    Modeling of a quadratic buck converter
    (2011-08-12)
    Karaket, Ketsuda
    ;
    A quadratic buck converter, whose voltage conversion ratio equals square of a duty cycle, has good potential in DC-DC converter applications where a large voltage step-down is required, such as in modern automobile. This paper presents dynamic modeling of a quadratic buck converter with the State-Space averaging (SSA) technique. The SSA modeling leads to a small-signal linear dynamic model of the converter, from which the transfer functions used for feedback control design can be determined. Results are presented to verify accuracy of the obtained model. © 2011 IEEE.

    This paper presents a parallel voltage controller to improve the output dynamic performance of a buck converter with Average Current Mode Control (ACMC). The parallel controller is a high-order controller synthesized from parallel connection of the two basic controllers. It is proposed to compensate the control-to-output transfer function of the converter, which has multiple poles and zeros. Up until now, the task is commonly performed by the two-pole one-zero controller, which is clearly not adequate and has somewhat limited the dynamic performance of the converter. In the paper, the design of parallel controller is illustrated with a 5V/2V ACMC buck converter. Experimental and simulated results that show the improvement of output voltage response to a step load change are presented. © 2010 IEEE.

    In consumer electronic products, there is a high demand for an off-line low-power Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS). Applications invariably require the SMPS be small, lightweight, reliable, and low cost. This paper presents the design of a low-cost flyback converter to power a TV set top box. To reduce costs, the conventional output feedback circuit using an opto-coupler is removed and replaced by the feedback circuit using an auxiliary winding of the flyback transformer. This feedback technique is literally called Primary Side Regulation (PSR). In the PSR, the output regulation performance largely depends on good coupling between the secondary and auxiliary windings. The paper considers two transformer winding methods and their impacts on output voltage regulation are compared. Experimental results are provided to verify the output performance given by each winding technique.

    This paper presents design and evaluation of a Quadratic Buck Converter (QBC). A step-by-step procedure to select the converter's component values and semiconductor device ratings is demonstrated. A prototype QBC with a simple closed loop output voltage control is constructed and experimentally evaluated. It is shown that the converter performs well within the design specification, has good output voltage regulation and fast transient response, and achieves the highest efficiency of 82%.

    Two-phase induction motor drive improvement for PV water pumping system
    (2017-01-30)

    ;
    \n recent years, solar energy sources have been widely utilized, especially in PV water pumping system. Single-phase induction motors (SPIM) are the most common type of motor used in PV pumping application. Reliable operation, low cost and low maintenance are the main advantages of SPIM. However, SPIM have an inherent problem of low efficiency at low speeds, which can be overcome by the adoption of two-phase induction motors (TPIM). This paper proposes a new speed control method for the TPIM used in PV water pumping system. The TPIM is supplied with unbalanced two-phase voltages generated by the inverter that employs the carrier-based SVPWM switching strategy. The V/F control is incorporated to realize variable speed operation. The motor reference speed is set to be proportional to the power generated by the PV array. As a result, the motor speed always tracks power fluctuation of the PV array, leading to improved system efficiency. The validity of the proposed method is verified by simulation results.

    ;
    This paper proposes a transformerless solid-state fault current limiter composed of multiple cells of single-phase bridge controlled rectifier with DC reactor and an AC reactor connected in parallel with cascaded rectifier cells performing current limiting in steady state. The proposed fault current limiter can be used in medium-voltage power system without power transformer so the system is more compact. With modular design of each rectifier cell, the construction and maintenance of the system could also be simplified. In this paper, the circuit designs, the computer simulation and the construction of the solid-state fault current limiter prototype are presented. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed fault current limiter can operate properly.

    A conventional forward converter requires a transformer having an extra winding to assist in magnetic core reset, thus complicating the design and increasing the production cost. These shortcomings can be overcome by using an RCD clamp forward converter. This article presents a simplified analysis and design of the RCD clamp forward converter. The laboratory prototype is constructed. Experimental results demonstrates that the prototype converter is capable of providing a constant output voltage throughout its operating condition and has the maximum efficiency of 85%.

    The short-range wireless multimedia is consider used a ultra wideband (UWB) technology for human body mobile and multimedia applications shows promise for wireless multi-media systems. Based on IEEE 802.15.6, wireless body area networks (BAN) require understanding the human body’s effects on channel characteristics. This paper presents how to evaluation of human body ulra-wideband (HB-UWB) transmission with line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight scenario. Our research aims to enhance HB-UWB channel propagation on the body media by employing with CLEAN algorithm to eliminate noise. This research leverage findings from previous studies to facilitate performance comparison. Furthermore, for analyze system performance using the CLEAN algorithm at different body positions. The measurement setup covers band the FCC regulated from 3.0 GHz to 11 GHz. It includes the tested with wideband antenna and vector network analyzer (VNA). HB-UWB characteristics are shows in the path loss and power delay profile are discussed as relevant parameters. This research very useful for design and evaluation of human body mobile network and wireless multimedia systems.

    Feedback compensator design for a two-switch forward converter
    (2012-12-01)

    ;
    Advantages of a two-switch forward converter over its single-switch counterpart are that it operates with reduced voltage stress on power semiconductor switches and does not require a transformer with a reset winding. The lower stress on the switching devices leads to increased reliability and, without the reset windings, the transformer production is simplified. In this paper, feedback compensator design for a two-switch forward converter is presented. A Proportional-plus-Integral (PI) compensator is chosen for its simplicity. Experimental results confirm that the properly designed PI compensator is capable of providing the satisfying output voltage regulation and transient response. © 2012 IEEE.

    In recent years, an application of a piezoelectric transducer to harvest energy from ambient vibrations has been a subject of intense research. As the material technology advances, the amount of energy being able to produce by the transducer continues to increase. This paper presents an experimental study of a vibration based energy harvesting system for an RFID module. The system consists of a piezoelectric transducer, a power management circuit based on a buck converter, and an RFID module. The transducer converts mechanical movement produced by a finger press into a voltage to charge an input capacitor. The buck converter then converts the input capacitor voltage into a stable DC output voltage to power the RFID module. Experimental results are presented to validate the performance of the proposed energy harvesting system.
