Item type:Publication, Analysis and Comparison of Characteristics for Offline PD Measurements in Turbo-Generators at Different Test Time Intervals(2022-01-01) ;Dorkmai, K.; ;Tattiwong, K. ;Maneerot, S.Partial discharge (PD) measurement is widely used for the condition assessment of high voltage equipments. It is a tool to detect the localized discharges occurring in the weakness point sites, which causes deterioration that can lead to failure. Hence, it is essential to diagnose the PD behavior to prevent the consequent failure which maybe takes place. This paper presents an analysis of the offline PD measurements performed on the stator winding insulation system of three turbo-generators which consist of a hydrogen-cooled generator rate of 211.75 MVA, 15.75 kV, and two air-to-water heat-cooled generators which the same rate of 50.8 MVA, 11.5 kV, which were located in the power plant. Firstly, the offline PD measurements of these generators have been energized to the star point side and the high voltage coupling capacitor is installed on the high voltage terminal side, according to IEC 60034-27-1. Additionally, the test voltages were applied to the test object with a step voltage profile. To analyze the PD behaviors of the stator winding insulation, the PD characteristics such as the PD pulses, PD magnitude, and phase-resolved PD (PRPD) patterns were monitored and recorded. Besides, the effect of applied test voltage-time, i.e., 1, 3, and 5 minutes, on such characteristics were reported and compared. Finally, the PD behavior of the stator winding insulation of these generators showed clearly different results for PD measured at different recording times. The highly fluctuating PD magnitude and PD pulse shape at the initial duration of the measurement, and then gradually decreases to convergence to a stable charge magnitude as the test-time increases. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Investigation of Dielectric Response in a 22/0.4 kV Distribution Transformer: Effects of Moisture Content(2024-01-01) ;Daengdee, Danaiwat; ; ;Chumpiboon, KominJeenmuang, SiwakornTransformers play a crucial role in power systems, ensuring efficient energy transmission and distribution. This research focuses on a 22/0.4 kV transformer decommissioned after over 20 years of service. The study involves draining the transformer oil completely and refilling it with oil characterized by known moisture content and breakdown voltage levels until reaching normal operating conditions. The objective is to study the effects of increased moisture content on the dielectric response within the actual structure of the transformer. Diagnostic measurement techniques, including Frequency Domain Spectroscopy (FDS) and Polarization Depolarization Current (PDC), are utilized to evaluate the insulation condition of the transformer. FDS provides information on the dielectric response over a wide frequency range, while PDC assesses the polarization and depolarization behavior of the insulation material. These techniques offer valuable information on the ageing and moisture content of the insulation. Item type:Publication, The Experiment of VLF Tanδ on Service-aged MV Underground Cable(2024-01-01) ;Tangthanam, Worasak; ; ;Udomluksananon, PattJeenmuang, SiwakornThis paper presents the service-aged MV underground cable experiment using very low frequency (VLF) testing. The underground cables in this experiment have been utilized in service for more than 10 years and subjected to TEAM stresses, particularly with moisture, throughout the service time. So, the effect of moisture leads these cables to bad condition. The cables under the experiments are both service-aged and unaged. These cables were prepared the same by peeling both end sides of the cables and were terminated with high voltage insulating tape. The VLF test combined with the tangent delta (tanδ) measurement, according to IEEE Std. 400.2-2013 was performed to assess the condition of these cables and compare them with the unaged cable. The test results revealed that according to IEEE standard 400.2-2013, the service-aged underground cables were assessed in Action Required criteria. Still, the unaged underground cable was assessed in the Further Study Required criteria. Moreover, the tanδ values from service-aged underground cables have significant differences, with service-aged underground cables having higher values than unaged cables. Besides, the variation of tanδ data samples at each test voltage level from some underground cables shows a decreasing trend at 1.0U0 and 1.5U0. Nevertheless, the test voltage at 0.5U0 shows the constant trend of tanδ samples. This analyzed result can indicate that the insulation condition has humidity inside the cable insulation. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

