Item type:Publication, Influence of divergence tapered V-baffles on heat transfer behaviors in a rectangular channel(2026-05-15) ;Keaitnukul, Warin ;Pingta, Supapat ;Phila, Arnut ;Wongcharee, KhwanchitMaruyama, NaokiThis study examines the effects of Divergence Tapered V-Baffle (henceforth DT-VB) regarding the heat transfer and friction loss behavior within the rectangle-shaped duct. The baffle attack angles (α) were set at 45°, 60°, 75°, and 90°. The experimental results indicated that as Reynolds numbers increased, the Nusselt numbers exhibited an upward trend, while the friction values showed a corresponding decrease. The Nusselt number improved consistently as the attack angle decreased, with baffles at a 60° attack angle producing the highest friction loss, followed by those at 45°, 75°, and 90°. Among the configurations tested, the 45° attack angle demonstrated the best thermal performance due to its relatively low friction loss and enhanced heat transfer. The highest thermal performance factor (TPF) of 2.13 was attained at a 45° attack angle and a Reynolds number of 6,000. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Numerical analysis of the influence of press-fitting on the fatigue life of railway axle(2024-05-17) ;Nwe, TheingiThis study investigated the influence of press-fitting on the stress concentration and fatigue life of axles. Models of finite element analysis (FEA) with and without the press-fitting effect were developed using Abaqus software. These models were used to analyze the axle strength and profile the stress histories under various loads and running conditions, such as bending load, wheel-rail contact force, lateral force, and press-fitting force. Their combined loads were responsible for the axle fracture. Also, the prediction of fatigue life was extended to a three-dimensional stress state under fully reversed cyclic loading and variable overload spectra using commercial Fe-safe software with a strain-based Brown-Miller Morrow fatigue algorithm. With the press-fitting effect, the maximum von Mises stress at the groove notch transition zone of the axle was 6% higher than without the press-fitting effect. Press-fitting reduced the fatigue life of an axle by 37% compared to the ones without press-fitting, and the most damage happened at the same node as the maximum von Mises stress. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Heat Transfer Analysis in a Channel Mounted with In-Line Downward-Facing and Staggered Downward-Facing Notched Baffles(2025-09-01) ;Phila, A. ;Keaitnukul, W. ;Kumar, M.; Chokphoemphun, S.This study presents a comprehensive analysis of heat transfer enhancement, flow resistance, and thermal performance in rectangular channels equipped with three baffle configurations: conventional transverse baffles (TBs), in-line downward-facing notched baffles (IDF-NBs), and staggered downward-facing notched baffles (SDF-NBs). The influence of the pitch-to-baffle height ratio (P/e), ranging from 2.0 to 10, was examined across Reynolds numbers from 6000 to 24,000. Results indicate that a P/e ratio of 6.0 consistently yielded the highest Nusselt numbers across all configurations. While the TB configuration produced significant heat transfer at P/e= 6.0, it experienced a substantial friction penalty, with its best thermal enhancement factor (TEF = 1.168) observed at P/e = 8.0. The IDF-NB configuration achieved optimal performance at P/e = 6.0 with a TEF of 1.257, offering a better balance between heat transfer and flow resistance. The SDF-NB arrangement outperformed all other cases, delivering the highest Nusselt number (Nu = 116.9), TEF (1.362), and improved flow reattachment, primarily due to enhanced mixing from the staggered layout. These findings demonstrate that the staggered notched baffle configuration at P/e = 6.0 offers the most effective thermal performance enhancement among the configurations studied. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Influence of perforated twisted tapes with vortex generator wings on heat transfer performance and entropy in a heat exchanger tube(2026-01-01) ;Mehta, Rajesh ;Gupta, Anirudh ;Kumar, Nitin ;Eiamsa-ard, SmithThis study conducts an investigative exploration of thermal and hydraulic performance regarding hybrid inserts which combine perforated twisted tapes with vortex generator wings mounted inside circular tubes. The insert design makes use of both swirl flow and secondary vortex generation which breaks up the thermal boundary layer and boosts convective heat transfer rates. During this investigation, researchers utilized water as the working fluid at Reynolds number (Re) from 3000 to 21,000 to study the effect of three perforation diameter ratio (d/D) 0.143, 0.19, and 0.238 and respective Vortex generator (VG) edge cut ratio (a/D) 0.143, 0.19, and 0.238. Nusselt number (Nu) reach 182.3 % and thermal enhancement factor (TEF) achieve 1.68 at Re = 15,000 when using the enhanced tube compared to a smooth tube. The industrial application of larger VG openings at standard spacing produced a beneficial relationship between thermal performance and flow resistance when the pressure rise reached 345 %. The analysis of entropy generation showed heat transfer irreversibility gave way to frictional irreversibility when both perforation dimension and Re became larger. System design optimization prerequisites involved trade-offs which met Bejan number (Be) analysis trends. The Random Forest machine learning model combined with ANN and Linear Regression models contributed to thermal parameter prediction (Nu, f, TEF) by delivering a predictive accuracy level with less than 6.6 % deviation. The research leads to vital knowledge needed for developing compact heat exchangers integrating passive enhancement methods. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Effect of conical air distributors on drying of peppercorns in a fluidized bed dryer: Prediction using an artificial neural network(2022-08-01); ;Wongcharee, K.; ;Chokphoemphun, S.Chamoli, S.The effect of conical air distributors on the drying of peppercorns in a fluidized bed dryer was experimentally studied. A flat perforated sheet was installed in the column at the base of the bed. Conical air distributors consisted of two parts. The first was a solid cone located below an air duct, while the second part was a perforated metal cone placed on the flat perforated sheet. Experiments were carried out using perforated metal cones with three different height to base diameter ratios, (h/H) values of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 and three different air velocities, 1.2Umf, 1.6Umf, and 2.0Umf. An air distributor, consisting of a solid cone and a perforated metal cone with h/H = 1.0 and an air velocity of 2.0Umf, showed the best drying performance. It was also discovered that increasing the air velocity accelerated the drying process. A neural network was created to predict the moisture content of peppercorns during the drying process. The split, sample type, spilt ratio, momentum, and learning rate, as well as the numbers of hidden layers, hidden nodes, and training cycles all had an impact. A maximum coefficient of determination of 0.996 was found for the best model. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Multiaxial Fatigue-Life Prediction of Railway Axles with Consideration of Braking Effects(2023-01-01) ;Nwe, TheingiEnsuring safety in the design of railway infrastructure and rolling stock is a critical aspect of railway operations. Railway axles are subjected to fluctuating bending and torsion loads, which often lead to the development of plastic stresses in the vicinity of fillets and notches, even though they are designed to withstand nominal elastic loads. This study aims to provide an accurate fatigue-life prediction for a motor bogie axle, taking into account the braking effects in conjunction with press fitting and the influence of masses in motion on the axle. Initially, the stress and deflection of the axle under combined loadings are calculated in accordance with the EN 13104 standard. Subsequently, a comparative simulation analysis is conducted using ABAQUS commercial software, with particular emphasis on specific loading conditions. A strainbased approach is employed to estimate fatigue life under multiaxial loading and variable amplitude overloading scenarios, utilizing fe-safe commercial fatigue analysis software. The results reveal a strong correlation between the theoretical and finite element analyses. The braking effects are found to reduce fatigue life by 50% compared to the influences of press fitting combined with masses in motion. This research highlights the significance of considering braking effects in fatigue-life predictions of railway axles to ensure safe and robust design. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Performance of a heat exchanger with compound inclined circular-rings and twisted tapes(2022-09-01); ;Samruaisin, P.; ;Ruengpayungsak, K.Eiamsa-Ard, P.Optimization was done of the aerothermal performance factor (η) of a tube into which a combination of inclined circular-rings (ICRs) and twisted-tapes (TTs) were installed. The key contribution of this research is determination of the appropriate ICR and TT sizes to produce the best heat exchanger performance. An ICR's purpose is to produce counter-rotating vortices, whereas the TT's role is to create swirl flow within a tube to improve turbulence and transfer cold fluid from the core region to the heated-wall zone. The influence of circular-ring inclination angle (α = 30o, 45o, 60o and 90o), number of twisted tapes (H = 2, 4, and 6) and twist ratios (TR = 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0) on heat transfer and pressure losses were assessed to determine an optimum η condition. The heat transfer and friction factor tend to increase with H values and decreasing TR. The heat transfer of ICRs together with TTs is higher than in a plain tube by up to 128.7% and 155.3%, respectively, while it is better than the transverse circular-ring (α = 90o) and twisted-tape by up to 116.9% and 146.5%, respectively. Furthermore, due to moderate heat transfer and low pressure losses, a maximal η of 1.66 was achieved for α = 30o, H = 2 and TR = 3.0 within the examined range. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, A comprehensive review on femtosecond laser polishing of silicon nitride: fundamentals, current progress, and industrial outlook(2026-01-01) ;Jian, Huang; ; Eiamsa-ard, SmithSilicon nitride ((Formula presented.)) ceramics are indispensable in aerospace bearings and semiconductor substrates due to their exceptional mechanical and thermal properties. However, achieving damage-free, atomic-level surface finishes remains problematic. Traditional mechanical polishing induces subsurface microcracks, while chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) is plagued by low material removal rates and environmental toxicity. This review critically evaluates femtosecond laser polishing as a transformative, “green” non-contact alternative. We first elucidate the laser-matter interaction mechanisms specific to wide-bandgap (Formula presented.) ((Formula presented.) eV), clarifying how multiphoton absorption enables “cold ablation” by suppressing the heat-affected zone (HAZ) via the two-temperature model (TTM) dynamics. A distinct material removal mechanism driven by rapid thermal decomposition ((Formula presented.)) and phase explosion is highlighted. Synthesizing recent experimental data, we establish a quantitative process window. Operating slightly above the ablation threshold ((Formula presented.)) with high spot overlap (70%–90%) is critical to balance surface leveling against the incubation effect, which otherwise triggers porosity. Furthermore, we address the unique challenges of inducing periodic structures (LIPSS) on dielectric surfaces and propose a hybrid manufacturing strategy—integrating high-speed laser roughing with CMP finishing—to resolve efficiency constraints. Finally, an industrial roadmap involving high-throughput polygon scanners and AI-driven closed-loop control is outlined, providing a comprehensive reference for advancing femtosecond laser polishing toward scalable, high-precision manufacturing. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Influence of bed height and drying temperature on shrimp drying characteristics using a fluidized-bed dryer(2023-08-01) ;Nanan, K. ;Eiamsa-ard, S. ;Chokphoemphun, S. ;Kumar, ManojThe aim of this work was to study shrimp drying in a fluidized-bed dryer to develop a process that performs better than traditional (sun dried) shrimp production. In these experiments, the influence of shrimp size (small, medium and large), bed height (h/D = 0.33, 0.66 and 1.0) and air temperature (60, 70 and 80 °C) on the drying rate were studied under a constant blower power. The experimental results showed that the moisture content of boiled shrimp decreased with an increased drying temperature due to the consequently higher temperature differential between the hot air and the shrimp. When the bed height (h/D) was reduced, shrimp moisture removal increased, but it also increased when shrimp size decreased. Moreover, the production rate of dried shrimp under a bed height h/D = 1.0 and drying temperature of 80 °C yielded the highest dried shrimp production rate of 4.83, 4.21 and 3.72 kg/h for small, medium and large shrimps, respectively. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Thermal Visualization and Performance Analysis in a Channel Installing Transverse Baffles with Square Wings(2022-11-01) ;Eiamsa-Ard, Smith ;Phila, Arnut ;Wongcharee, Khwanchit; The experimental examination of local heat transfer, thermal intensification, friction factors, and thermal performance factors (TPF) in a rectangular channel with square-winged transverse baffles (SW-TB) are presented in this paper. The purpose of this study is to modify the typical transverse baffles (TB) into square-winged transverse baffles (SW-TB) in order to improve the thermal performance and heat transfer rate of the channel. The effects of SW-TBs with various wing attack angles and Reynolds numbers on the heat transfer performance characteristics were examined using a thermochromic liquid crystal sheet. In the experiments, the SW-TBs were attached to the bottom wall of the channel, which had an aspect ratio (W:H) of 3.75:1. The SW-TBs had a width (w) of 150 mm, a square perforated cross-sectional area (a × b) of 8 × 8 mm2, and attack angles (θ) of 0° (solid transverse-baffle), 22.5°, 45°, 67.5°, and 90°. The bottom wall of the channel was evenly heated, while the other walls were insulated. The temperature contours on the heated surface were plotted using temperatures obtained through using the thermochromic liquid crystal (TLC) image-processing method. Experimental results revealed that the SW-TBs created multiple impinging jets, apart from the recirculation. At the proper attack angles (θ = 22.5° and 45°), the SW-TBs offered greater heat transfer rates and caused lower friction losses, resulting in higher TPFs than the solid transverse baffles. In the current work, channels where the SW-TBs display a θ = 45° presented the greatest TPF, as high as 1.26. The multiple impinging jets issuing by the SW-TBs suppressed the size of the recirculation flow and allowed better contact between the fluid flow and channel wall.
