A solid solution of lead zirconate-lead nickel niobate ceramics, Pb[Zr <inf>1-x</inf>(Ni<inf>1/3</inf>Nb<inf>2/3</inf>)<inf>x</inf>]O<inf>3</inf> (PZNN) with x = 0.0-0.5, was synthesized via the columbite precursor method. The crystal structures as well as the thermal and dielectric properties were investigated in terms of the lead nickel niobate (PNN) concentration. X-ray diffraction indicated that all samples exhibited a single-phase perovskite structure. At room temperature, Pb[Zr<inf>1-x</inf>(Ni<inf>1/3</inf>Nb <inf>2/3</inf>)<inf>x</inf>]O<inf>3</inf> is orthorhombic for a composition where x = 0, rhombohedral for the compositions where x = 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 and pseudo-cubic for compositions where x = 0.4 and 0.5. The results of the addition of lead nickel niobate to the lead zirconate ceramic showed enhancement of the room-temperature dielectric permittivity. Lead nickel niobate substitution also led to lower transition temperatures. Furthermore, this transition from normal to relaxor FE ceramics was typified by a quasi-linear relationship between the diffuseness parameter δ<inf>γ</inf> and the PNN mole fraction x. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Perovskite formation, dielectric and ferroelectric properties of PbZrO 3-Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3 ceramics via a columbite precursor synthetic route
Perovskite structures in the PZ-PNN system with formula (1-x)PbZrO <inf>3</inf>-xPb(Ni<inf>1/3</inf>Nb<inf>2/3</inf>)O<inf>3</inf> with x ≤ 0.0-0.5 are synthesized via the columbite precursor technique. The formation of the perovskite phase in the calcined powders has been investigated as a function of calcination conditions by using thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The complete solid solutions of the perovskite phase of PZ-PNN ceramics were obtained over a wide compositional range. It was observed that for the binary system (1-x)PbZrO <inf>3</inf>-xPb(Ni<inf>1/3</inf>Nb<inf>2/3</inf>)O<inf>3</inf>, the change in the calcination temperature is approximately linear with respect to the PNN content in the range x ≤ 0.0-0.5. With increasing x, the calcination temperature shifts forward to high temperatures. It is seen that optimization of the calcination conditions can lead to a 100% yield of PZ-PNN in a pseudo-cubic phase. The P-E hysteresis loop measurements demonstrated that the ferroelectric properties of the ceramics in the PZ-PNN system changed gradually from normal ferroelectric behavior to relaxor ferroelectric behavior with increasing PNN concentration. In addition, the squareness of the hysteresis loop (R <inf>sq</inf>) decreased quasi-linearly as the molar fraction of PNN increased. The maximum spontaneous polarization (P<inf>s</inf>) and remanent polarization (P<inf>r</inf>) for the x ≤ 0.1 composition were 31.6νCcm-2 and 27.8νCcm-2, respectively. These results clearly show the significance of PNN in controlling the electrical responses of the PZ-PNN system. © IOP Publishing Ltd.

Monodispersed calcium tungstate (CaWO<inf>4</inf>) microspheres were synthesized successfully via a sonochemical process in deionized (DI) water. The functional group and phase formation analyses were carried out using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. XRD revealed that all samples were of pure tetragonal scheelite structure. FT-IR and Raman analysis exhibited a W-O stretching peak of molecular [WO<inf>4</inf>]2-, which related to the scheelite structure. The effect of ultrasonic irradiation times in the sonochemical process was investigated briefly for 1, 5, 15 and 30 min. The shape of the particles was revealed as spherically monodispersed with narrow size distribution and uniform features at the ultrasonic time of 5 min. This study also found that the spherical surface was composed of tightly packed nanosphere subunits. A possible mechanism for the formation of CaWO<inf>4</inf> powders with a different ultrasonic time was discussed in detail. Optical properties showed blue light emission at a wavelength of around 420 nm and an optical energy gap (E<inf>g</inf>) value of 3.32-3.36 eV. This journal is

