    n-LIPO: Framework for Diverse Cooperative Agent Generation Using Policy Compatibility

    Diverse training partners in multiagent tasks are crucial for training a robust and adaptable cooperative agent. Prior methods often rely on state-action information to diversify partners’ behaviors, but this can lead to minor variations instead of diverse behaviors and solutions. We address this limitation by introducing a novel training objective based on “policy compatibility.” Our method learns diverse behaviors by encouraging agents within a team to be compatible with each other while being incompatible with agents from other teams. We theoretically prove that incompatible policies are inherently dissimilar, allowing us to use policy compatibility as a proxy for diversity. We call this method learning incompatible policies for n -player cooperative games (n-LIPO). We propose to further diversify individual policies by incorporating a mutual information objective using state-action information. We empirically demonstrate that n-LIPO effectively generates diverse joint policies in various two-player and multi-player cooperative environments. In a complex cooperative task, two-player multi-recipe Overcooked, we find that n-LIPO generates a population of behaviorally diverse partners. These populations are then used to train robust generalist agents that can generalize better than using baseline populations. Finally, we demonstrate that n-LIPO can be applied to a high-dimensional StarCraft multiagent challenge (SMAC) multiplayer cooperative environment to discover diverse winning strategies when only a single goal exists.

    A longitudinal examination of collaboration diversity among communication scholars: 1990–2023

    This study examines racial diversity in co-authorship in articles published in communication journals and its association with citations accrued over time. We analyzed 76,217 publications from 73 communication journals, spanning from 1990 to 2023, with a focus on racial diversity in authorship as an indicator of collaboration diversity. Our results reveal that diversity is positively associated with the number of citations received, with this positive effect increasing over time. In addition, non-White lead authors collaborated more diversely, whereas White authors exhibited a faster increase in collaboration diversity over the years. Furthermore, the positive association between collaboration diversity and citations was more pronounced when the lead author was non-White than when White. Additional analyses show a concerning disparity: While non-White first authors are equally likely as their White counterparts to publish in top journals, they receive significantly fewer citations.

    Physicochemical, Nutritional, and Antioxidant Properties of Traditionally Fermented Thai Vegetables: A Promising Functional Plant-Based Food

    Fermented plant-based products were gathered from various regions in Thailand and categorized into 10 types of traditional commercial vegetables. Different vegetable materials and natural fermentation methods influence the diverse physical, chemical, nutritional, and functional attributes of the products. All the traditionally fermented Thai vegetable samples collected showed physicochemical properties associated with the fermentation process, contributing to the nutritional and functional quality of the final products. Achieving consistent research results is challenging due to the intricate nature of food matrices and biochemical processes during fermentation. The roles of microorganisms, especially probiotics, are crucial in delivering health benefits through fermented foods. Traditionally fermented Thai vegetable foods contain high levels of total soluble solids, titratable acidity, and salinity in pickled shallot and ginger as a result of the natural fermentation process and the ingredients used. The research findings were confirmed using a hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA)-derived dendrogram pattern. The nutritional compositions, total phenolic contents, and antioxidant activities varied among the different types of vegetables. The correlations among lipid, protein, fiber, total soluble solid (TSSs), total titratable acidity (TTA), and salinity as potential biomarkers in fermented vegetable products were examined. The results suggest that traditionally fermented Thai vegetable products significantly impacted food research by enhancing the quality and preserving the authenticity of traditionally fermented Thai vegetables.

    Applying Inclusive Design and Digital Storytelling to Facilitate Cultural Tourism: A Review and Initial Framework

    This article aims to review and identify key challenges and opportunities in the interrelationship between cultural tourism, inclusive design, and digital storytelling fields. The literature review included searching Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar for three main field keywords, drawing 421 articles between 1990 and 2022. Content analysis was applied to literature findings and five categories with twenty-three themes emerged accordingly: (1) issues in cultural tourism; (2) diversity in museums; (3) inclusive design in museums; (4) motivation in museums; and (5) digital storytelling in museums. The article further discusses the nuanced relationship between these three fields and proposes an initial framework to help future growth of cultural tourism through increasing visitors’ motivation and diversity. As such, the work aims to facilitate cultural tourism as an activity that better reflects the diversity of its potential audiences and proactively addresses their needs, requirements and interests.

    Diversity Methods for Mitigating Tropospheric Attenuation in Thailand for Future Satellite Communication

    This paper aimed to propose diversity method for mitigating tropospheric attenuation in Thailand. Thailand experiences one of the strongest satellite attenuation conditions in the world. Three kinds of data - cloud calculation data, thaicom2&3 satellite beacon data, and rainfall data - indicate how severe tropospheric attenuation is at a moment, calling for some diversity methods to be applied Thailand's attenuation data to increase the efficiency of future satellite communication in Thailand, especially at high Ka band frequency and above.

    A comprehensive analysis of parameter settings for novelty-biased cumulative gain

    In the TREC Web Diversity track, novelty-biased cumulative gain (α-NDCG) is one of the official measures to assess retrieval performance of IR systems. The measure is characterised by a parameter, α, the effect of which has not been thoroughly investigated. We find that common settings of α, i.e. α=0.5, may prevent the measure from behaving as desired when evaluating result diversification. This is because it excessively penalises systems that cover many intents while it rewards those that redundantly cover only few intents. This issue is crucial since it highly influences systems at top ranks. We revisit our previously proposed threshold, suggesting α be set on a query-basis. The intuitiveness of the measure is then studied by examining actual rankings from TREC 09-10 Web track submissions. By varying α according to our query-based threshold, the discriminative power of α-NDCG is not harmed and in fact, our approach improves α-NDCG's robustness. Experimental results show that the threshold for α can turn the measure to be more intuitive than using its common settings. © 2012 ACM.
