    Flexible AC transmission systems are used for enhancing the stability, transmission efficiency, and reliability of AC grids. Additionally, the most cost-effective devices for compensating reactive power are Mechanically Switched Capacitors (MSCs). This study proposes a novel algorithm for detection and capacitor bank switching transient signals in MSC, to prevent the protective relay maloperation by these transients. The Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is used for effective time-frequency analysis and detection of measured three-phase current signals. DWT extracts the detailed wavelet coefficients of current signals at levels 1 to 30. In addition, the fuzzy inference system (FIS) has been used to determine the type of switching transient. The proposed combination of FIS and DWT has been tested on 230 kV substation and the result demonstrated precision for the identification and classification of both transient signals in MSC with 88% accuracy rate.

    SOH- and Temperature-Aware Adaptive SOC Boundaries for Second-Life Li-Ion Batteries in Off-Grid PV–BESSs
    (2026-02-01)

    ;
    In this study, an adaptive state-of-charge (SOC) boundary strategy (ASBS) is proposed that dynamically adjusts the admissible upper and lower SOC limits of second-life lithium-ion batteries in off-grid photovoltaic battery energy storage systems (PV-BESSs) based on real-time state of health (SOH) and temperature feedback. The strategy is formulated using a unified electrical–thermal–aging model with an online state estimator and ensures both electrical safety and power feasibility while remaining fully compatible with standard energy management functions. Two representative simulations—a single-day operating profile and a continuous thirty-day sequence—demonstrate the effectiveness of the ASBS. In the twenty-four-hour case, the duration spent in high state-of-charge conditions is reduced by approximately 0.30–0.50 h, the abrupt end-of-charging transition is eliminated, and the temperature rise is slightly moderated, all without any loss of energy supply. Over thirty days, the difference between the ASBS and a fixed state-of-charge window remains effectively zero for almost all hours, with only a brief midday deviation of −4 to −5 percentage points and no cumulative drift. Indicators of electrical and thermal stress improve substantially, including an approximate 70% reduction in the root mean square charging current. These results confirm that the ASBS provides a practical and non-intrusive means of mitigating stress on second-life lithium-ion batteries while preserving full energy autonomy in off-grid photovoltaic systems.

    This study investigates the financial and operational feasibility of deploying electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure within high-density residential buildings, utilizing empirical operational data combined with comprehensive financial modeling. A 14-day monitoring period conducted at a residential complex comprising 958 units revealed distinct charging behaviors, with demand peaking during weekday evenings between 19:00 and 22:00 and displaying more dispersed yet lower overall utilization during weekends. Energy efficiency emerged as a significant operational constraint, as standby power consumption contributed substantially to total energy losses. Specifically, while total energy consumption reached 248.342 kW, only 138.24 kW were directly delivered to users, underscoring the necessity for energy-efficient hardware and intelligent load management systems to minimize idle consumption. The financial analysis identified pricing as the most critical determinant of project viability. Under current cost structures, financial break-even was attainable only at a profit margin of 0.2286 USD (8 THB) per kWh, while lower margins resulted in persistent financial deficits. Sensitivity analysis further demonstrated the considerable vulnerability of the project’s financial performance to small fluctuations in profit share and utilization rate. A 10% reduction in either parameter entirely eliminated the project’s ability to reach payback, while variations in energy costs, capital expenditures (CAPEX), and operational expenditures (OPEX) exerted comparatively limited influence. These findings emphasize the importance of precise demand forecasting, adaptive pricing strategies, and proactive government intervention to mitigate financial risks associated with residential EV charging deployment. Policy measures such as capital subsidies, technical regulations, and transparent pricing frameworks are essential to incentivize private sector investment and support sustainable expansion of EV infrastructure in residential sectors.

