Rare earth oxides (REO) are well known in catalysts, glass-related industries, and permanent magnets manufacturing for almost 70%, according to the mature industry. This work proposes the new developments of REO as the emergence for mechanical energy harvesting (MEH) technology. The binary-system of REO or R<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf>, including La<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf>, Sm<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf> and Nd<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf>, are used as dielectric materials to incorporate polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) for fabricating flexible triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG), one of MEH devices. The change in REO’s amount was studied at 0.5, 2.5, 5, and 10 wt%. Upon applying mechanical force in vertical direction, the PDMS/R<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf> TENG can convert mechanical energy into electricity for the best value of ~66 V and ~93 μA with power density of about ~62 μW·cm-2. The PDMS/La<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf> can be used to fully charge the 0.22 and 0.33 μF capacitor within 3 seconds and power up over 100 LEDs directly. Moreover, the influence of triboelectric polarity and dielectricity on the triboelectric output performance is scientifically discussed by following the percolation point with air breakdown limitation’s theory. The researcher believes that the knowledge of this work will be inexhaustible useful to develop a group of REO in broad applications of MEH electronics in future.

Capacitive humidity sensor is designed on interdigitage electrodes (IDEs) by lithography process for nice humidity absorption and desorption. This paper proposed the IDEs humidity sensor base on bilayers sensing of graphene oxide (GO) structure by dip coating method. Each GO layer is held by covalent-bond forces from adhesive layer. It demonstrates durable of sensing layer material. Raman spectroscopy analysis is exhibited on GO presence and scanning electron microscope (SEM) explored on the GO bilayers structure. The IDEs/GO bilayers humidity sensor demonstrated ultrahigh sensitivity (up to 2014.61%) and linear responses at relative humidity (RH) ranges 10 to 70% while IDEs/GO single layer showed exponential responses. Moreover, it significantly improved on response (12 sec) and recovery times (18sec), a little hysteresis (up to 46.77%) and stable repeatability. Finally, the durable of IDEs/GO bilayers humidity sensor is exhibited by long-term ability measurement (time period 35 days). Therefore, these characteristics of GO bilayers structure base on adhesive layer are clearly demonstrated high performances for alternatively used with humidity sensor applications.

—Capacitive type humidity sensor was fabricated on CMOS technology by lithography process base on silicon p-substrate with Nitride passivation layer and designed on interdigitage electrodes (IDEs). This paper proposed the influence of various stock graphene oxide (GO) concentrations on humidity sensor responses behavior by drop coating method. The Raman spectroscopy is demonstrated for GO presence and scanning electron microscope (SEM) is exhibited the GO surface morphologies. The capacitance value is examined under different relative humidity (RH) ranges at 0.30% to 80% RH. The IDEs capacitive humidity sensor shows linear, polynomial and exponential responses behaviors for high, medium and low stock GO concentrations, respectively. The high stock GO concentration is significantly improved all dominant humidity sensor properties, especially the sensitivity at low RH (10%, 20%, 30% and 40% RH) which is improved up to 6683.65%, 2097.27%, 1984.91% and 1465.93%, respectively. Furthermore, it shows linear responses behavior by 0.991 for coefficient of determination of wide RH. Moreover, the IDEs capacitive humidity sensors are comparatively examined response/recovery times, hysteresis as well as repeatability. Finally, high stock GO concentration of humidity sensor is exhibited under various temperature operating ranges (20-50 degree Celsius). It clearly demonstrates for alternative applicability to use on humidity sensor applications.

