Item type:Publication, Heat transfer enhancement in a rectangular channel with twisted tape inserts(2009-01-01) ;Nuthong, W. ;Eiamsa-Ard, S. ;Nanan, K. ;Eiamsa-Ard, P.Experimental investigation of heat transfer and friction factor behaviors in a rectangular channel with multiple twisted tapes (MTTs) is carried out. In each run, five MTTs are simultaneously used as the swirl flow generators in a test section. The lower wall of the channel is subjected to uniform heat flux conditions while the upper wall is insulated. Parametric runs are made for Reynolds numbers ranging from 2700 to 9000, the tapes with twist-length to twist-width ratios (y/w) of 3, 4 and 5 while the aspect ratio of AR = W/H = 10 is fixed throughout. Experiments using smooth channel are also performed for comparison. The experimental results reveal that heat transfer in the channels with MTTs at twist ratios (y/w) of 3, 4 and 5 are respectively increased around 55%, 37% and 22% over those in the smooth channel. In addition, the empirical correlations of the Nusselt number and friction factor in the developed flow region for the channels fitted with MTTs are also derived. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Numerical heat transfer study of square duct equipped with novel flapped V-baffles(2024-03-01); ; ;Skullong, Sompol ;Promthaisong, PitakNakhchi, Mahdi ErfanianThe paper describes a computational study of heat transfer enhancement inside a square duct with V-shaped flapped baffles located repeatedly on the bottom and top walls for fluid flowing with Reynolds numbers (Re) from 3000 to 21,000. The basic goal of this work is to attain the largest relative Nusselt number (Nu/Nu<inf>0</inf>) whilst maintaining the highest thermal performance to improve energy savings. A finite volume method was used in the computations, along with the Realizable k‒ε turbulent model. The variable baffle parameters considered first in the current simulation were the relative height/blockade ratio (B<inf>R</inf> = 0.05−0.2) and the flap angle of the baffle hole (β = 0° − 90°), while the fixed parameters included the attack angle (α = 60°), hole diameter ratio (d<inf>R</inf> = 0.5), and pitch ratio (P<inf>R</inf> = 0.5). To accomplish this goal, the previously mentioned parameters providing the best thermal performance were investigated further by extending the values of B<inf>R</inf> to 0.25−0.3, d<inf>R</inf> to 0.8 and α to 45°−30°. The simulation results indicate that the jet flowing from the flapped hole, as well as the vortices created by the baffle, can boost heat transfer and friction loss in comparison to the plain duct. In comparison, using a flapped baffle with β > 0° results in less friction loss, a greater thermal enhancement factor (TEF), and a higher Nusselt number than using a baffle with no flap. The first investigation disclosed that for B<inf>R</inf> = 0.2 and β = 20°, the greatest TEF of 2.19 with Nu/Nu<inf>0</inf> of 7.9 times are obtained. The extended study, on the other hand, showed that the highest TEF of roughly 2.49 with Nu/Nu<inf>0</inf> of 8.4 times are seen for α = 45°, d<inf>R</inf> = 0.8, B<inf>R</inf> = 0.25 and β = 20° at lowest Re. Thus, the flapped baffle provides a significant increase in Nu/Nu<inf>0</inf> and TEF over the baffle alone. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Thermal characterization in a circular tube fitted with inclined horseshoe baffles(2015-01-22); ;Tamna, Sombat; In the present study, the influence of inclined horseshoes baffles placed repeatedly in a tubular heat exchanger on heat transfer rate, friction factor and thermal enhancement factor are experimentally determined. The horseshoe baffle elements with an inclination angle of 20° were inserted periodically into the test tube at three different baffle-pitch ratios (P<inf>R</inf> = 0.5, 1.0 and 2) and -width or blockage ratios (B<inf>R</inf> = 0.1, 0.15 and 0.2). The experiment was conducted in the test tube having a uniform heat-fluxed wall by varying turbulent airflow to obtain Reynolds number in a range of 5300-24,000. The experimental results revealed that the tube fitted with inclined horseshoes baffles provides considerable improvement of the heat transfer rate over the plain tube around 92-208% while the friction factor is increased at about 1.76-6.37 times. To access the real benefits for the inclined horseshoes baffles inserted in plain tube, thermal performance factor is examined and found to be in the range of 1.34-1.92 at which the maximum obtained at P<inf>R</inf> = 0.5 and B<inf>R</inf> = 0.1 is considerably higher than that for published inserted devices. Correlations for Nusselt number and friction factor for the oblique horseshoe-baffled tube are also proposed. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Compound heat transfer enhancement of a dimpled tube with a twisted tape swirl generator(2009-08-01); ;Eiamsa-ard, Petpices ;Wongcharee, KhwanchitEiamsa-ard, SmithFriction and compound heat transfer behaviors in a dimpled tube fitted with a twisted tape swirl generator are investigated experimentally using air as working fluid. The effects of the pitch and twist ratio on the average heat transfer coefficient and the pressure loss are determined in a circular tube with the fully developed flow for the Reynolds number in the range of 12,000 to 44,000. The experiments are performed using two dimpled tubes with different pitch ratios of dimpled surfaces (PR = 0.7 and 1.0) and three twisted tapes with three different twist ratios (y/w = 3, 5, and 7). Experiments using plain tube and dimpled tube acting alone are also carried out for comparison. The experimental results reveal that both heat transfer coefficient and friction factor in the dimpled tube fitted with the twisted tape, are higher than those in the dimple tube acting alone and plain tube. It is also found that the heat transfer coefficient and friction factor in the combined devices increase as the pitch ratio (PR) and twist ratio (y/w) decrease. In addition, an empirical correlation based on the experimental results of the present study is sufficiently accurate for prediction the heat transfer (Nu) and friction factor (f) behaviors. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Item type:Publication, Turbulent flow heat transfer and pressure loss in a double pipe heat exchanger with louvered strip inserts(2008-02-01) ;Eiamsa-ard, Smith ;Pethkool, Somsak; In the present work, heat transfer and friction characteristics were experimentally investigated, employing louvered strips inserted in a concentric tube heat exchanger. The louvered strip was inserted into the tube to generate turbulent flow which helped to increase the heat transfer rate of the tube. The flow rate of the tube was in a range of Reynolds number between 6000 and 42,000. The turbulent flow devices were consisted of (1) the louvered strips with forward or backward arrangements, and (2) the louvered strip with various inclined angles (θ = 15°, 25° and 30°), inserted in the inner tube of the heat exchanger. In the experiment, hot water was flowed through the inner tube whereas cold water was flowed in the annulus. The experimental data obtained were compared with those from plain tubes of published data. Experimental results confirmed that the use of louvered strips leads to a higher heat transfer rate over the plain tube. The increases in average Nusselt number and friction loss for the inclined forward louvered strip were 284% and 413% while those for the backward louvered strip were 263% and 233% over the plain tube, respectively. In addition, the use of the louvered strip with backward arrangement leads to better overall enhancement ratio than that with forward arrangement around 9% to 24%. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Item type:Publication, Heat transfer enhancement in a tube using delta-winglet twisted tape inserts(2010-03-01) ;Eiamsa-ard, S. ;Wongcharee, K. ;Eiamsa-ard, P.Heat transfer, flow friction and thermal performance factor characteristics in a tube fitted with delta-winglet twisted tape, using water as working fluid are investigated experimentally. Influences of the oblique delta-winglet twisted tape (O-DWT) and straight delta-winglet twisted tape (S-DWT) arrangements are also described. The experiments are conducted using the tapes with three twist ratios (y/w = 3, 4 and 5) and three depth of wing cut ratios (DR = d/w = 0.11, 0.21 and 0.32) over a Reynolds number range of 3000-27,000 in a uniform wall heat flux tube. The obtained results show that mean Nusselt number and mean friction factor in the tube with the delta-winglet twisted tape increase with decreasing twisted ratio (y/w) and increasing depth of wing cut ratio (DR). It is also observed that the O-DWT is more effective turbulator giving higher heat transfer coefficient than the S-DWT. Over the range considered, Nusselt number, friction factor and thermal performance factor in a tube with the O-DWT are, respectively, 1.04-1.64, 1.09-1.95, and 1.05-1.13 times of those in the tube with typical twisted tape (TT). Empirical correlations for predicting Nusselt number and friction factor have been employed. The predicted data are within ±10% for Nusselt number and ±10% for friction factor. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Item type:Publication, Turbulent heat transfer enhancement by counter/co-swirling flow in a tube fitted with twin twisted tapes(2010-01-01) ;Eiamsa-ard, S.; Eiamsa-ard, P.In the present study, the influences of twin-counter/co-twisted tapes (counter/co-swirl tape) on heat transfer rate (Nu), friction factor (f) and thermal enhancement index (η) are experimentally determined. The twin counter twisted tapes (CTs) are used as counter-swirl flow generators while twin co-twisted tapes (CoTs) are used as co-swirl flow generators in a test section. The tests are conducted using the CTs and CoTs with four different twist ratios (y/w = 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0) for Reynolds numbers range between 3700 and 21,000 under uniform heat flux conditions. The experiments using the single twisted tape (ST) are also performed under similar operation test conditions, for comparison. The experimental results demonstrate that Nusselt number (Nu), friction factor (f) and thermal enhancement index (η) increase with decreasing twist ratio (y/w). The results also show that the CTs are more efficient than the CoTs for heat transfer enhancement. In the range of the present work, heat transfer rates in the tube fitted with the CTs are around 12.5-44.5% and 17.8-50% higher than those with the CoTs and ST, respectively. The maximum thermal enhancement indices (η) obtained at the constant pumping power by the CTs with y/w = 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0, are 1.39, 1.24, 1.12 and 1.03, respectively, while those obtained by using the CoTs with the same range of y/w are 1.1, 1.03, 0.97 and 0.92, respectively. In addition, the empirical correlations of the heat