    Investigating the feasibility of nano-grid infrastructure integration into street lighting systems based on energy production and economic evaluation
    To enhance efficient and sustainable energy usage in street lighting systems, a nano-grid infrastructure comprising an energy harvesting, storage, and management system is integrated. This paper investigated the feasibility in terms of energy production and economic evaluation of using various energy harvesting for photovoltaic, piezoelectric, and wind energy in a nano-grid street lighting system. The photovoltaic system was evaluated based on the factors of annual actual solar radiation, power losses, and system performance using the PVsyst software. The piezoelectric energy production was studied and designed. Optimal piezoelectric installation for maximum power generation was analyzed in terms of deformation and stress using ANSYS software. For wind power generation, the wind turbine characteristics, along with its location, were designed to optimize power output using computational fluid dynamic simulations in ANSYS software. After that, economic evaluation for the proposed energy harvesting systems for nano-grid street lighting system are analyzed and compared in terms of DPP, NPV, IRR, and LCOE. In addition, the optimization of using PV, a wind system, a hybrid PV—wind system for nano-grid street lighting systems was conducted using HOMER Pro software. The results indicated that generating power through PV, piezoelectric, and wind energy was feasible. However, economic evaluation unveiled the infeasibility of employing piezoelectric and wind energy systems due to their elevated investment costs relative to their power generation capabilities. The dynamics of power generation from PV and wind systems, along with street lighting consumption, significantly impacted the dimensions of energy harvesting and storage systems, as well as their economic feasibility. The hybrid PV-wind system exhibited strong economic feasibility.

    Economic Analysis of Improving the Energy Efficiency of Nanogrid Solar Road Lighting Using Adaptive Lighting Control
    (2020-01-01)

    ;
    This paper presents a road lighting control system that uses a light-dependent resistor sensor cooperating with an Internet protocol camera to the lower energy consumption during unnecessary use of a lighting system. A microcontroller was used as a control circuit to automatically control the brightness of a light-emitting diode (LED) luminaire, increasing or decreasing the brightness depending on traffic density. The proposed lighting control system was integrated into a nanogrid solar road lighting system and analysed through an experimental setup. Furthermore, nanogrid solar road lighting systems in LED solar stand-alone and grid-connected operations, with and without the proposed lighting control, were investigated and compared with a conventional existing road lighting system in terms of economic feasibility, based on the following indicators: discounted payback period, net present value, internal rate of return, and profitability index. The results indicate that the use of the Internet protocol camera with the LED sensor can automatically control the on/off state or illuminance levels of the LED luminaire, thereby lowering the energy consumption of the road lighting system when lighting is not required. The economic assessment results indicate that the nanogrid solar road lighting system in LED solar stand-alone and grid-connected road lighting modes exhibit feasibility for investment; the latter provides more economic feasibility. However, when the proposed lighting control is included, the nanogrid solar road lighting system in both modes have lower initial investment costs and save more energy. Consequently, the economic results are improved. The use of the proposed lighting control is thus economically feasible for road lighting systems.

    Capacitor banks are widely used in modern power systems for reactive power compensation and voltage regulation. However, switching operations of mechanically switched capacitors (MSCs) can generate transient phenomena, such as inrush currents, which may resemble fault currents and lead to misoperation of protection systems. Therefore, accurate detection and classification of transient events are essential for reliable system operation. This study proposes a hybrid approach for transient signal analysis and classification by integrating the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) with artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, including probabilistic neural networks and fuzzy inference systems (FIS). The DWT performs time–frequency analysis to extract multi-scale wavelet features from three-phase current signals. The proposed method enables both discrimination between inrush and fault currents and multi-class classification of transient events among six capacitor switching conditions, namely base case, pre-insertion resistor, pre-insertion inductor, current limiting reactor, 6% reactor, and synchronous closing. The methodology is validated using PSCAD/EMTDC simulations under isolated and back-to-back capacitor switching scenarios. The results demonstrate that the proposed DWT–AI approach achieves high classification accuracy exceeding 95%, outperforming conventional methods based on DWT alone and DWT combined with FIS. Furthermore, the proposed method improves protection system performance by reducing false tripping caused by transient inrush currents, while maintaining reliable fault detection capability. The findings confirm that integrating time–frequency signal processing with AI-based classification provides an effective and practical solution for transient event discrimination in MSC capacitor bank systems.

