Dynamic foot plantar measurement platform using optical sensors
Foot plantar pressure is the interface pressures between the foot surface and the supporting surface during daily activities. Pressure information provides valuable insight in gait and posture research for diagnosis diseases, footwear design, sport performance, injury prevention and other applications. In this paper, a dynamic foot plantar pressure measurement platform is proposed suitable for measuring dynamic plantar pressure in real-time with high accuracy and reliability. A Platform has made from steel structure covering with 15 mm acrylic plate with LED strip on the top and surrounding by 3 mm black acrylic to block undesirable light. The optical sensors, the infrared cameras, have connected on Raspberry Pi to process and record plantar pressure frame in avi file using OpenCV library.

In this paper, a micro Doppler shift velocimeter using two nested-microring resonators incorporating two gratings is designed and simulated. Two wavelength light pulse can be generated by a single input wavelength source after travelling through the two defect grating. Whispering gallery mode of light pulses are localized within the nested-microring resonators, which can be used to form the two point probe Doppler shift velocimeter. The shifted frequency (velocity) can be obtained by the difference of optical path length between two point probes, where the relative velocity of Doppler frequency shift velocimeter can be obtained. The light absorption behaviors can also be investigated by the different light output spectrum. The obtained simulation results shows that the relative velocities of the reflection and transmission light intensities are ranged from 104 m/s to 105 m/s, which can be useful for Doppler frequency shift velocimeter and sensors, where the micro-optical device and multi-functions are the advantages.

Optical Spin Generated by a Modified Add-Drop Filter for Network Sensors
    (2014-01-01)
    Yupapin, P. P.
Multiwavelength optical spin generated by using a dark-bright soliton pair within an optical device is proposed, where in this case the modified add-drop optical filter is used to construct and form a PANDA ring resonator. By using the dark-bright soliton pair control, the optical spins can also be constructed, which has an advantage as the dark and bright soliton pair (components) can propagate for long distance without electromagnetic interference. The coupling between soliton pair and metallic waveguide is also established, in which the transverse electric (TE) and magnetic (TM) fields can be detected, which can form the optical spin states, i.e., spin-up and spin-down and use to form the spin sensing applications. Several sensing configurations such as magnetic field, electrical current, and optical phase (wavelength) shift can be formed by using the generated optical spins within the PANDA ring circuit (coated and uncoated rings), which are described in detail here. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved.

We present the improved tunable filter based multispectral imaging system for detecting blood stains on construction materials. Based upon the reflectance and Kubelka Munk absorbance spectra stocked from our previous work, we modify the blood discrimination criteria to make the system more efficient by replacing the old criteria which make use of polynomial fitting with new criteria associated with a few wavelengths images. The newly established criteria are tested to be able to detect blood against other stains almost as efficient as the old criteria, while the number of spectral images required for detecting blood stains are reduced significantly from 64 to 9 spectral images. The reduction of required spectral images will reduce the time needed for image capturing and blood detection criteria application with little sacrificing of the specificity and sensitivity of the system. © 2013 SPIE.

This article proposes and shows that a low-optical-power laser when arranged in a zigzag fashion in a free space can create strong air thermal stress and form a chemical-free optical net that is capable of repelling adult mosquitoes away. Experimental proof of concept using a pointer-like diode-pump solid-state laser (447 nm wavelength and 500 mW maximum) and reflective sheets shows that all 80 adult Aedes albopictus mosquitoes are completely trapped inside the open glass chamber. Most of the adult mosquitoes prefer to stay near the bottom of the open glass chamber as it is cooler than the top part that contains several zigzagging laser beams. Reducing air thermal stress via increasing the spacing between the two adjacent laser beams allows the adult mosquitoes to easily escape out of the zone of the laser beams. © 2012 IEEE.

Cell phone-based two-dimensional spectral analysis for banana ripeness estimation

It is known that when green fruits such as bananas and mangoes grow from the immature to the ripe stages, their color changes from green to yellow. However, once the green fruits are yellow, it is difficult to classify them into the ripe and the overripe stages. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate for the first time a two-dimensional banana ripeness level sensor by using a cell phone. Our key approach relies on simultaneous analysis of two broad-spectral images of the banana under white light and ultraviolet illuminations. Particularly, our selected color ratios from these two broad-spectral images are used for spatially and specifically classifying the whole banana into immature, ripe, and overripe zones. Experimental proof of concept using a smart mobile phone is highlighted, featuring fast response, portability, and ease of implementation. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

Combination of simple chemical and spectroscopic methods for the identification of Thai hom mali rice
    (2009-09-08)

As the Thai Dawk Mali (KDML105) rice variety is popular due to its high sensory after cook, there is an increase in mixing the KDML105 rice with other rice varieties that leads to unqualified KDML105 milled rice products for export and unqualified unmilled rice seeds for next plants. Instead of using traditional time consuming methods based on the disintegration of the rice kernel in an alkali solution and the inspection of rice cooked in boiling water, this paper proposes to analyze the milled rice powder dissolved in our alkali solution via a spectroscopic method. In our study, 0.1 g, 0.2 g, and 0.3 of milled rice powder from four Thai rice varieties, i.e., KDML105, Pathumthani1, Chainat1, and RD6, are selected. Then each milled rice sample is ground and then dissolved in a 10% potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution. At the specified minutes of dissolution, the relative optical transmission spectrum of the milled rice solution in a 500-800 nm wavelength is measured and only its first derivative is used for the identification of the KDML105 milled rice. We find that the use of 0.10 g of the milled rice powder dissolved in our KOH solution for 10 minutes provides the lowest false rejection rate of 15%, indicating that we have a faster approach with less amount of waste produced. With the 0.2-g milled rice powder, 5 minutes of dissolution is needed but with a slightly higher false rejection rate of 18.3%. © 2009 SPIE.