transfer (Nu), friction factor (f) and thermal enhancement index (η) are also reported. © 2009 Elsevier Inc. Item type:Publication, Heat transfer augmentation in a helical-ribbed tube with double twisted tape inserts(2012-08-01); ;Pethkool, Somsak; Turbulent convective heat transfer characteristics in a helical-ribbed tube fitted with twin twisted tapes have been investigated experimentally. The experiment was carried out in a double tube heat exchanger using the helical-ribbed tube having a single rib-height to tube-diameter ratio, e/D <inf>H</inf>=0.06 and rib-pitch to diameter ratio, P/D <inf>H</inf>=0.27 as the tested section. The insertion of the double twisted tapes with twist ratio, Y, in the range of 2.17 to 9.39 is to create vortex flows inside the tube. The inserted ribbed tube is arranged in similar directions of the helical swirl of the twisted tape and the helical rib motion of the tube (called co-swirl). Effects of the co-swirl motion of the ribbed tube and the double twisted tapes with various twist ratios on heat transfer and friction characteristics are examined. The results obtained from the ribbed tube and the twin twisted tape insert are compared with those from the smooth tube and the ribbed tube acting alone. The experimental results reveal that the co-swirling inserted tube performs much better than the ribbed/smooth tube alone at a similar operating condition. The co-swirl tube at Y≈8 yields the highest thermal performance at lower Reynolds number (Re). In addition, the correlations of Nusselt number and friction factor as functions of Re, Pr and Y are also proposed. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Thermal characteristics in a heat exchanger tube fitted with dual twisted tape elements in tandem(2010-01-01) ;Eiamsa-ard, Smith; ;Eiamsa-ard, PetpicesThe paper presents a comparative investigation of enhanced heat transfer and pressure loss by insertion of single twisted tape, full-length dual and regularly-spaced dual twisted tapes as swirl generators, in a round tube under axially uniform wall heat flux (UHF) conditions. The investigation encompassed the Reynolds number based on the inlet tube diameter (D) ranging from 4000 to 19,000. The experiments are performed using single twisted tapes and full-length dual twisted tapes with three different twist ratios (y/w = 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0) and also regularly-spaced dual twisted tapes with three different space ratios (s/D = 0.75, 1.5 and 2.25). The effects of major parameters on heat transfer and friction factor are discussed and the results from both single and dual twisted tape inserts are compared with those from the plain tube. The result shows that the heat transfer of the tube with dual twisted tapes is higher than that of the plain tube with/without single twisted tape insert. For both single twisted tape and full-length dual twisted tapes, Nusselt number (Nu) and friction factor (f) tend to increase with decreasing twist ratio (y/w). The average Nusselt number and friction factor in the tube fitted with the full-length dual twisted tapes at y/w = 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0, are respectively 146%, 135% and 128%; and 2.56, 2.17 and 1.95 times of those in the plain tube. For the regularly-spaced dual twisted tapes, the heat transfer rate is decreased with increasing space ratio (s/D). The average Nusselt numbers in the tube fitted with the regularly-spaced dual twisted tapes (s/D) of 0.75, 1.5 and 2.25 are respectively, 140%, 137% and 133% of that in the plain tube. With the similar trend mentioned above, all dual twisted tapes with free spacing yield lower heat transfer enhancement in comparison with the full-length dual twisted tapes (s/D = 0.0). © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Item type:Publication, Evaluation of aerothermal performance of a round tube with regularly-spaced multi-channel twisted tape elements installed(2024-06-01) ;Phila, Arnut; ; ;Bhattacharyya, SuvanjanNaphon, PaisarnThis article presents a study of aerothermal performance of tubes with regularly-spaced multi-channel twisted tape elements (RS-MTT) installed. This research aimed to find the proper design RS-MTTs that induce swirl flow which potentially improves fluid mixing between the core fluid and the fluid near the tube wall, thereby accelerating the heat transfer rate. Additionally, the effects of Reynolds numbers and free-spacing ratios (s/y) on heat transfer, friction loss, and thermal performance behaviors were examined. The RS-MTTs having different free-spacing ratios (s/y) of 0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0 were tested. Air was utilized as the testing fluid in experiments with Reynolds numbers (Re) spanning from 6000 to 20,000. The utilization of RS-MTTs with s/y = 0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0 augmented heat transfer rates up to 1.74, 1.80, 1.85, 1.90, and 2.15 times given by the plain tube alone while the friction factors increased by 4.22, 4.61, 3.87, and 4.05 times, respectively. At the lowest Reynolds number of 6000, the thermal enhancement factors of the tube containing the RS-MTTs with s/y = 0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0 reached the maximum values of 1.42, 1.35, 1.31, 1.27, and 1.23, respectively. Among the RS-MTTs tested, the RS-MTT with s/y = 0.0 showed the best thermal enhancement factor of 4.56%, corresponding to the heat transfer augmented of 11.52% with a friction penalty of 8.71%.
