    Experimental investigation of heat transfer and friction factor behaviors in a rectangular channel with multiple twisted tapes (MTTs) is carried out. In each run, five MTTs are simultaneously used as the swirl flow generators in a test section. The lower wall of the channel is subjected to uniform heat flux conditions while the upper wall is insulated. Parametric runs are made for Reynolds numbers ranging from 2700 to 9000, the tapes with twist-length to twist-width ratios (y/w) of 3, 4 and 5 while the aspect ratio of AR = W/H = 10 is fixed throughout. Experiments using smooth channel are also performed for comparison. The experimental results reveal that heat transfer in the channels with MTTs at twist ratios (y/w) of 3, 4 and 5 are respectively increased around 55%, 37% and 22% over those in the smooth channel. In addition, the empirical correlations of the Nusselt number and friction factor in the developed flow region for the channels fitted with MTTs are also derived.

    The paper deals with a numerical study on the effect of inclined elliptical ring (IER) on heat transfer augmentation in a uniform heat-fluxed heat exchanger tube. In the present work, the 60° IER was mounted repeatedly in the tube with six different eccentricity ratios (E<inf>R</inf> = b/a = 1, 0.9, 0.8, 0.7, 0.6 and 0.5) at a single ring-pitch ratio P<inf>R</inf> = 1.0. Air as the test fluid flows into the tube for Reynolds number ranging from 4000 to 20,000. To find the optimum thermal performance, the effect of E<inf>R</inf> values on the heat transfer and pressure loss is investigated. The study indicates that the use of IER can induce higher turbulent intensity imparted to the flow leading to higher heat transfer in range of about 237 to 461% above the smooth tube.

    This article reports an experimental investigation on heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of turbulent flow in a heating tube equipped with perforated twisted tapes with parallel wings (PTT) for Reynolds number between 5500 and 20500. The design of PTT involves the following concepts: (1) wings induce an extra turbulence near tube wall and thus efficiently disrupt a thermal boundary layer (2) holes existing along a core tube, diminish pressure loss within the tube. The parameters investigated were the hole diameter ratio (d/W = 0.11, 0.33 and 0.55) and wing depth ratio (w/W = 0.11, 0.22 and 0.33). A typical twisted tape was also tested for an assessment. Compared to the plain tube, the tubes with PTT and TT yielded heat transfer enhancement up to 208% and 190%, respectively. The evaluation of overall performance under the same pumping power reveal that the PTT with d/W = 0.11 and w/W = 0.33, gave the maximum thermal performance factor of 1.32, at Reynolds number of 5500. Empirical correlations of the heat transfer, friction factor and thermal performance for tubes with PTTs were also developed. In addition, the swirling/axial flow patterns of tube with PTT were visualized using dye injection technique. © 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

    Drying kinetic of peppercorns in a rectangular fluidized-bed with wavy surfaces
    (2010-01-01) ;

    ;
    The paper presents the comparative study of drying peppercorns in a rectangular fluidized-bed and a rectangular fluidized-bed with wavy surfaces. This experimental work has been carried out in two different drying bed configurations: rectangular bed and rectangular bed with wavy surface (called "wavy surface bed"). The wavy surface bed is used to produce a stronger turbulence flow inside. For each run of both beds, inlet hot air at 80°C is used for drying peppercorns with initial moisture content at about 82.5% w.b. The inlet air velocity is adjusted to be 1.0Umf, 1.1Umf and 1.3Umf (Umf= minimum fluidization velocity of peppercorns) as desired. Drying time and weight of peppercorns are measured in 5 minute intervals for 120 minutes for each run. The experimental results show that in the rectangular bed, the peppercorns show low oscillating and it becomes dense bed. This causes low heat transfer rate between peppercorns and hot air leading to slower mass transfer of moisture in the peppercorns. In the wavy surface bed, the peppercorns has high fluctuations due to unsymmetrical flow in the bed creating a sustainable oscillating flow with stronger turbulence of hot air and it causes dilute bed, resulting in higher heat and mass transfer in peppercorns. Closer examination reveals that for a similar operating condition, the rectangular wavy surface bed performs better than the rectangular bed.

    A numerical study is conducted to investigate the turbulent periodic flow and heat transfer characteristics in a channel fitted with sinusoidal wavy-baffles placed on upper and lower walls. The finite volume method is introduced and implemented with the SIMPLE algorithm. The flow structure, friction factor and heat transfer characteristics for different wavy-baffle configurations are evaluated. According to numerical result, the maximum thermal performance is found to be 1.22–1.66 times to smooth channel corresponding to the baffle a/H=0.75 and b/H=0.10. Consequently, the application of wavy-baffles can be utilized effectively to enhance the thermal performance of solar air heater.

