The previous methods of human airflow measurement such as rhinomanometry or acoustic rhinometry could not visualize the airflow and calculated the velocity magnitude in specific region of nasal cavity. Thus, this study proposes the combination of CT and CFD analysis of nasal airflow simulation in normal human breathing. This method can demonstrate the airflow direction, and also calculate the velocity magnitude inside the nasal cavity. The processes of this study are segmentation, meshing, solving, and post-processing. Firstly, Mimic 10.01 software was used to segment the nasal cavity. Secondly, Pro-STAR/amm software was used to generate trimmed mesh of 338, 496 elements. Finally, computational grid model was imported to STAR-CD version 3.26 for numerical computation, and visualize the solution by post-processing. The result shows that velocity magnitude of airflow is greatest in nasal valve area which is the narrowest area of the human nose. Also, the flow commonly pass through the main nasal passage and middle meatus areas of nose. Experimental validation will be reported in the further publication. In conclusion, this study is the important begining of an applied CFD analysis with medical imaging. CT imaging combines with CFD analysis could be useful for rhinologist as a nose function evaluation technique. Moreover, the applications of this method could be utilized in a wide range of research topics, especially development of diagnostic and treatment planning techniques.

This paper presents a study of heat transfer efficiency in double wall infant incubator by using 3D finite element method. Double wall infant incubator was modeled by using general CAD program then FEM analysis was implemented based on heat transfer and fluid dynamic principle. Real temperature measurement also performed to validate our simulation by using a general infant incubator and an infant incubator analyzer. Real experimental data at each 4 monitoring points and simulation data provide a small difference in temperature. In the future work, infant model should be included into our incubator in order to estimate a heat source effect from newborn baby. ©2012 IEEE.

An accurate electromyography (EMG) classification algorithm to control a virtual hand prosthesis with 12 degrees of freedom using two surface EMG electrodes is presented in this paper. We propose the application of independent component analysis (ICA) for blind-source separation of the EMG signals obtained from two electrodes. One of the problems affecting the EMG classification accuracy is the location dependence of the EMG signal due to the superposition of signals from multiple sources. ICA is used to separate the two signals obtained from two surface electrodes into two independent EMG signals prior to the feature extraction and classification processes. We demonstrate that the EMG classification accuracy can be improved using the ICA algorithm. We also propose a novel eigen-based feature that is extracted from the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) magnitude spectrum. Our new feature not only decreases feature dimensions but also performs better than other well-known features. We also implement the EMG classification scheme on the virtual robot arm. The performance shows promising result as indicated by a decrease in the Davies-Bolden (DB) index after applying the ICA. © 2013 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Ventilator has become an intensively important part of medicalhealthcare, especially in this widespread pandemic of COVID-19. The most popular one is an Ambu Bag with a bag valve mask (BVM). This ventilator, however, requires a manual resuscitator to operate its function with a limited air volume inside the bag. During the operation, moreover, it causes the noisy sound due to its mechanism as well. The alternative is using Non-Ambu Bag ventilator. This optional ventilator can regulate using user's smartphone to command the operation of ventilator with configurable quantity and rate of volume and flow.

In this paper, the cause of significant variation in sensing responses of identical QCM sensors array in a circular QCM chamber is analyzed by fluid dynamic simulation. Moreover, the simulation is used to determine an appropriate shape of flow chamber for QCM sensor array. Simulation results show that the flow in a circular-shaped QCM chamber design is primarily turbulent. In addition, the degree of turbulence is increased with flow rate. Thus, sensors at various locations see different sample dispersions causing their sensing behaviors to be significantly different. The QCM chamber has been redesigned to be rectangular line and simulation results indicate that it can be the solution to the problem because flow in the new design is primarily laminar with uniform sample velocity.

In this paper, we investigate the design and construction of improved-resolution x-ray detector. Our detector is an array of photo-transistors coated with gadolinium based phosphor similar that used in the x-ray cassettes and used in advanced medical CT detector. The x-ray array detector module consists of two main part: the detector frontend and data acquisition system. The detector frontend includes preamplifying, low-pass filter. The data acquisition system is served to convert the signal in to digital form and forward it to personnel computer. The application of the detector as a CT detector shows a promising result. © 2006 IEEE.

This study reports the preliminary development to biosensor using electrochemistry for lactate analysis. In this work, PEDOT/PSS modified screen printed carbon was developed as working electrode with lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), the oxidized form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) and glutaraldehyde. The result shows that the current from working electrode with PEDOT/PSS were higher compared with screen printed carbon electrode. These results were consistent with PEDOT/PSS properties that are conducting polymers and can help for more rapid electron transfer. These favorable characteristics allowed its application to detect normal blood lactate concentration in human beings. ©2012 IEEE.

Adenoma Dysplasia Grading of Colorectal Polyps Using Fast Fourier Convolutional ResNet (FFC-ResNet)
Colorectal polyps are precursor lesions of colorectal cancer; hence, early detection and dysplasia grading of polyps are essential for determining cancer risk, the possibility of developing subsequent polyps, and follow-up recommendations. The significant contribution of this study is the development of an enhanced deep-learning model called Fast Fourier Convolutional ResNet (FFC-ResNet) to classify dysplasia grades of polyps. It is based on the ResNet-50 architecture and uses cross-feature fusion, which combines local features extracted by traditional spatial convolution with global features extracted by Fourier convolution. Due to the compensatory effect between local and global features, the learnability and performance of FFC-ResNet have increased. The proposed FFC-ResNet was developed and tested using UniToPatho, a dataset containing 7000 μm and 800 μm hematoxylin-and-eosin (H&E)-stained colorectal images. And a favorable performance of sensitivity 0.95, specificity 0.93, balance accuracy 0.94, precision 0.95, F1 score 0.95, and AUC 0.99 was obtained using 800 μm polyp patches.

Biometrics such as fingerprints, hand geometry, face and voice biometrics provide a reliable alternative for identity verification and are gaining industry and citizen acceptance. Among these, hand geometry verification has emerged as the most suitable biometric modality for medium and low security application due to its speed and unobtrusive nature. However, the applications of hand geometry have been limited due to its limited accuracy when compared to other modalities. The concept of the well-known Eigen face have been applied for palmprint image for person identification. The derived Eigen value and Eigen vector contributes to the important feature in the classification process. For training the classifiers, a library set of 50 patterns is used. The tested data consists of 100 samples and produced correct classification rate close to 95% © 2006 IEEE.

Tomographic imaging is a technique for exploration of a cross-section of an inspected object without destruction. Normally, the input data, known as the projections, are gathered by repeatedly radiating coherent waveform through the object in a number of viewpoints, and receiving by an array of corresponding detector in the opposite position. In this research, as a replacement of radiographs, the series of photographs taken around the opaque object under the ambient light is completely served as the projections. The purposed technique can be adopted with various beam geometry including parallel-beam, cone-beam and spiral cone-beam geometry. From the process of tomography, the outcome is the stack of pseudo cross-sectional image. Not the internal of cross section is authentic, but the edge or contour is valid.
