively. The level indicates the error of separating the waste if putting it into a wrong bin type. The educating about different types of waste separation through the game utilizes Mixed Reality (MR) technology of the Magic Leap One device. The developer's expectation for an alternative learning medium in the form of a game is to allow players to apply their knowledge by practicing computational skills by sorting garbage correctly. The game evaluates and summarizes scores of each level at the game's end. This will evaluate player's performance of CT through their ability separating trash. Moreover, the Sustainable Development Goals can be applied for lifelong learning to follow-up and assessment in furtherance of correct trash sorting.

    Energy, economic and environmental (3E) analysis for sustainable development: A case study of a 9.9 MW biomass power plant in Thailand

    In Thailand, the use of biomass for electricity generation has been implemented with incineration technology for many years. However, recent reports indicate that electricity demand is still high and biomass power plant is one of the key factors for electricity management. The major purpose of this research paper is to analyze the energy, economic and environmental features of biomass power plant for the national sustainable development strategy. An existing 9.9 MW biomass power plant located in Suphanburi is selected as the case study to assess thermal combustion for electricity generation. The in-house operations of biomass-based power plant and the process flow of energy in terms of electricity generation using agricultural wastes and forestry residues are provided. Different expenses like capital cost, processing cost, and transportation cost and the major revenue from the sale of electricity are taken into consideration. Five environmental factors (air, sound, water, ash, and transportation) of biomass power plant for sustainability are investigated. Findings from this research project indicate that incineration is a suitable technology for biomass-based electricity generation with considerable profit for all stakeholders.

    Responses of hot pepper (Capsicum Chinense Jacq.) cultivars to different container sizes for capsaicinoid production under controlled house conditions

    This study was to investigate the effects of container size on capsaicinoid production of hot pepper (Capsicum chinense Jacq.) cultivars under controlled house conditions. This experiment was conducted in the rainy season during the period from May to October 2015 and the dry season from October 2015 to March 2016. A factorial experiment in a randomize complete block design with three replications evaluated growth traits, the capsaicinoid production and its components. Factor A was two hot pepper cultivars, and factor B was three container sizes, i.e., 8 liter (L), 15 L and 21 L. Plant growth, dry fruit yield, capsaicinoid content, and capsaicinoid yield were recorded. The growing season affected all characteristics studied. Hot peppers grown in the rainy season had higher plant growth, dry fruit yield, and capsaicinoid yield than those plants grown in the dry season. Whereas, hot pepper fruits in the dry season contained more capsaicinoid content than those in the rainy season. Capsaicinoid yield of hot pepper depended on cultivars and the container size. Akanee Pirote grown in 21 L container produced the highest dry fruit yield (192 g/plant) and capsaicinoid yield (4,287 mg plant<sup>-1</sup>) in both seasons. These results show that C. chinense F<inf>1</inf> hybrid with high pungency grown in a particular container size should be used to maximize the capsaicinoid production for food and pharmaceutical industries.

    Environmental impact factors on Thai biomass power projects: A structural equation model

    This study discusses factors, relating to the environmental impact of biomass power generation within Thailand and the broader regional ASEAN community. While there are ambitious government targets to increase the share of renewable energy in many countries, it is increasingly recognized that social acceptance may be a constraining factor in achieving this target. This study introduces three dimensions of environmental impact namely; public perception, government policy and community participation. Thailand's economic growth is in many respects determined by power generation with electricity demand moving hand-in-hand with rapidly expanding economic growth. With the doubling of Thailand's population since the 1960s, the necessity for rural electricity coverage has also increased dramatically. This, however, is at times difficult and expensive to achieve in these remote rural locations with their sparsely populated areas. However, power must be available nationwide and when areas are not appropriate for a large-scale power plant investment, smaller and less expensive local power plants are required. In these rural cases, biomass power plants can be considered as one alternative. Since, Thailand outside the main metropolitan areas is still mostly rural and agricultural, there is a ready source of raw material for biomass conversion. This study undertook the modeling and analysis of Thailand's biomass industry using both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Results showed from the hypotheses that public perception, government policy and community participation had a significant and direct contribution on the overall environmental impact of the local community.

    Thailand's economic growth is in many respects determined by power generation with the demand for electricity moving hand-in-hand with rapidly expanding economic growth. With the doubling of Thailand's population since the 1960s, the necessity for rural electricity coverage has also increased dramatically. This however is at times difficult and expensive to achieve in these remote rural locations with their sparsely populated areas. However, power must be available nationwide and when areas are not appropriate for a large-scale power plant investment, smaller and less expensive local power plants need to be chosen. In these rural cases, biomass power plants can be considered as one alternative. Since, Thailand outside the main metropolitan areas is still mostly rural and agricultural, there is a ready source of raw material for biomass power plant conversion. The purpose of this research therefore was to determine the environmental impact of certain variables on the environmental impact on the local community. This study concerns the modeling and analysis of Thailand's biomass power industry using both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Quantitative data was obtained using stratified sampling from 323 biomass power community members and qualitative data from in-depth research of 10 community leaders using simple random sampling while using Partial Least Square (PLS-Graph) software to apply Structural Equations Modeling (SEM) analysis. Results showed from the hypotheses that government policy and community participation had a significant and direct contribution on the overall environmental impact of t he local community.

    Assessment of social impacts of a reservoir on a saline soil area in northeast thailand

    Although useful in flood prevention and as the source of water for irrigation and consumption, reservoirs could nevertheless not merely create negative social impacts for those living near them but also wreak havoc on the environment following their construction. These environmental and social impacts should be addressed especially in the Northeastern part of Thailand where their history revolving in salt mines and traditional salt production. The attitude questionnaires were used in this study to assess the impacts of a reservoir operation in a saline soil area on the social changes in 8 aspects. It was found, based on more than 160 replied questionnaires, that even if most respondents saw that the reservoir improved their standard of living in several aspects, a number of the respondents expressed concerns that their traditional way of life and ancient salt production method were disappearing. These people did express their concerns for their own safety, their worries about their community future, and hopes for better future of their own and that of their children. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
