    A study of polymer for delay germination in hybrid sweet corn seed production
    (2024-05-01)
    Sodakul, N.
    ;
    The results showed that the pH values of each coating substance formulation exhibited statistically significant differences. Notably, the highest pH value was observed in the coating substance mixed with CMC. Similarly, the viscosity of the coating substances showed significant variations, with the commercial coating substance having the highest viscosity. Following this, the coating substances mixed with CMC, HPMC, NaAlg, and PVP-K30 demonstrated progressively lower viscosities. To assess the uniformity of the coating, the surface characteristics of the seeds were visually examined. The results indicated that seeds coated with the commercial coating substance exhibited the highest coating uniformity. Subsequently, the uniformity levels decreased in the following order: seeds coated with a mixture of PVP-K30, HPMC, CMC, and NaAlg. For the seed quality test after coating, the results showed that all types of polymers had no statistically significant effect on the germination percentage and germination index. If further studies are conducted on the types and concentrations of polymers, it is possible to develop seed coating formulations to delay germination.

    Fabrication of Water-insoluble Polyethylene Oxide and Sodium Alginate using Electrostatic Repulsive Forces: A Preliminary Study
    (2023-01-01)

    ;
    ;
    Polyethylene oxide (PEO) and sodium alginate (NaAlg) are widely used in biomedical applications due to their biocompatibility. The use of electrostatic repulsive forces could be employed to fabricate these polymers into various shapes, including fibers and particles. However, in some cases, their solubility in water could be a drawback. Therefore, this study aims to fabricate samples from PEO-NaAlg blends using electrostatic repulsive forces and stabilize their structure in water using calcium chloride (CaCl<inf>2</inf>) crosslinking method. The preliminary results have shown that the water solubility of the fabricated samples in this study was reduced by crosslinking, as analyzed by Fourier-transform spectroscopy (FTIR). Moreover, the images from scanning electron microscope (SEM) reveal that the fabricated samples were particle-like, and the increased NaAlg content could increase fiber density before crosslinking and particle aggregate formation after crosslinking. However, further studies are still required to optimize the parameters for fiber fabrication and also for future incorporation of bioactive molecules.

    Wound dressings composed of hydroxyethylacryl chitosan (HC) and sodium alginate (SA) were developed with antibacterial activity by loading Ag particles. The formation of Ag particle in the HC/SA films was achieved by an immersion method through in situ chemical reduction of AgNO<inf>3</inf> solution and confirmed by FTIR, SEM-EDS, XRD and XRF techniques. The effect of Ag loading in the Ca-crosslinked HC/SA films with different crosslinking density was studied on swelling behavior, mechanical properties, cytotoxicity, antibacterial activity and drug release behavior. The results showed that Ag loading increased swelling degree in phosphate buffer and enhanced mechanical properties. The HC/SA films with Ag loading exhibited antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus as well as no toxicity on Vero cell. In vitro drug release profiles of the films were examined using para-acetylaminophenol, as a soluble model drug. The increase in crosslinking density and Ag loading prolonged drug releasing rate and almost the films showed linearity profiles. It can be concluded that the HC/SA films with Ag loading have a promising potential in modern wound dressings with antibacterial property and controlled drug release.

    We measured the effect of crosslinking with Ba2+, Ca2+ and Zn2+ ions to sodium alginate (SA) mixed with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) film, prepared by solution casting. Although heavy metal ion crosslinked films had higher tensile strengths than neat SA/CMC films, the elongation at break, light transmission and swelling had decreased. In crosslinked films, film thickness and thermal stability also increased. Crosslinking with Ca2+ ion showed the optimum film properties. The effect of Ca2+ ion concentration between 1 to 4% w/v of CaCl<inf>2</inf> to SA/CMC film properties were further investigated. The 2% w/v of CaCl<inf>2</inf> had dominated the highest tensile strength compared to 3% and 4% w/v of CaCl<inf>2</inf>. Light transmission, thickness and thermal stability were not affected. In conclusion, the 2% w/v CaCl<inf>2</inf> is the appropriated concentration for film preparation in packaging industry.

