Item type:Publication, A Comparative Assessment of Life-Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Hypothetical Electric Airport Transportation Services in Thailand(2018-05-22)Global warming is an increase of average temperature in the atmosphere, which causes adverse effects on the environment. Carbon dioxide (CO<inf>2</inf>) from transportation sector is one of the main contributors of the overall greenhouse gases (GHG). To cope with this issue, electric car services are increasingly seen as popular alternative modes of green transportation especially for urban cities as it is more flexible, more environmentally-friendly, and less expensive than the use of conventional vehicles. The study analyses and compare the hypothetical electric car systems from airport transportation services. Center of Environmental Science of Leiden University (CML) 2001, the Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) method, is applied to convert life cycle inventory data into environmental impacts. The observed results showed that the electric shuttle bus had the highest impact in global warming potential (GWP) compared to other transportation types. Alternatively, this Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study that evaluated different transportations provided important information for decision makers on quantifying the differences between each scenario. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Energy efficiency and environmental impact analysis in grocery store market in Canada(2018-01-01)There is growing pressure to limit Global Warming Potential (GWP) as it is the most significant way to reduce serious threats to people. The increase of average temperature in the atmosphere causes adverse effects on the environment, and this is changing the way business operates. Together with undergoing changes to be more environmentally friendly, the majority of business sectors has been launching many projects to reduce environmental impacts. Similar to grocery sector in Canada, many companies have been reported to investigate the environmental performance. Loblaw Companies Limited, the largest food distributors in Canada, has put more concerns on environmental impacts and worked diligently to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through actions such as improving energy efficiency reducing refrigerant leaks, and incorporating renewable energy sources. This study analyzed Loblaw's energy efficiency and environmental performance and provided suggestions in the applications of skylight improvement, geothermal, refrigeration systems, kinetic energy to electricity, and e-grocery shopping. The results showed that the environmental concerns were substantially decreased. However, types of lights and refrigerators, distance driven, vehicle types, fuel used in e-grocery shopping results in the different amount of emissions; consequently, the GHG emissions varied depending on these factors. By integrating more environmentally technology, Loblaw could further reduce their emissions and waste and become a more sustainable company. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Greenhouse gas emissions comparison of solid waste transportation system: A case study in Thailand(2020-01-27); Hamontree, C.During the early periods of civilization, solid waste was conveniently collected transported and disposed because of the low number of population. However, waste generation is expected to increase becasue of rapid population growth and consequently shows an increase in solid waste collection, transportation, and disposal. Waste transportation planning is a difficult task due to the issues of the increasing numbers of garbage vehicles and the fluctuation of fuel prices as well as the cost-effectiveness and health and environmental impacts. An unsustainable waste collection and transportation is heading towards a variety of indirect human health impacts. Accordingly, the vehicle routing problem (VRP) plays a significant role in the field of waste collection and transportation system. This study compares three different Life Cycle Assessment (LCA approaches for the waste transport in Ladkrabang, Bangkok, Thailand. The three scenarios are modelled using GaBi 7 software tool and results are presented based on the CML 2001. The assessment outcomes indicated that the routing optimization with diesel and electric garbage trucks could significantly reduce the GWP impact by 8.51% and 66.44% compared to the baseline scenario, respectively. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Business viability and carbon footprint of Thai-grown Nam Dok Mai mango powdered drink mix(2020-05-01); ;Riensuwarn, Fonthong ;Palungpaiboon, PenpichaThis research analyzes the business feasibility of freeze-dried powdered drink mix from Thai-grown Nam Dok Mai (NDM) mango for exportation to the United States. Since food processing generates large quantities of greenhouse gas emissions which contribute to global warming, the cradle-to-grave environmental impact of the mango powdered mix, specifically global warming potential (GWP), was determined using life cycle assessment. Based on the feasibility analysis, the mango powdered mix is thus positioned as a novelty for health-conscious and environmentally-concerned consumers because the product uses NDM mango fruits of premium quality as the main ingredient and carries a carbon footprint label on the packaging. A 50 g sachet of freeze-dried NDM mango powdered drink mix is priced at USD 7.80. The financial analysis showed that the mango drink mix possesses great business potential with high profitability. The environmental impact assessment identified the freeze drying process as the dominant contributor of GWP (15.40 kgCO<inf>2</inf>eq) due to high electricity consumption. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Preliminary Life Cycle Analysis of Greenhouse Gas Emissions at Transportation Phase of a Beverage Drink for Green Logistics(2021-05-12); ;Riensuwarn, Fonthong ;Palungpaiboon, PenpichaAs the transportation sector is one of the main emitters of large quantities of pollutions to the atmosphere, industries have been trying to cope with this issue and launch many campaigns or projects to reduce air pollutions. In any industries around the world, an electric vehicle is a part of alternative transportation mode which has recently experienced considerable growth. The paper aims to evaluate energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the food sector for the entire life cycle and particularly focusing on green road transportation. The focus of the analysis covers the mango powder drink mix transportation, distribution, and disposal aspects, especially for road transportation. The observed results showed that the electric vehicles have emissions reduction potential and consequently showed low impacts in Global Warming Potential (GWP) impact category. The environmental impact assessment identified that the primary source of energy use and GHG emissions was the transportation