    This paper describes an experimental study of turbulent convective heat transfer and flow friction characteristics in a double tube heat exchanger equipped with propellers (2 blade-type). The propellers are used as the decaying swirl generators in the inner tube. The experiments were performed using the propellers with four different interval lengths (1 = 1D, 2D, 3D and 4D where D is diameter of the inner tube), for the Reynolds number ranging from 5000 to 32,000, using water with temperature of 27°C and 70°C as cold and hot working fluids, respectively. The data of the tube equipped with the propellers are reported together with those of the plain tube, for comparison. The obtained results demonstrate that the heat transfer rate in term of Nusselt number (Nu) and friction factor (f) in the tube with propellers are higher than those in the plain tube at the similar operating conditions. This is due to the chaotic mixing and efficient interruption of thermal boundary layer caused by the propellers. In addition, the Nusselt number and friction factor in the tube fitted with the propellers increase as the interval length decreases. Depending on Reynolds number and interval length, Nusselt numbers and friction factors in the tube fitted with the propellers are augmented to 1.95 to 2.3 times and 5.8 to 13.2 times of those in the plain tube. In addition, the correlations of the Nusselt number (Nu) and the friction factor (f) for tube fitted with the propellers are reported and the performance evaluation to access the real benefits of using the turbulators is also determined. © 2010 by ASME.

    The present paper reports heat transfer enhancement and friction factor characteristics in the tubes inserted with rectangular-winged twisted-tapes (TT-RWs). The wing-depth ratio (d/W) was varied from 0.1 to 0.3 while the tape-twist ratio was kept constant at y/W = 4.0. The experiments were conducted under uniform heat flux condition for Reynolds number between 5500 and 20,200 (based on the inner diameter, D), using water as the working fluid. The tubes with typical twisted tape (TT) and twisted tape with alternate-axis (TA) as well as a plain tube were also tested for assessment. The obtained results demonstrate that the utilization of the tubes with TT-RWs leads to the increases of both Nusselt number and friction compared to those from the uses of the tubes with TT, TA and the plain tube. In addition, Nusselt number increases as a wing-depth ratio of the twisted tape increases. The improvement of Nusselt number is directly related to the superior destruction of the boundary layer which is responsible by the stronger swirl flow and turbulence intensity. According to the results, the TT-RW with d/W = 0.3 yields the highest Nusselt number which is around 100% higher than that of the plain tube, corresponding to the thermal performance factor of 1.36 at constant pumping power. © 2011 IEEE.

    In this present work, the influences of the porous twisted tape (PT) on the heat transfer and the pressure loss are studied experimentally. The comparative experiments are conducted in the tube fitted with the PT or typical twisted tape (TT) at different twist ratios, y/w = 4.0 and 5.0, in the Reynolds number ranging from 4800 to 16,000 under uniform heat flux conditions. In the experiments, the PT inserts generate swirls that modify the near wall velocity profile resulted in improvement of the heat transfer rate. The experimental results reveal that the heat transfer rates increase with decreasing twist ratio (y/w) for all twisted tapes used in the experiments. The heat transfer rates increase up to 71% with the help of the PT. The increases in average Nusselt numbers of using PT and TT are found to be 48% and 22%, respectively, over those of the corresponding plain tube. However, PT causes a considerable increase in friction factor. The mean increases of friction factors for PT and TT are respectively, about 3.14 and 2.45 times in comparison with that for the plain tube. Mean friction factor and Nusselt number for PT, are respectively 28% and 21% higher than those for TT. In addition, the empirical correlations of the Nusselt number and friction factor are also reported.

    Performance improvement in a tubular heat exchanger by punched delta-winglet vortex generators

    A novel tubular heat exchanger incorporated with punched delta-winglet vortex generators (called perforated delta-winglet vortex generator, P-DWVG) is proposed for improving its thermal performance and energy saving. The P-DWVG elements are punched out from a straight tape having its width nearly equal to the tube diameter before insertion. The main aim at employing the P-DWVG insert is to produce counter-rotating vortices along the tube to promote turbulence intensity inside as well as to transport the cold fluid at the central core to the near-wall regions. The experiment was performed to study thermal behaviors in a uniform heat-fluxed tube inserted with P-DWVGs. The P-DWVGs with the attack angle of 45° were mounted periodically with three different blockage ratios (B<inf>R</inf> = 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) and two pitch ratios (P<inf>R</inf> = 2 and 3). Air as the test fluid was varied to obtain turbulent airflow for Reynolds number (Re) in a range of 4,150-25,500. The experimental results show that the P-DWVG provides a considerable increase in the rate of heat transfer around 3.1-4.01 times whereas friction factor increases around 11.44- 34.23 times higher than the plain tube. To assess the real benefits of P-DWVGs, thermal performance factor (TEF) is examined and in the range of 1.39-1.48 where its maximum is at B<inf>R</inf> = 0.1 and P<inf>R</inf> = 2.