The bushings in this paper are five 138 kV OIP bushings and three 550 kV OIP bushings which are out of service already. From the PDC results, capacitance and current trends of both voltage levels were investigated individually. Item type:Publication, Investigation of Very Low Frequency Dissipation Factor of the Contaminated Underground Cable Joints(2020-10-25); ;Hengcharoensuk, Tassana ;Nupinit, Thanapon ;Chusang, KittidechRavangvong, TanachotThis paper presents the characteristics of the contaminated underground cable joints tested by a very low frequency voltage source. The underground cable system used in the experiment was comprised of a 12/20(24) kV underground cable with a cross-section area of 240 mm2, and the length of 6 m. Four different case studies were simulated on the cable joint, i.e., a healthy heat shrink cable joint (case 1), a cable joint with an incision on XLPE surface(case 2), a cable joint contaminated with 20-micron iron powder on XLPE surface(case 3), and a cable joint contaminated with 20-micron copper powder on XLPE surface(case 4). The dielectric dissipation factor, also known as tan δ at very low frequency (0.1Hz) of such underground cable systems, was examined at 0.5 U0, 1 U0, and 1.5 U0, respectively. The very low frequency(VLF) test voltage was applied to the cable specimen, according to IEEE 400.2(2013). The test voltage was recorded and analyzed. It was found that the cable joint contaminated with 20-micron iron powder on XLPE surface had a maximum tan δ. The tan δ value decreased respectively for the cable joint with an incision on XLPE surface and the cable joint contaminated with 20-micron copper powder on XLPE surface. The healthy heat shrink cable joint showed the lowest tan δ. It was clearly shown that the contaminated cable joint caused higher very low frequency tan δ compared with the healthy cable joint. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, The Effects of Coupling and Grounding on the Partial Discharge Pulse Propagation in the Underground Cable(2022-01-01) ;Rojanasunan, W.; ;Jeenmuang, S. ;Mongkolsatitpong, S.When a Partial Discharge (PD) pulse propagates through a cross-bonded (CB) power cable system, such pulse undergoes attenuation and dispersion along a cable. Moreover, the coupling effect occurs when a PD pulse propagates in HV cable joints and CB link lines. This paper aims to study the effects of coupling phenomena and groundings on the PD pulse propagation. The experiments were divided into 3 parts: the experiment for attenuation in the conductor and ground wire, the experiment for coupling effect, and the experiment for different grounding configuration. The experimental setups used a 30 m length of new 33 kV XLPE insulated cable. PD pulses was obtained from a PD calibrator, and the pulses are detected by Radio Frequency Current Transformer at various positions. The knowledge gained from this research should be useful for a deep understanding of pulse propagation and PD source localization in CB power cable systems. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Furan Analysis of Oil Impregnated Paper Aged by Chemical Stress(2020-10-25); ;Atthaphotpong, Kittiphot ;Takboontam, Kriangsak ;Satirapattanakiat, KaninRaphephat, ChiranuwatThe objective of this paper is to study the deterioration of impregnated kraft papers immersed in dielectric liquids under the chemical stress conditions by furan analysis according to ASTM D5837 and IEC 61198. Mineral oil and natural ester (FR3) were liquid used in this study. Kraft paper samples, 3 pieces per each case study, are prepared in rectangle shape with 25.4 ± 0.5 millimeters (1.00 ± 0.02 inches) wide and approximately 254 millimeters (10.0 inches) long according to the ASTM D828 standard. The paper and liquid insulation are heated to dehydrate at 80 °C for 12 hours with 200 mbar pressure, and then they are filled in 200 milliliter bottles and heated with 5 different temperatures being 60 °C, 80 °C, 100 °C, 120 °C and 140 °C respectively. In the case of 120 °C and 140 °C are only conducted with FR3 due to its thermal characteristics. After that, 98% concentration of acetic acid of 2 quantities, 0.04 and 0.08 milliliters, and oxygen (O2) at 1 psi for 1,200 ml, are used for the chemical aging process for 9 days of the test samples before being tested to find furanic compounds. According to the test result, it can be concluded that all 4 factors, temperature, acetic volume, oxygen and moisture, effect on generated furanic compounds of aging paper insulation.