process from Hong Keaw plantation to King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) (0.025 kgCO2eq). - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Resource Scheduling Problem in Distribution Center(2019-10-25) ;Hamontree, C. ;Prompakdee, S.Due to the rapid growth of the retail shop trend recently, the Distribution Center (DC) or warehouse had become to be a vital part in the supply chain in order to store goods from multiple suppliers and deliver to multiple retailers. Cross docking is a relatively the logistics technique used in the DC in order to move materials from inbound trailers to outbound trailers as quickly as possible. From the following problem, an ineffectual DC management leads to the resources utilization problem such as machine, forklift, industrial trucks, etc. The main objective of this research is to study and solve the scheduling problem of the usage of the forklift in the Cross docking of DC and to manage the inbound and outbound docks in order to minimize Tardiness jobs, and also to maximize the efficiency of machine utilization. This study has provided the scheduling, comparison from genetic algorithm and heuristic method. Item type:Publication, Carbon Footprint Assessment of Food Waste Disposal Methods in a Thai Hypermarket’s Fresh Food Department(2026-04-01); ; ; ;Filimonau, ViachaslauThe global urgency to mitigate environmental degradation and promote sustainable resource use necessitates effective waste management strategies, particularly in the retail sector, which is a significant contributor to food waste. This study explores the carbon ramifications of food waste disposal methods within a hypermarket’s fresh food department in Bangkok, Thailand. Using the method of life cycle assessment (LCA) under the CML2001 framework, this study evaluates three food waste management methods: anaerobic digestion (AD), sanitary landfill, and mechanical and biological waste treatment (MBT). The analysis is structured to quantify the carbon footprint associated with each waste management strategy, measured in kilograms (kg) of carbon dioxide (CO<inf>2</inf>) equivalent (eq.) per kg of food waste. The estimated carbon footprint is 0.0066 kg CO<inf>2</inf> eq./kg of food waste for MBT, 0.1221 kg CO<inf>2</inf> eq./kg of food waste for AD, and 1.4667 kg CO<inf>2</inf> eq./kg of food waste for sanitary landfill. These values were derived from defined system boundaries, modeling assumptions, and available operational data used to construct the life cycle inventory (LCI). In addition, a formal sensitivity analysis was not conducted in this study. Item type:Publication, Stakeholder collaboration for solid waste management in a small tourism island(2023-07-01); Filimonau, ViachaslauAlthough stakeholder collaboration is key for sustainable development of tourism in small islands, research on its determinants is only emerging. The lack of empirical studies hampers an understanding of how effective stakeholder partnerships for sustainability in small tourism islands can be formed and sustained. To partially address this knowledge gap, this study explores stakeholder collaboration for solid waste management in the island of Koh Phayam, Thailand, from the perspective of stakeholder theory, social capital and proximity effect. Semi-structured interviews (n = 26) reveal a lack of understanding of collaboration benefits alongside leadership and reciprocity among stakeholders. However, due to geographical proximity, the level of stakeholder trust in each other is significant, thus indicating potential for future successful partnerships. For these partnerships to become effective, a system of financial incentives for stakeholders to separate and recycle solid waste in situ should be designed. To improve stakeholder communication and reciprocity, capacity building workshops and round tables can be organised. Municipal authorities should lead on solid waste management, and a steering committee comprising the representatives of all other stakeholders needs to be established to oversee the work of municipal authorities. Lastly, the feasibility of setting private public partnerships for solid waste management in Koh Phayam should be considered given the significant extent of knowledge and trust among local stakeholders. External stakeholders, such as farmers, can be involved in management of organic waste, thus extending the scope of partnerships for sustainability beyond the island. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Carbon footprint assessment of home-stays in Thailand(2021-01-01); Filimonau, ViachaslauHome-stays represent a popular category of tourist accommodation in South-East Asia but their carbon footprint has not been systematically assessed. This hampers an understanding of the energy consumption patterns of home-stays, impedes identification of the main carbon hotspots in home-stay operations and prevents a comparative analysis of the carbon performance of home-stays against other tourist accommodation categories. Using the method of screening Life Cycle Energy Analysis (LCEA), this study assessed the carbon footprint of a sample of home-stays in Thailand and undertook its comparative analysis against other categories of tourist accommodation, globally and in Thailand. The overall annual carbon footprint of home-stays was assessed as low (1.3 tonnes of CO<inf>2</inf>-eq. per home-stay on average) which was due to small size and limited guest amenities. The ‘per guest night’ carbon footprint of home-stays was comparable to that of budget hotels in Thailand (0.32 kg of CO<inf>2</inf>-eq. per home-stay on average) which was attributed to low occupancy driven by high demand seasonality. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, ‘Wasting food is normal!’: How food waste can become the (new) norm in casual dining restaurants(2025-03-01); Filimonau, ViachaslauFood waste is a major societal challenge, and hospitality and foodservice organisations make a significant contribution to its occurrence. Although research on food waste in these organisations is emerging, there remains a limited understanding of the underlying reasons behind managerial inaction on its mitigation. This mixed methods study employs neutralization theory, specifically the concept of normalization of deviance, to examine the sociological impediments of effective food waste mitigation among managers of casual dining restaurants in Bangkok, Thailand (n = 17). The findings delineate the process of how food waste can become perceived by managers as a norm and outline the factors contributing to this normalization, namely repeated personal observations of food waste generation, peer reports and media influence. By understanding the determinants of managerial disengagement with food waste mitigation, the study outlines potential interventions exemplified by the design of educational campaigns, regular food waste audits, set-up of corporate goals on food waste reduction and changes to how food waste is presented in the media.
