    Effect of molasses and fermented juice of epiphytic lactic acid bacteria on the fermentation characteristics and nutrient compositions of cassava leaves silage

    Molasses and fermented juice of epiphytic lactic acid bacteria (FJLB) addition improved the quality of cassava leaves silage; however their effect depends on the types of forages ensiled. Thus, this study was aimed to compare the effect of molasses and FJLB additives on the fermentation characteristics and nutrient compositions of cassava leaves silage. Cassava leaves were chopped into pieces of 1-2 cm length before ensiling. The molasses 5% (w/w) and FJLB 1% (v/w) of fresh material were added as silage additives. As the measurement, the physical characteristics, chemical compositions, nutritive values, organic acid concentrations, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) count, volatile based nitrogen (VBN) and V-score of experimental silages were determined. In general, the physical characteristics and nutritive values of molasses and FJLB silages were not significantly different (p>0.05), however crude protein and fibre contents of FJLB silage were significantly higher (p<0.05) than molasses silage. Inversely, total carbohydrate and non fibre carbohydrate contents of molasses silage were also greater (p<0.05) than FJLB silage, resulted the higher feed intake in molasses silage. The acetic acid and propionic acid concentrations were greater (p<0.05) in molasses silage, whereas the higher (p<0.05) LAB count was found in FJLB silage. Regarding the indicators for good quality silage, VBN and V-score, both FJLB and molasses silages possessed the parameters for good quality silages.     This study was conducted to determine the effect of fermented juice of epiphytic lactic acid bacteria (FJLB) and molasses addition on the fermentation characteristics and nutrient compositions of sorghum silage. Sorghums were chopped into pieces of 1-2 cm length and molasses 5% (w/w) and FJLB 1% (v/w) of fresh material were added as silage additives. No significant effects on physical characteristics except pH, lowest in molasses silage, were noted. The higher organic matter and lower fibre contents were observed in molasses silage. Total carbohydrate, non fibre carbohydrate, total digestible nutrients, digestible dry matter and dry matter intake were highest in molasses silage. The higher acetic, propionic and lactic acid concentrations were observed in FJLB silage. The lactic acid bacteria (LAB) count was highest in FJLB silage, and lowest in control silage. The low volatile based nitrogen (VBN) and high V-score, indicators of good quality silages, were generally observed in molasses and FJLB rather than control silages. This experiment indicated that FJLB can be alternatively used as additive instead of using molasses in sorghum silage; however more inclusion level of molasses and FJLB should be used to ensure good quality silage.

    Chemical composition and diversity of lactic acid bacteria in Guinea grass based silages

    Ensilage is considered that widespread among conserving method of fodder crops. The successes of this process depend on bacteria in lactic acid bacteria (LAB) group as existing in forage crops. The chemical composition and diversity of lactic acid bacteria in silages based on guinea grass was investigated. Result showed that the silages contained 62.55 to 76.47% moisture, 23.53 to 37.45% dry matter (DM) and 6.11 to 15.74% ash. Groundnut silage (T3) showed the lowest crude fiber (CF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) contents. Two hundred and eighty-two isolates of LAB were isolated from five silage formula based on guinea grass supplementation with either lead tree leaves or groundnut. Most of isolates were gram-positive and catalase-negative bacteria. Based on morphological characteristics and PCR-RAPD analysis, the isolates were divided into 21 groups (Guinea Grass Mixed Legume Silage (GMLS) 1 to GMLS21). The phylogenetic relation of the representative strains was analyzed from the data of 16S ribosomal DNA sequencing. Prevalent of LAB found in the silages included Lactobacillus plantarum, Pediococcus acidilactici, Pediococcus pentosaceus, Enterococcus hirae, and Weissella paramesenteroides. L. plantarum was a dominant population and found distribution in all silage formula. This study revealed that the silage samples, including guinea grass, lead tree and groundnut contain mainly of L. plantarum. The information obtained can be used for the anterior design of reasonable inoculants for improvement of silage quality for cattle feed.

