    Stabilization of power system using improved virtual inertia of virtual synchronous generator
    (2022-01-01)
    Poungdokmai, Aditap
    ;
    The renewable energy source (RES) based distributed generation (DG) has grown up rapidly that causing a reduction inertia and instability of power system. To support the increased RES, grid connected inverters require improved control schemes. Therefore, Virtual synchronous generator is getting attention. VSG is a control scheme applied for distributed generating (DG) that controls virtual rotational synchronous generator and enhances stability of power system. However, VSG has some issues when grid frequency fluctuations occur, which can cause the steady-state active power output deviation. It can be solved by analyzing closed loop transfer function of power output. The steady-state power deviation is caused by damping coefficient in the swing equation of the VSG. Thus, power deviation is decreased by set damping coefficients to zero and adding differential compensation to control dynamic characteristic instead of damping coefficients. By adding differential compensation, we can control dynamic characteristics without steady-state power output deviation in weak grid.

    This paper presents a parallel voltage controller to improve the output dynamic performance of a buck converter with Average Current Mode Control (ACMC). The parallel controller is a high-order controller synthesized from parallel connection of the two basic controllers. It is proposed to compensate the control-to-output transfer function of the converter, which has multiple poles and zeros. Up until now, the task is commonly performed by the two-pole one-zero controller, which is clearly not adequate and has somewhat limited the dynamic performance of the converter. In the paper, the design of parallel controller is illustrated with a 5V/2V ACMC buck converter. Experimental and simulated results that show the improvement of output voltage response to a step load change are presented. © 2010 IEEE.

    This paper presents series arc fault detection in low voltage ac circuit using Rogowski coil d/dt sensor. Series arc faults are simulated with various types of loads and current levels to understand the characteristic of arcing signal pattern and level. The Rogowski coil is designed to be able to detect high frequency di/dt component of the arc signal. The experimental results clearly show that by detecting the high frequency component of the di/dt, series arc fault condition can be reliably detected.

    ;
    In a microgrid, electric generation is based on combination of small generators and renewable resources such as solar and wind. The operating conditions of the microgrid are dynamically altered by both the load and the intermittent nature of the renewable resources. To maintain the voltage and frequency stability of such microgrid, this paper presents distributed cooperative control of a microgrid using multi-agent system. The multi-agent system is implemented by using Mobile-C based on Client-Server architecture, and Ch and Embedded Ch as the agents run time. Serial communication is implemented for data exchange between agents and microgrid elements. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed control system, two scenarios have been experimented. The experimental results demonstrate the generator connecting/disconnecting and load shedding ability of the microgrid.

    ;
    This paper proposes a transformerless solid-state fault current limiter composed of multiple cells of single-phase bridge controlled rectifier with DC reactor and an AC reactor connected in parallel with cascaded rectifier cells performing current limiting in steady state. The proposed fault current limiter can be used in medium-voltage power system without power transformer so the system is more compact. With modular design of each rectifier cell, the construction and maintenance of the system could also be simplified. In this paper, the circuit designs, the computer simulation and the construction of the solid-state fault current limiter prototype are presented. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed fault current limiter can operate properly.

    The efficiency improvement of series connected PV panels operating under partial shading condition by using per-panel DC/DC converter
    (2011-08-12)
    Saranrom, Wuttichai
    ;
    The influence of partial shading on series connected photovoltaic (PV) panels lowers the energy yield of the PV power generating system. It causes multiple maximum power points (MPPs) on the power-voltage (P-V) characteristic of a PV string connecting to a converter/inverter unit. With conventional maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm, the controller may track a local MPP, instead of the global one, resulting in a reduction of output power of the PV system. Even if the MPPT techniques may be able to track the global MPP, the resultant output power obtained always less than the summation of the allowable maximum power of independent PV panels operating under the same condition. The aims of this paper are to study and propose the method which uses a concept of individual DC/DC converters per panel in order to improve the performance of the PV power generating system operating under partial shading condition. Matlab/Simulink simulation is conducted to show the efficiency improvement of the proposed system. © 2011 IEEE.

