Item type:Publication, Heat transfer enhancement in a rectangular channel with twisted tape inserts(2009-01-01) ;Nuthong, W. ;Eiamsa-Ard, S. ;Nanan, K. ;Eiamsa-Ard, P.Experimental investigation of heat transfer and friction factor behaviors in a rectangular channel with multiple twisted tapes (MTTs) is carried out. In each run, five MTTs are simultaneously used as the swirl flow generators in a test section. The lower wall of the channel is subjected to uniform heat flux conditions while the upper wall is insulated. Parametric runs are made for Reynolds numbers ranging from 2700 to 9000, the tapes with twist-length to twist-width ratios (y/w) of 3, 4 and 5 while the aspect ratio of AR = W/H = 10 is fixed throughout. Experiments using smooth channel are also performed for comparison. The experimental results reveal that heat transfer in the channels with MTTs at twist ratios (y/w) of 3, 4 and 5 are respectively increased around 55%, 37% and 22% over those in the smooth channel. In addition, the empirical correlations of the Nusselt number and friction factor in the developed flow region for the channels fitted with MTTs are also derived. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Heat transfer augmentation by helically twisted tapes as swirl and turbulence promoters(2012-10-01) ;Eiamsa-ard, S. ;Yongsiri, K. ;Nanan, K.This paper describes heat transfer enhancement attributed to helically twisted tapes (HTTs). Each helically twisted tape was fabricated by twisting a straight tape to form a typical twisted tape then bending the twisted tape into a helical shape. The experiments were performed using HTTs with three twist ratios (y/. W) of 2, 2.5 and 3, three helical pitch ratios (p/. D) of 1, 1.5 and 2 for Reynolds number between 6000 and 20,000. The conventional helical tape (CHT) was also tested for comparison. The obtained results reveal that at similar conditions (y/. W and . p/. D), HTTs give lower Nusselt number and friction but higher thermal performance factor than CHTs. Heat transfer rate and friction factor increase as the tape twist ratio and helical pitch ratio decrease, while the thermal performance shows opposite trend. In the present range, the highest thermal performance factor of 1.29 is achieved by utilizing the tape with the largest twist ratio (y/. W=3) and helical pitch ratio (p/. D=2) at Reynolds number of 6000. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Thermal performance enhancement of a circular tube fitted with inclined perforated disk inserts(2026-03-01) ;Mehta, Rajesh ;Gupta, Anirudh ;Kumar, Nitin ;Eiamsa-ard, SmithHeat exchangers are crucial devices in industries, and enhancing their thermal performance while controlling pressure losses remains a significant challenge. This paper examines the idea that inclined perforated disk (IPD) inserts can be effectively used to improve heat transfer in circular tubes with constant heat flux conditions at acceptable levels of hydraulic penalties. Turbulent airflow with Reynolds numbers (Re) ranging from 5000 to 21,000 was examined in experiments, and three perforation indices (PI = 0.21, 0.24, and 0.27) were tested to determine the effects of hole density on thermal and hydraulic performance. Evidence showed that the Nusselt number (Nu) had been improved by over 86 % compared to plain tubes, with the thermal enhancement factor (TEF) reaching as high as 1.53 at PI = 0.27 and Re = 5000. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) and neural network modelling multi-objective optimization were used to test the results of the experiment and determine the best operating conditions at PI = 0.21. The paper has demonstrated that inclined perforated disk inserts can form a viable passive method for enhancing the efficiency of heat exchangers, as the swirl and jet flow patterns created by the perforations effectively break the thermal boundary layer, thereby increasing the rate of convective heat transfer. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Enhanced thermal effectiveness of square duct with V-type double-baffles: Numerical study(2024-09-01); ;Sripattanapipat, Somchai; ;Skullong, SompolPromthaisong, PitakThe article puts forward three-dimensional computational research on heat transmission augmentation within a square channel containing 45o V-type double-baffles positioned on the lower and top parts at regular intervals in the turbulence zone for Reynolds numbers (Re) that vary from 3000 to 20,000. The primary goal of this research is to increase the thermal effectiveness and relative Nusselt number (Nu/Nu<inf>0</inf>), in order to conserve energy and reduce the size of the heating or cooling system. The simulations utilize a finite volume approach in common with the SIMPLE algorithm, whereas the turbulent model used is the realizable k–ε. The baffles are designed to be separated vertically for reducing pressure loss. Both single V-baffles and double V-baffles have four relative pitches (PR = 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, and 1.0) and height/blockage