    The effect of adding mung bean meal supplementation on Napier Pakchong 1 silage on fermentation quality and nutrient composition

    The effect of mung bean meal supplementation on Napier Pakchong 1 silage on fermentation quality and nutritional value was investigated. The results found that pH of all treatments of mung bean meals on Napier Pakchong 1 silage ranges from 4.17-4.73 was the lowest value found in the treatment 1 whereas highest value found in the treatment 6 (P<0.01). When volatile basic nitrogen (VBN) in silage was recorded, the VBN in the ailage of the treatment 5 had the highest value (35.56%) and followed by that of the treatment 6 (32.98%) while the lowest VBN found in the silage of the treatment 1 (8.57%) (P<0.01). Moreover, the silage in the treatment 6 was the highest nutritional proportion by increasing dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE) and gross energy (GE), while decreasing ash, neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) (P<0.01). Thus, making silage by adding mung bean meals on Napier Pakchong 1 could improve nutritional value of silage in term of increasing DM, CP, EE and GE contents, but decreasing contents of ash, NDF and ADF. In addition, making silage from Napier Pakchong 1 grass by replacing mung bean meal at 10-20% could be applicable for preserving ruminant roughage.

    Effect of feeding sunflower meal on the performance and carcass characteristics of broiler chickens

    The objective of the experiment was to evaluate the effect of feeding sunflower meal on the performance and carcass characteristics of broiler chickens. A total of six hundred day-old male Arbor Acre chicks were allotted to a completely randomized experimental design. There were four levels of 0%, 4%, 8%, and 12% sunflower meal with five replicates each for forty-two days trial. The inclusion of different concentrations of sunflower meal did not alter the productive performance of the birds. There were not significant differences in body weight, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, mortality, and the European Production Efficiency Factor (E.P.E.F.) index among the experimental groups (P≥0.05). During 22-42 days of trial, the inclusion of 12 % sunflower meal was the highest in feed intake but it was only significant differences between the inclusion of 8 % sunflower meal group (p<0.05). However, the inclusion of 12 % sunflower meal had higher feed intake and mortality than the other groups for the whole period of trial (p>0.05). The E.P.E.F. index were 299.76, 320.25, 343.22, and 298.90 for the birds fed with 0 %, 4 %, 8 %, and 12 %, of sunflower meal in the diet, respectively. The inclusion of sunflower meal from 4 %, 8 %, and 12 % had no effect on carcass percentage and cut yield of broilers.     Using leucaena to improve the quality of pineapple plant silage

    The objective of this study was to improve the quality of pineapple plant silage by leucaena supplementation and using it as roughage during the shortage of green forages. There were 5 treatments as follows :- 1. Pineapple plant 100%, 2. pineapple plants mixed with leucaena 5%, 3. pineapple plants mixed with leucaena 10%, 4. Pineapple plants mixed with leucaena 15% and 5. grass 100%. The Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four replications each was used in this experiment. All treatments were put in 1%NaCL<inf>2</inf> and tightly sealed in plastic containers. They were stored at room temperature for 21 days. The silage treatments were evaluated on physical characteristics, chemical composition and fibre analysis. The physical characteristic showed that the color of treatment 1 was a yellow green color, a good characteristic of silage. For treatments 2, 3 and 4 there was a light brown color. Treatment 5 was a dark brown in color. The aromas of all silage treatments were aromatic and acidic like pickled fruit. The evaluation of chemical composition showed a highly significant difference among the treatment groups (p < 0.01). Treatment 4 was the highest in protein and metabolizable energy percentage with the averages of 8.19% and 3,697.17 kcal/k, respectively. The percentage of crude fibre was reduced with the increase of leucaena in the silage. Treatment 5 was the highest in crude fibre. The pineapple plant silage mixed with leucaena could improve the quality of silage for ruminants.