The utilization of biodegradable materials for the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has provoked intensive interest since the growth of electronic devices tended to operate in proximity of the human body. This work proposed highly efficient biopolymer, based on a chitosan (CS) TENG, by incorporating protein-based compounds as fillers. The effect of different types of protein; albumin, egg-shell membrane (ESM) and silk fiber (SF), with the loaded content on the output performance of TENG was explored. It was found that the output signal can be maintained and even enhanced by embedding interlaced-fiber and making a gauze-like structure inside the CS matrix. Morphologies not only have different types of amino acid side chains, but also affect triboelectric output performance. High content of glycine, alanine and serine consequently increases the output signal by providing additional charges from molecular polarizations. Mixing glycine amino acid in the presence of alanine and serine reduces the centrosymmetric structure of the host amino acid and creates polar domains. Adding SF in CS, therefore, achieves the best output voltage (V<inf>OC</inf>) and current (I<inf>SC</inf>) as compared to other additives. The CS/SF TENG, with 10 wt% SF added, can reach ~ 77 V and ~ 13 µA of V<inf>OC</inf> and I<inf>SC</inf>, respectively. Its maximum output power of ~ 202 μW, with power density of 22.4 μW/cm2, is 6 times higher than that from pristine CS TENG, which can easily light up 59 light emitting diodes (LEDs) connected in series. Finally, the biodegradability was confirmed at various weeks related to the output measurement of V<inf>OC</inf> and I<inf>SC</inf>. After 9 weeks of the soil burial test, the CS/SF still generated ~ 20 V V<inf>OC</inf> and ~ 2.5 µA I<inf>SC</inf> with 30% weight loss.

This work demonstrated the influence of pore morphologies on the mechanical behavior and tribo-electrical performance of fabricated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sponge. Commercial seasonings with different 3D geometric shapes were used as a sacrificial template to control the pore structure of the PDMS sponge. The result indicated that the softest PDMS sponge was molded by using a sodium chloride (NaCl) crystal template, as indicated by the lowest compressive modulus value. Then, P(VDF–HFP) was incorporated into PDMS prepolymer in order to enhance the charge generation characteristic of PDMS. Besides, the composite 3D structure was revealed using synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy (SRXTM). Interpretation from the SRXTM result confirmed that the porous structure had different pore shapes, i.e., an octahedral-like shape and a circular-like shape in a particular sponge. By pairing the composite PDMS sponge with an aluminum (Al) plate for the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), the maximum electrical outputs of ~29.9 V and ~0.56 μA for voltage and current, respectively, were detected with loading 50 wt% of P(VDF – HFP). The presented TENG was applied successfully for sensing basic human activities practically, which demonstrated potential applications in wearable electronics.

The immense potential of colossal dielectric materials for use in high-energy-density storage applications has driven much recent development and research. The discovering of such dielectric materials with the required high permittivity and low dielectric loss is still a highly challenging. Herein, the donor-acceptor co-doped TiO<inf>2</inf> has been developed based on (Mg<inf>0.5</inf>W<inf>0.5</inf>) <inf>x</inf> Ti<inf>1-</inf><inf>x</inf> O<inf>2</inf>, (In<inf>0.5</inf>W<inf>0.5</inf>) <inf>x</inf> Ti<inf>1-</inf><inf>x</inf> O<inf>2</inf> and (Ni<inf>0.5</inf>Nb<inf>0.5</inf>) <inf>x</inf> Ti<inf>1-</inf><inf>x</inf> O<inf>2</inf>; where x = 0.005–0.01, that manifests high permittivity (>104). The resulted permittivity attains the quadruple than that of pure TiO<inf>2</inf> ceramic with low dielectric loss of ∼0.02 over a broad temperature range. This performance is corresponded to the electron-pinned defect-dipoles, providing the extra dielectric response to those of rutile TiO<inf>2</inf> host ceramics. This research offers the way to develop functional colossal-dielectric materials by engineering complex defects into the bulk that will help for further discovery of promising new dielectric materials in future.

Capacitive humidity sensor was fabricated on CMOS technology with multiple parallel metals coplanar (interdigitage electrodes, IDEs) by lithography process base on silicon bulk substrate and coated Nickel-gold onto IDEs by electroless method. This paper proposed the IDEs humidity sensor with vertical alignment of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods on thick seed layer by sputtering process (IDEs/ZnO nanorods) for high sensitivity. ZnO nanorods structure and morphology were obtained by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-Ray diffractometer (XRD), respectively. The humidity sensors were comparatively examined properties before/after sputtering process. We have observed sputtering time for 3.0h with 100 nm thick seed layer effected to optimal vertical alignment of ZnO nanorods (length 480 nm) which shown high sensitivity (up to 1913.83%). Moreover, the IDEs/ZnO nanorods significantly improved on wide ranges relative humidity (30-90 %RH), fast response (up to 42.39%) and a little recovery times (16sec), precise repeatability as well as low hysteresis (18.22%). Finally, it demonstrated long-term stability and also exhibited a temperature dependence.