    ;
    In micro and small hydro power plants, the flow and head of the water fluctuate seasonally. The torque-speed characteristic of hydro turbine requires variable speed operation of generator to always obtain maximum power generation. This paper presents variable speed control of a permanent magnet synchronous generator and maximum power point tracking for small hydro power plant. The INC-like maximum power point tracking algorithm is proposed and implemented. The experimental results validate the proposed algorithm. However the speed fluctuations are observed and have to be addressed in future study.

    A microgrid is a new paradigm of power grid which has triggered advancement toward a green, intelligent and power efficiency. Due to the intermittent nature of microgrid's resources and the unpredictable power demand, the microgrid's voltage and frequency may experience deviation. Therefore, the decentralized control which could provide a faster response is a must. In this paper, the decentralized hierarchical control is implemented to handle the microgrid issues and enhance the power quality. The first level deals with power sharing between parallel generator. The frequency restoration and energy storage control are implemented in the second level to handle the frequency deviation which results from the high integration of PV. The third level is based on the multiagent system to ensure supply-demand balancing, autonomous decision-making and real-time energy monitoring. A laboratory scale microgrid is build up to verify the proposed control. The experimental results prove the effectiveness of the proposed control throughout various operating condition.

    Power and Phase Current Balancing Technique for Bidirectional Cascade Three-Phase CLLLC Resonant Converters
    (2025-01-01)
    Kowi, Prachaya
    ;
    This paper presents an interleaved configuration of bidirectional cascade three-phase CLLLC resonant converters (BCTRC) topology. The proposed approach reduces the high-voltage transformer turns ratio, minimizes input/output current ripple, and improves current sharing across MOSFETs and power balance among converters, thereby lowering device stress and extending the system's lifespan. In practice, component tolerances lead to resonant parameter mismatches, resulting in phase current imbalance and unequal high-side voltage sharing. To overcome this, a fundamental voltage control (FVC) method is employed for power balancing, while trigonometric current balancing (TCB) is used to equalize phase currents. Simulation results confirm that the combination of FVC and TCB achieves the lowest unbalanced coefficient (U<inf>f</inf>) decreasing from 8.36% to 2.93% and reduces the power sharing error (PSE), decreasing from 9.78% to 0.24% in the forward case. In the reverse case U<inf>f</inf> decreases from 9.37% to 1.62%, while PSE is reduced from 9.66% to 0.58%. Furthermore, the proposed method equalizes the high-side voltages and maintains zero voltage switching (ZVS) under both forward and reverse power flow conditions.

    Comparison of Extended Kalman Filter and Long Short-Term Memory Neural Network for State of Charge Estimation of Lithium-Ion Battery
    (2023-01-01)
    Rupanwong, Kritayod

    ;
    The state of charge (SoC) estimation for lithium-ion batteries is an essential function of the battery management system (BMS) for ensuring reliable operation of electric vehicles. The nonlinear behavior of the battery makes estimating of SoC a challenging task. In this paper, SoC estimation based on model-based and data-driven methodology are implemented and compared. In the case of model-based estimation, static OCV-SOC test, AC impedance measurement and system identification technique are utilized to obtain accurate third order equivalent circuit model of the battery. Subsequently, SoC was estimated using Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). In the case of data-driven estimation, long short-Term memory recurrent neural network (LSTM-RNN) is adopted. The Input that fed into the network are terminal voltage and current, while output is SoC. The training set is WLTP Class 3 driving cycle, and the test set is WLTP Class 2 driving cycle. The performance of state estimation based on EKF and LSTM-RNN is evaluated through the RMSE. Considering only the accuracy of estimation, the SoC estimation using EKF is more accurate than LSTM-RNN, demonstrating the effectiveness of model-based state estimation.
