    The lighting system is a continuously used energy system found in all buildings. This system is highly complex as it includes various types such as incandescent bulbs, fluorescent tubes, HID lamps, and LEDs. These types of loads consist of many electronic components and are significant sources of Auto-Tuned Active Filter signals. These harmonic signals directly affect protective devices and electronic equipment in the building's electrical system. Therefore, reducing the harmonic signals generated by the lighting system is crucial for buildings. Generally, harmonic reduction can be achieved by installing one of three types of filters: active, passive, and hybrid. This research presents the design of an auto-tuned active filter using the MATLAB Simulink and tests it using four lighting load cases. The designed circuit can effectively reduce harmonic signals while also improving the energy efficiency of the building.

    This project presents an alternative way in designing 5th, 7th and 11th harmonic filters by creating a neural network program that can calculate harmonics which are generated in the system by ac or dc drives and it can verify the result using the simulation in verification program. Our program can choose the right harmonic filter and help designing harmonic filter faster, easier and more accurate by concerning the cause of other factors that exclude the formulas such as limitation of the devices in a suitable cost. It will be more and more accurate every time the users use this program. Our program will train itself after inputting new data. The more we use the program, the more accurate it will be. We created the program with easy understandable user interface to facilitate any harmonic filter designers with low experiences to have an ability as an expert harmonic filter designer because our program has a memory of an experienced designer and ability to train itself. Furthermore, our program will help supporting the development in harmonic filter designing for any kinds of future research.

    Harmonics and reduction of energy consumption in lighting systems by using led lamps

    This paper proposes the study and analysis of harmonics, energy consumption and power quality of light emitting diode (LED) lamps equipped in building lighting systems. LED lamps with external (LED MR16) and internal (LED light bulb) drivers are investigated using an experimental setup to compare the results. The power quality of both LED lamps is studied by using a power quality meter to measure the generated harmonic currents from various case studies. The case study is divided into four major cases: one LED lamp is turned on with one driver, two LED lamps are turned on using the two drivers, eight LED lamps are turned on with one driver, and eight LED lamps are turned on with the eight drivers. As harmonics are related to total power factor (PF), which affects the energy savings of the building, hence, a filtering circuit to reduce harmonic current has been designed and implemented to improve power quality and/or power factor of the system. The different cases of harmonic filter insertion at the input of an LED lamp's driver are discussed and then compared with a lighting standard to show the effectiveness of the passive filtering technique used in the studied system. In addition, the obtained result can be applied to both newly built and retrofitted buildings that aim to use LED technology to increase energy efficiency and decrease energy costs, and could be a helpful guide for end-users and manufacturers in addressing and developing LED issues.

    Lighting system is an important part in everyday life. Today, lighting technology has been developing in many aspects. Technology such as Light Emitting Diode (LED) luminaire has been applied to indoor lighting system to replace conventional luminaire. LED lamps have many advantages such as less energy consumption, long life cycle and environmental friendly issue due to without toxic component. However, installation cost is main concern for investor regarding changing conventional lamp toward LED. So, the lighting system in some building are consist of both conventional and LED luminaires. In such a case the power quality must be taken into consideration. This paper aims to study power quality problem in term of harmonics generated by lighting system consisting of both fluorescent and LED luminaires. The obtained result can be used to design filter circuit for harmonic reduction in lighting system.

    Power quality analysis in light emitting diode lamps
    Lighting system plays an important role in every life to increase quality of life and working efficiency. As population increase, urban area has been grown rapidly resulted in increased energy consumption in every section including lighting system. With the current attention in energy and environment issue, many governments have set policy to increase energy efficiency. In lighting system, conventional luminaire with low energy efficiency has been replaced with newer technology with low energy consumption and high energy efficiency such as light emitting diode (LED). Today, LED luminaire has taken considerable proportion of market share; however, the main concern regarding changing conventional lamp toward LED is power quality. This paper aims to study power quality issue in term of generated harmonics from lighting system consisting of LED lamps. The result indicates that LED lamps generate significant amount of current harmonic and cause a distortion in waveform. Thus, it needs taking power quality issue into account before replacing or installing LED into lighting system.

    Analytical study of harmonics issued from LED lamp driver
    (2014-01-01) ;
    Harmonics are always generated in any nonlinear electrical/electronic systems, and cause severe problems in terms of performance and operation. This paper focuses on analytical study of harmonics originated from LED lamps usually functioning using a driver. Since the driver is a switching device, it will be thus a direct harmonic and/or electromagnetic interference (EMI) source of the system. In order to suppress or reduce produced harmonics, a low-pass harmonic filtering technique is proposed and applied. The experimental results can reveal harmonic reduction effectiveness by comparing with lighting standard, which is herein IEC 1000-3-2 (or EN 61000-3-2); this confirms finally the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) of the system.

    The purpose of this research is to study the power loss in three-phase induction motors linked with a three-phase PWM inverter by adjusting various fundamental wave voltages of the motors. The experimental procedures used four adjustment techniques as: 1. Constant DC link voltage inverter and adjusting the modulation amplitude 2. Constant modulation amplitude equal 1 and adjusting DC link voltage of inverter 3. Sixstep inverter and 4. Constant modulation amplitude equal 2.3 (over mod land adjusting DC link voltage of inverter. The four techniques were used to adjust V/f-type fundamental waves. The results indicated that the adjustment technique showing the power input, power output, power loss and efficiency of the motor. © 2007 RPS.

    This paper presents the harmonics and interharmonics estimation of non-stationary signal. The approach is based on wavelet transform analysis. Wavelet transform decomposes the non-stationary signal into sub-band frequency. The decomposition is performed using discrete wavelet transform. Discrete wavelet transform is implemented by using Quadrature Mirror Filter (QMF) Bank. The non-stationary signal are passed through the finite impulse response (FIR) QMF filtering. The coefficient of wavelet on the time-frequency plane. The continuous wavelet transform is applied to the decomposed sub-bands to estimate the harmonics and interharmonics frequencies and amplitude. The harmonics and interharmonics estimation has been tested on non-stationary signal including transient and capacitor bank switching signal.
