    This paper presents the active power control of a BESS to reduce the PV power fluctuation problem by using the ramp rate control technique, including the C-rate parameter for the AC microgrid system applications, by simulating and designing the battery management system (BMS). The suitable power of BESS power rating can be estimated from the power ramp rate (PRR) of the PV power generation system. Based on the simulated results, it is found that high electrical discharge caused the temperature inside the battery to rise higher than that of low-voltage discharge, and with the simulation results from Real Battery Management System Program, the software can control the charging and discharging of BESS's active power and display real-time results via the display screen.

    The aim of this paper is to analyze and propose the installation of a cascaded dv/dt filter for PWM AC drive system with long feeding cable. The effects of installing single and cascaded second order dv/dt filters are investigated and compared. The investigated system is simulated by MATLAB/Simulink program and implemented to substantiate the effectiveness of a cascaded dv/dt filter. Both simulation and experimental results show that the system using the cascaded dv/dt filter can extend the cable length longer than the system using only a single dv/dt filter. © 2011 IEEE.

    The plug and outlet for home appliances in DC low voltage micro-grid system
    This proposed paper introduces the more effectiveness of power transferring in dc micro-grid power distribution in order to comprehend the usage of home appliances. A 300V 5-level diode clamped multilevel is operated as power source for contactless power transfer with a selective harmonic elimination(SHE) technique, and the output is set at 48 V 300W with the efficiency at 92.6%. The converter generates 200 kHz switching frequency to send a highly magnetic coupling through primary coil over ferromagnetic material in tight coupling condition. The paper aims are to eliminate the electric shock, galvanic isolation and arch free in dc to dc power conversion. Additionally, the lower %THD can reduce designed parameters which mean the power density will be increased. The output will be illustrated in both simulation and implementation results.

    ;
    A study of Demand Response (DR) function and Energy management for an electrical vehicle (EV) charger is presented in this paper. The proposed technique is to prevent the electrical system within the rated power by controlling electric vehicle chargers loads to the electrical system. A power management method for limiting the charging current and charging time by using state of charge (SoC) as a priority point index is developed. The power management method is also developed as a calculation algorithm for determining the charging current limit rating for electric vehicle chargers. The simulation model is also developed for validating a DR management function of the electric vehicle charger according to Provincial Electricity Authority of Thailand (PEA) load characteristic data. The results show that the proposed DR function can manage the charging current of each electric vehicle charger appropriately. Also. the proposed technique can prevent the rated power demand of the transformer distribution. The study illustrates that this method is an effective protection for the distribution transformer and can be able to apply as a DR function to manage electrical energy more efficiently.

    (2015-08-17)

    ;
    An electric vehicle (EV) quick charging station using pulse frequency current control technique is developed in this paper. The current source modular converter configuration is used to perform the charging pulses with both positive and negative pulse to achieve time required for an EV which is less than 30 minutes. The positive pulse charge permits the high peak current charge: this will lead to quick charging mode; whereas, the idle state can control battery temperature rise. The frequency used for pulse charge technique can be varied depending on the type and condition of a battery. The use of current source converter can offer the inherit fault tolerance capability and bidirectional power flow. PSIM 9.0.3 is utilized for simulation study and the 50 kW prototype is developed to validate the proposed notion. The simulation and experimental results illustrate that the proposed pulse frequency charging technique requires about 16 minutes to fully charge battery from 20% of SOC at 80% of SOC. The temperature rise of pulse frequency charging technique is less than 4 °C:these can lead to quicker charge and longer battery lifetime. The results suggest that the proposed technique can be applied for an electric vehicle quick charger station.

    Transient stability improvement using coordinated control of solar PVs and solid state transformers
    (2018-11-01)
    Khemmook, Panya
    ;
    An optimization coordinated controller applied for solar farm together with a solid state transformer in order to improve transient stability is presented in this paper. Transient stability issues in a modern electrical power grid represent one of the challenge topics for an electrical engineer because uncertain renewable energy resources (RES) are increased because of a demand for green energy requirement. This increased RES can adversely disturb a terminal voltage; consequently, a damage to electrical equipment can happen. In order to solve a transient response issue, it is possible to use a solid state transformer (SST) or intelligent transformer, used to interface between RES and a power grid. SST consists of a set of converters which can be modulated via the converters to maintain the desired voltage levels; thus, this solution can reduce transient response and power fluctuation concurrently. For this reason, this paper presents a controller design for a solar photovoltaic (SPV), connected to a power grid via SST in order to enhance the quality of power injections from RES to improve transient stability of the electrical system. The optimization of a controller model is proposed by modifying a PI controller from a commercial one. The proposed controller is validated with the standard IEEE 39 buses. The validation scenario of both an uncertainty due to time delay accounting for a range of 425ms-525ms and various solar radiation patterns are also taken into account for the evaluation of a proposed controller performance. Simulation results demonstrate that power fluctuation due to uncertain RES can be mitigated by using the proposed controller. Moreover, in case of large disturbances such as a circuit breaker tripping to open a power line due to a fault, the proposed coordinated control of SPV and SST can satisfactorily perform to suppress severe voltage swings within an electrical device rated voltage limit to protect catastrophe damage. The results suggest that the proposed controllers can be alternative solutions in order to solve a transient stability issue due to uncertain increased RES in a modern power grid.

    A cascaded hybrid multilevel inverter incorporating a reconfiguration technique for low voltage DC distribution applications
    (2016-01-01)
    A cascaded hybrid multilevel inverter including a reconfiguration technique for low voltage dc distribution applications is proposed in this paper. A PWM generation fault detection and reconfiguration paradigm after an inverter cell fault are developed by using only a single-chip controller. The proposed PWM technique is also modified to reduce switching losses. In addition, the proposed topology can reduce the number of required power switches compared to the conventional cascaded multilevel inverter. The proposed technique is validated by using a 3-kVA prototype. The switching losses of the proposed multilevel inverter are also investigated. The experimental results show that the proposed hybrid inverter can improve system efficiency, reliability and cost effectiveness. The efficiency of proposed system is 97.45% under the tested conditions. The proposed hybrid inverter topology is a promising method for low voltage dc distribution and can be applied for the multiple loads which are required in a data center or telecommunication building.

    This proposed paper introduces the application of the inverter air conditioner by using the back to back converter to provide the reactive power during the steady state operation. This technique is used for improving the power factor of the smart home system or to provide the reactive power in the appropriate situation in both of constant reactive power supply and the maximum reactive power supply mode. A 3-phase 38,600 BTU is used for the experimental setup and supported the reactive power back to the utility grid system. The back to back converter is used to with an air conditioner. The propose back to back converter can be controlled using vector control technique for providing desired active and reactive power. The results show that remained power rating during steady state can be use to compensate the reactive power as a function of smart home which can be used to apply with home energy management system (HEMS).