ratios (BR = 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, and 0.2), with a fixed attack angle (α) of 45o. The computational findings show that both V-baffles are capable of producing the primary vortices, but only the double V-baffles have the ability to provide the impinging streams onto the wall, cooling the region behind the baffles. This suggests that the double V-baffles not only boost heat transmission but also reduce frictional loss. When compared to a single V-baffle, the double ones enhance heat transfer by an average of 1.04–9.94% while decreasing frictional loss by an average of 9.88–31.73%. The thermal effectiveness factor (TEF) of the double V-baffles ranges from 1.03 to 3.21, and its peak value of around 3.21 is for PR = 0.4, BR = 0.05, at lower Re. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Heat transfer evaluation of turbulent flows through gear-ring elements(2017-01-01) ;Ruengpayungsak, K. ;Wongcharee, K.; ; Heat transfer and friction loss characteristics in tubular heat exchangers with gear-ring turbulators (GR-Ts) have been experimentally and numerically investigated. The GR-Ts with different free-space length ratios (SR = s/D = 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0) and tooth numbers (N = 8, 16 and 24), were experimentally tested under constant wall heat flux in turbulent flow (Reynolds numbers from 6000 to 20,000). Air was used as the working fluid. The behaviors in a plain tube and the tube with a conventional ring turbulators (N = 0) were also studied for comparison. The results show that utilizing tubes with GR-Ts leads to the increases of heat transfer coefficient and pressure loss as compared to those associated with the use of a plain tube. Heat transfer enhancement and friction increase with decreasing free-space length ratio (SR) and tooth number (N). Among the investigated inserts, the conventional ring turbulators (N = 0) with free-space length ratio, SR = 1.0 give the highest heat transfer rate and friction factor at 2.7 times and 15.5 times of those of the plain tube. However, the maximum thermal performance factor of 1.3 is obtained by using the GR-Ts with the largest free-space length ratio and maximum tooth number (SR = 3.0 and N = 24). At SR = 3.0, the GR-Ts with tooth numbers (N) of 0, 8, 16 and 24 yield thermal performance factors up to 1.24, 1.26, 1.28 and 1.3, respectively. The numerical results are given for a better understanding of flow and heat transfer characteristics associated with the use of GR-Ts. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Thermohydraulic characteristics of co/counter swirl flow through a round tube fitted with helical screw tape and twisted tape(2013-03-01) ;Eiamsa-Ard, S. ;Yongsiri, K. ;Nanan, K.Influence of co/counter swirl flow on the characteristics of friction, heat transfer and thermal performance factor in heat exchanger tubes has been experimentally investigated. Each twisted tape is inserted into a helical screw tape and then these combined tapes are subsequently equipped in a heat exchanger tube for generating the swirl flow. The combined tapes are arranged in two different forms, namely (i) co-swirl arrangement in which their twist are in the same direction and (ii) counter-swirl arrangement in which their twists directions are in the opposite directions. The experiments using helical tapes alone are also performed for assessment. The helical screw tapes are used at three different tape-twist ratios (PR = p/D = 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0), each with three different tape-width ratios (WR = w/D = 0.15, 0.2 and 0.25), while twisted tapes are used at three different twist ratios (YR = y/W = 3, 4 and 5). The results show the maximum thermal performance factor of 1.49 for helical tape alone with PR=2.0 and WR=0.2. At similar conditions, the heat transfer rate associated with the combined tapes in counter-swirl arrangement is 3.4% and 10% higher than those in co-swirl arrangement and helical tape alone. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Heat transfer enhancement in a tube using delta-winglet twisted tape inserts(2010-03-01) ;Eiamsa-ard, S. ;Wongcharee, K. ;Eiamsa-ard, P.Heat transfer, flow friction and thermal performance factor characteristics in a tube fitted with delta-winglet twisted tape, using water as working fluid are investigated experimentally. Influences of the oblique delta-winglet twisted tape (O-DWT) and straight delta-winglet twisted tape (S-DWT) arrangements are also described. The experiments are conducted using the tapes with three twist ratios (y/w = 3, 4 and 5) and three depth of wing cut ratios (DR = d/w = 0.11, 0.21 and 0.32) over a Reynolds number range of 3000-27,000 in a uniform wall heat flux tube. The obtained results show that mean Nusselt number and mean friction factor in the tube with the delta-winglet twisted tape increase with decreasing twisted ratio (y/w) and increasing depth of wing cut ratio (DR). It is also observed that the O-DWT is more effective turbulator giving higher heat transfer coefficient than the S-DWT. Over the range considered, Nusselt number, friction factor and thermal performance factor in a tube with the O-DWT are, respectively, 1.04-1.64, 1.09-1.95, and 1.05-1.13 times of those in the tube with typical twisted tape (TT). Empirical correlations for predicting Nusselt number and friction factor have been employed. The predicted data are within ±10% for Nusselt number and ±10% for friction factor. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Item type:Publication, Experimental investigation of heat transfer and flow friction in a circular tube fitted with regularly spaced twisted tape elements(2006-12-01) ;Eiamsa-ard, Smith; Experimental investigation of heat transfer and friction factor characteristics in a double pipe heat exchanger fitted with regularly spaced twisted tape elements, were studied. The inner and outer diameters of the inner tube are 50.6 and 25.8 mm, respectively and cold and hot water were used as working fluids in shell side and tube side. The twisted tapes were made of the stainless steel strip with thickness of 1 mm and the length of 1500 mm. They were inserted in the test tube section in two different cases: (1) full-length typical twisted tape at different twisted ratios (y = 6.0 and 8.0), and (2) twisted tape with various free space ratios (S = 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0). The results, obtained from the tube with twisted tape insert, were compared with those without twisted tape. The results show that the heat transfer coefficient increased with twist ratio (y). Whereas the increase in the free space ratio (S) would improve both the heat transfer coefficient and friction factor. The results from each case were correlated for Nusselt number and friction factor. Subsequently, the predicted Nusselt number and friction factor from the correlations were plotted to compare with the experimental data. It was found that Nusselt number was within ± 15% and ± 10% for friction factor. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Parametric study on thermal performance augmentation of TiO2/water nanofluids flowing a tube contained with dual counter twisted-tapes(2024-07-01); ;Wongcharee, K. ;Kunnarak, K. ;Chokphoemphun, S.Chamoli, S.The study of compound heat transfer enhancement technique using dual counter twisted tapes (DCTs) together with TiO<inf>2</inf>/water nanofluids was carried out. The dual twisted tapes in form of counter-swirl tape arrangement were utilized at three twist ratios (y/w = 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5). TiO<inf>2</inf>/water nanofluids having three different volume concentrations (φ = 0.05, 0.10 and 0.15 %) were employed as the testing fluids. The results indicated that heat transfer rate, friction factor and thermal enhancement index rose with decreasing tape twisted ratio and elevating nanofluid concentration. The TiO<inf>2</inf>/water nanofluids applied in the present work offered higher Nu than pure water (the base fluid) by 7.3–10.0 %. The application of DCT with the smallest y/w of 1.5 and TiO<inf>2</inf>/water nanofluids with the largest φ of 0.15 vol% led to the highest thermal enhancement index (TEI) of 1.53, under the same pumping power criteria. Additionally, the k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) and artificial neural network (ANN) were developed to predict the thermal enhancement index (TEI). It was found that the k-NN and ANN models provided maximum R2 values of 0.919 and 0.992 f, respectively. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Effect of perforated twisted-tapes with parallel wings on heat transfer enhancement in a heat exchanger tube(2012-01-01); ;Eiamsa-Ard, P.; Eiamsa-Ard, S.This article reports an experimental investigation on heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of turbulent flow in a heating tube equipped with perforated twisted tapes with parallel wings (PTT) for Reynolds number between 5500 and 20500. The design of PTT involves the following concepts: (1) wings induce an extra turbulence near tube wall and thus efficiently disrupt a thermal boundary layer (2) holes existing along a core tube, diminish pressure loss within the tube. The parameters investigated were the hole diameter ratio (d/W = 0.11, 0.33 and 0.55) and wing depth ratio (w/W = 0.11, 0.22 and 0.33). A typical twisted tape was also tested for an assessment. Compared to the plain tube, the tubes with PTT and TT yielded heat transfer enhancement up to 208% and 190%, respectively. The evaluation of overall performance under the same pumping power reveal that the PTT with d/W = 0.11 and w/W = 0.33, gave the maximum thermal performance factor of 1.32, at Reynolds number of 5500. Empirical correlations of the heat transfer, friction factor and thermal performance for tubes with PTTs were also developed. In addition, the swirling/axial flow patterns of tube with PTT were visualized using dye injection technique. © 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