    Faults in the distribution system of the Thai electrical system occur frequently. Such faults directly affect the protective equipment of the distribution system. The protective device disconnects the circuit unnecessarily on many occasions because it detects a higher current than expected. In this study, a 22-kV distribution system and a very small power plant (VSPP) were connected. The system consists of two feeders. Feeder 1 supplies electricity directly to the load; a fault was enforced in this feeder. Feeder 2 supplies electricity directly to the load; the VSPP was connected to this feeder. The fault in Feeder 1 was simulated, and the behavior of the defense system was studied. Unnecessary disconnection of the VSPP circuit took place because the high fault current caused the overcurrent protection relay to operate instantaneously. Therefore, a neutral ground resistance was installed at the VSPP transformer to reduce the fault current, extend the relay operating time to the delay range, and reduce unnecessary disconnections of the overcurrent protection relay of the VSPP. In addition, when a fault occurs in the distribution system, the faulted phase voltage decreases, whereas the non-faulted phase voltage increases. Surge arresters and voltage transformers must be able to withstand an increase in voltage. This is also explained and discussed in this paper.

    In Thailand, numerous small-scale public facilities continue to rely on the electrical grid. The integration of renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic (PV) and wind power offers a sustainable alternative; however, their inherent intermittency necessitates advanced solutions such as nanogrid systems, which enable localized energy generation, storage, and management to enhance reliability and autonomy. This study develops a nanogrid-based energy management system for Hua Takhe train station, Thailand, by integrating photovoltaic (PV) panels, wind turbines, and battery energy storage systems (BESS). Using HOMER Pro, multiple configurations were simulated and evaluated across key financial indicators, including Payback Period (PB), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), Return on Investment (ROI), Net Present Value (NPV), and Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE). The analysis framework further incorporates economic feasibility evaluation, sensitivity and scenario analysis, and long-term performance and life cycle evaluation, thereby ensuring that both short-term financial viability and long-term sustainability are comprehensively assessed. Results show that PV-dominant nanogrid systems, particularly at larger scales, represent the most practical and cost-effective pathway for sustainable electrification of public facilities in Thailand. The 30PV Nanogrid achieves the most favorable balance between cost and performance, with a NPV of 23,925 USD, a LCOE of 0.04 USD/kWh, a PB of 7 years, an IRR of 13 %, and a ROI of 215 % under long-term life-cycle evaluation. In comparison, the 15PV Nanogrid proves economically marginal, with NPV falling to –9117 USD, PB extending beyond 20 years, IRR turning negative (–5 %), and ROI declining to –40 %, confirming that small-scale nanogrids cannot offset the costs of ESS and hybrid inverters.

    The high voltage capacitor bank is a critical component in substations, essential for maintaining power quality and system stability. However, these banks are susceptible to faults and inrush currents, posing significant operational challenges. This paper presents a method for accurately classifying fault and inrush currents in high voltage capacitor banks using Fuzzy Logic and Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). The DWT decomposes current waveforms into frequency components, enabling the extraction of features that characterize faults and inrush currents. These features are processed by a Fuzzy Inference System (FIS), which classifies the events based on predefined rules and membership functions. The integration of DWT and FIS provides a robust framework for distinguishing between different types of faults and inrush currents with high accuracy. Simulation results demonstrate the proposed method's efficacy, showing improved performance in classification accuracy and noise robustness compared to traditional techniques. This research enhances monitoring and protection systems in power networks, ensuring more reliable operation of high voltage capacitor banks. Implementing this method allows for better fault management and minimized downtime, leading to improved overall system efficiency and stability.

    Impact on Protective Device Sequence of Operation in Case Distributed Generation Integrated to Distribution System
    (2023-07-01) ;

    ;
    This study aims to evaluate the impact of the distributed generator (DG) connection to the grid. The simulated results present the parameters of the system required to install DG on the end of the main distribution feeder. Various parameters, such as voltage, current, and protective relay coordination are modelled after the actual provincial electricity authority (PEA) distribution system. Various case studies compared the coordination without and with DG connections to the grid by finding the difference of protective devices. The results indicate that the malfunction can be fixed in order of priority protective devices, which operate according to the parameter setting. Additionally, the coordinate functions between the recloser and fuse devices in both phase and ground configurations in the operating zone prevented the drop-out fuse melting or burning out. Based on the result, this problem is fixed by providing a directional recloser device and increasing the fuse-link rated with 40k installation for replacing the conventional sizing, which can improve the performance in case of fault occurrence to investigate the reliability and stability of the distribution system.