An interdigitated electrode (IDE) capacitive humidity sensor fabricated on a silicon substrate was used to investigate sensing materials, which proved to be an ultrahigh-sensitivity humidity sensor. A sensing layer combination (SLC) between vertically aligned ZnO nanorods and optimal graphene oxide (GO) was prepared on the device and was tested as a humidity sensor. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) exhibited crystallized wurtzite structure of ZnO nanorods and transmission electron microscope (TEM) shown perfectly indexed hexagonal wurtzite ZnO structure dots position correspondence. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to analyze ZnO nanorods/GO morphologies. Furthermore, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) clearly exhibited GO presence and hydrophilic functional groups (carboxyl, epoxy, and hydroxyl), respectively. The SLC prominently demonstrated ultrahigh sensitivity (up to 196.95% or 1.97 times from commercial sensor; HS1101, Humirel) and linear responses behavior with 0.96 for coefficient of determination. The device sensitivity obviously improved as steps of 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90% RH at values of 1.09, 1.41, 1.51, 1.65, 1.80, and 1.91 times, respectively. The device also exhibited fast response (25 s) and short recovery times (17 s). Its hysteresis (6.58%) manifestly improved to 1.84 times. Moreover, repeatability and long-term ability of the device demonstrated high accuracy (range ±0.37pF) and durability. © 2020 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. A composite of bacterial cellulose and titanate nanotubes (BC/TNT) was prepared for use as a stretchable motion sensor in smart and wearable electronics. The composite was characterized using various techniques such as UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy, SEM, XRD, IR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. It was found that the dielectric constant of BC/TNT was up to 2.6 times that of BC with similar loss tangent, indicating improved charge storage. The composite was also constructed into a Kirigami pattern for improved stretchability. With a tensile strain of 0.4%, the change in resistance relative to the original resistance (ΔR/R <inf>0</inf>) was found to be 5.7% and 6.9% for BC and BC/TNT, respectively, demonstrating improved sensing performance.

Understanding the fundamentals of transport properties in two-dimensional (2D) materials is essential for their applications in devices, sensors, and so on. Herein, we report the impedance spectroscopic study of carbon nitride nanosheets (CNNS) and the composite with anatase (TiO<inf>2</inf>/CNNS, 20 atom% Ti), including their interaction with atmospheric water. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N<inf>2</inf> adsorption/desorption, solid state 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and transmission electron microscopy. It is found that CNNS is highly insulating (resistivity ρ ∼ 1010 Ω cm) and its impedance barely changes during a 20 min-measurement at room temperature and 70% relative humidity. Meanwhile, incorporating the semiconducting TiO<inf>2</inf> nanoparticles (∼10 nm) reduces ρ by one order of magnitude, and the decreased ρ is proportional to the exposure time to atmospheric water. Sorbed water shows up at low frequency (<102 Hz) with relaxation time in milliseconds, but the response intrinsic to CNNS and TiO<inf>2</inf>/CNNS is evident at higher frequency (>104 Hz) with relaxation time in microseconds. These two signals apparently correlate to the endothermic peak at ≤110 °C and >250 °C, respectively, in differential scanning calorimetry experiments. Universal power law analysis suggests charge hopping across the 3D conduction pathways, consistent with the capacitance in picofarad typical of grain response. Our work demonstrates that the use of various formalisms (i.e., impedance, permittivity, conductivity, and modulus) combined with a simple universal power law analysis provides insights into water-induced transport of the TiO<inf>2</inf>/CNNS composite without complicated curve fitting procedure or dedicated humidity control.