    In vitro drug release profiles of pH-sensitive hydroxyethylacryl chitosan/sodium alginate hydrogels using paracetamol as a soluble model drug
    (2017-06-01)
    Treenate, Pitchaya
    ;
    The aim of this study is to investigate in vitro drug release profiles of pH-sensitive hydrogels composed of hydroxyethylacryl chitosan (HC) and sodium alginate (SA). The hydrogels were crosslinked by dipping method using different ionic crosslinkers (e.g., Ca2+, Zn2+ and Cu2+). The crosslinking reaction was confirmed by FT-IR. Swelling behavior and stability of the hydrogels in simulated digestive media were investigated. The result indicated that the combination between HC and SA could delay the degradation time of the hydrogels. Calcium crosslinking system showed higher stability than that of zinc or copper crosslinking system. In vitro drug release profiles were studied using paracetamol as a soluble model drug. The amount of paracetamol release in simulated gastric fluid (SGF) was relatively low (<20%). In simulated intestinal fluid (SIF), the burst release of paracetamol was depressed with increasing HC content and/or applying crosslinker. The HC75SA25 formulation demonstrated the linearity of drug release profile. Additionally, the amount of drug release from the 0.5 M calcium HC50SA50 hydrogel in SIF was lower than 20%. The comprehensive results of this study suggested their potential in the application of site-specific oral drug delivery in intestine and colon.

    Novel hydrogel films composed of hydroxyethylacryl chitosan (HC) and sodium alginate (SA) were prepared for biomedical application by using calcium chloride (CaCl<inf>2</inf>) as a nontoxic ionic crosslinker to form a semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN). HC was successfully prepared by following a Michael addition reaction of chitosan (CS) and hydroxyethylacrylate completely dissolved in distilled water at 70 °C. The distribution pattern of Ca2+ ions were well-dispersed within the hydrogel films examined by scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS), implying uniformity of crosslinking. The swelling behavior of the hydrogel films in distilled water, simulated gastric fluid (SGF, pH = 1.2) and phosphate buffer solution (PBS, pH = 7.4) were investigated. The equilibrium swelling degree of the hydrogel films in distilled water increased with a decreas of either the SA content or the concentration of CaCl<inf>2</inf>. The hydrogel films showed pH-dependent behavior in that the shapes of the hydrogel films were stable in SGF while they degraded in PBS. The tensile strength and elongation of the hydrogel films reached 12.1 MPa and 162%, respectively, which presented reasonable mechanical properties during use and enough flexibility to follow skin movement. Cell viability of the hydrogels was measured using a methylthiazol tetrazolium (MTT) assay. The results indicated that the hydrogel films are not cytotoxic.

    Biosorption of copper by spent yeast immobilized in sodium alginate beads
    (2009-12-01)
    Apinthanapong, Muanmai
    ;
    Spent yeast from the brewing industry was immobilized with sodium alginate and used in a study on biosorption of Cu(II). Kinetic models were developed using pseudo-first and -second order equations and tested for the sorption of Cu(II). The results showed that the sorption of Cu(II) onto immobilized spent yeast in sodium alginate beads could be described by a pseudo-second order model, which had high correlation coefficients (r<inf>2</inf>). The rate constant (k<inf>2</inf>) and the initial sorption rate (h) were calculated. The values of the rate constants were found to decrease from 0.208 to 0.037 g/mg min with an increase in the initial concentration of Cu(II) from 20 to 80 ppm. The initial sorption rate increased from 0.014 to 0.037 mg/g min as the initial concentration of Cu(II) was varied from 20 to 80 ppm. The observed dependence of the sorption rate on the initial concentration of Cu(II) indicated that the removal of Cu(II) was more rapid when the initial concentration of the solution was high.