This work investigated the formation of ZnO nanostructures on ITO substrates prepared by self-seeding hydrothermal synthesis for photoelectrochemical ( PEC) water splitting applications. The hydrothermal parameters, precursor concentration and hydrothermal time, were varied to explore their influences on ZnO crystallinity, morphology, and PEC performance. The combinations of X-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy revealed highly oriented ZnO nanostructures with diverse morphologies, including small granules, nanorods, dense films, and hexagonal platelets. Topographic profiling of the morphological parameters revealed complex relationships between synthesis conditions and nanostructure characteristics, highlighting the importance of considering aggregation phenomena in substrate-based growth. This aggregation led to deviations from conventional crystal growth theory predictions, particularly for grain density and diameter evolution. PEC performance evaluation identified ZnO nanorods as the optimal morphology, exhibiting a photocurrent density of 0.182 mA/cm² at 0 V vs. Ag/AgCl. Further enhancement was achieved by decorating ZnO nanorods with CdS nanoparticles, resulting in a six-fold increase in photocurrent density (1.2 mA/cm²). This improvement is attributed to expanded light absorption and improved charge separation at the CdS/ ZnO interface. Our findings demonstrate the potential of rationally designed ZnO-based nanostructures in the advancement of solar-driven water splitting technologies and provide valuable insights for optimizing PEC systems through precise control of hydrothermal synthesis parameters, consideration of substrate-induced aggregation, and strategies for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting applications.

Electrodes based on low-temperature preparation such as ink jet printing have been famously used in plastic electronic devices. The aim of this work is to investigate the specific properties of composite materials between nanoparticles of indium tin oxide (np-ITO) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) as an alternative electrode for plastic electronic devices. The composite materials were prepared as a function of np-ITO concentration varied from 1 to 20 w/v%. The 1x1 cm2 hybrid electrodes were fabricated by drop casting method on the microscope slide. This method offers many advantages, including simple preparation, low manufacturing cost and short fabricating time. The electrical resistance of the hybrid films was measured using two-probe measurement. Moreover, the surface morphology of the composited film was explored by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results clearly suggest that mixing np-ITO with PEDOT:PSS can significantly improve conductivity of the composited system. Average value of electrical resistance measured from np-ITO, PEDOT:PSS and composite film are 87.58 kΩ, 40.33 kΩ and 393 Ω, respectively. The significant reduction of film resistance can be explained by the conducting paths made up by PEDOT:PSS to connect np-ITO domain.

The solid solution between the antiferroelectric, PbZrO<inf>3</inf> (PZ), and relaxor ferroelectric, Pb(Ni<inf>1/3</inf>Nb<inf>2/3</inf>)O<inf>3</inf> (PNN), was synthesized by the columbite method. The phase structure and phase transition of Pb(Zn<inf>1-X</inf>(Ni<inf>1/3</inf>Nb<inf>2/3</inf>) <inf>x</inf>O<inf>3</inf> (PZNN), where x = 0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.50, were investigated. The samples were kept at the calcination temperature of 900°C for 4 h and at the sintering temperature of 1,150°C for 2 h. Phase formation and phase transition of PZNN were investigated by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermal analysis, respectively. It was found that the structure of sintered pellets is orthorhombic for 0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.10, rhombohedral for 0.20 ≤ x ≤ 0.30 and pseudo-cubic for x = 0.5. DSC measurement shows that in the antiferroelectric (AFE) phase - ferroelectric (FE) phase and FE to paraelectric (PE) phase; phase transformation temperatures decrease with increasing PNN concentration. The AFE-FE phase transformation was detected for compositions 0.00 ≤x≤ 0.08. © 2008 Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Facile sonochemical synthesis of near spherical barium zirconate titanate (BaZr1-yTiyO3; BZT); perovskite stability and formation mechanism

The multicationic oxides of perovskite Ba(Zr,Ti)O<inf>3</inf> were synthesized successfully by the sonochemical method without a calcination step. Detailed exploration considering the role of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentration, synthesis atmosphere, ultrasonic reaction time and precursor concentration on the perovskite phase formation and particle size was presented. It was found that nanocrystals were formed directly before being oriented and aggregated into large particles in aqueous solution under ultrasonic irradiation. The nucleation in the sonocrystallization process was accelerated by the implosive collapse of bubbles, while the crystal growth process was inhibited or delayed by shock waves and turbulent flow created by ultrasonic radiation. A pure complex perovskite phase of spherical shape was formed completely in a short irradiation time without the calcination process. Sonochemical irradiation could accelerate spherical shape formation of the particles significantly. These results provide new insights into the development and design of better nanomaterial synthesis methods.

The morphological properties, e.g. diameter, aspect ratio, and density, of zinc oxide nanorods (ZnO-NRs) can be achieved through the control of seeding film morphology in seed-assisted hydrothermal process. The different morphologies of seeding film made by aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) thin films are obtained by varying the thickness of seeding film. The change of seeding morphology from small granules with (002) plane dominant to platelets with (103) plane dominant leads to the significant change in the morphological formation of ZnO-NRs successively grown on the seeding film. The seeding film containing the dominant plane of (002) and small granules offers vertical-aligned ZnO-NRs with high surface area (high density and respect ratio) attributed to high nucleating density as well as the limit of the lateral growth from the surrounding adjacent nanorods. This work provides the consideration of morphological properties of seeding film.
