    Comparison of cost and return for durian farmers on Magik Growth wrapping bag innovation to increase the quality of durian production in Rayong Province, Thailand

    The results of the study revealed that farmers who did not use the Magik Growth durian wrapping bag innovation had total costs of 37,647.48 baht per rai, resulting in an average yield of 1,420.41 kilograms per rai and a net profit of 164,999.25 baht per rai. In contrast, farmers who used the Magik Growth durian wrapping innovation had total costs of 48,724.58 baht per rai, leading to an average yield of 1,420.83 kilograms per rai and a net profit of 195,068.58 baht per rai. There was a significant difference of 0.01 in the average yield between those using and not using the Magik Growth durian wrapping innovation. Fixed costs and break-even yield also showed a statistically significant difference at 0.05. However, total costs, variable costs, production factors, product prices, net profit, and prices showed no statistically significant difference.

    Do behavioral and socio-demographic factors determine consumers’ purchase intention towards traceable organic rice? Evidence from Thailand

    Despite the increased popularity of organic rice in Thailand’s domestic market, little is known about how consumers’ behavioral and socio-demographic factors predict their purchase intention. Grounded on the theory of planned behavior (TPB), this research investigates consumers’ purchase intention for traceable organic rice. Responses were collected from 243 organic rice consumers in a farmers’ market in Chachoengsao Province, Thailand, following a convenience sampling approach. Data were analyzed using factor analysis, multiple linear regression, and one-way ANOVA to determine the factors predicting consumers’ purchase intention and identify any differences with respect to socio-demographic variables. Results reveal that subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, health consciousness, and knowledge of product traceability significantly predict consumers’ intention to purchase traceable organic rice. However, socio-demographic variables — age, income, and education, were found to have no impact on purchase intention. This study’s findings offer theoretical and managerial insights to community enterprises and policymakers to fully understand consumer behavior for organic rice and implement effective marketing strategies and policies.

    Comparative analysis of the technical efficiency of different production systems for rice farming in Eastern Thailand
    Background and Objective: Generally, there are three different rice farming production systems: Farming under the agriculture network, conventional organic rice farming and chemical rice farming. This study estimated the technical efficiency (TE) of different production systems for rice farming in eastern Thailand. Materials and Methods: Chachoengsao and Prachinburi were selected as the study areas. Farm-level data were collected during the 2016-2017 production period from 150 respondents consisting of 58 organic farmers under the Alternative Agriculture Network (AAN), 42 conventional organic rice farmers and 50 chemical rice farmers. A stochastic frontier analysis was employed to analyze the survey data. Results: The results indicated that the technical efficiency scores for organic rice farmers under the AAN had the highest level of efficiency compared to conventional organic rice and chemical rice farmers. The average TE of the farmers under the AAN was approximately 0.733, ranging from 0.375-0.940, while the average TE of the conventional organic rice farmers was approximately 0.669, ranging from 0.103-0.948 and the average TE of the chemical rice farmers was approximately 0.688, ranging from 0.293-0.999. The results indicate that farmers should use high-quality seeds and organic fertilizer to improve the efficiency of organic rice. Conclusion: The findings indicated that the technical efficiency scores for organic rice farmers under the AAN had the highest level of efficiency comparing to conventional organic rice and chemical rice farmers.

    Cost and return analysis of organic and conventional rice production in Chachoengsao Province, Thailand

    The objective of this study was to investigate the cost and return structures of rice cultivation in two farming systems, organic and conventional rice production, in Chachoengsao Province, Thailand, in the 2016/2017 crop year. The sample included 108 farmers selected using a purposive sampling method, consisting of 58 organic rice growers and 50 conventional rice growers. Survey questionnaires were used as the main instrument for data collection. Descriptive statistics and cost and return analysis were used for data analysis. The results indicate that the cost of production was higher, and output was lower under organic rice farming. Despite this, organic rice farming was more profitable than conventional farming, which was attributed to the higher prevailing market price for organic rice. This indicates the importance of price differences across market segments within the distribution channel and the profitability of rice production between the two rice farming systems.

    Factors affecting the sharing of information on quality durian production by farmers in Rayong Province, Thailand

    This study examined the factors influencing information exchange among durian farmers in Rayong Province, Thailand, regarding high-quality production practices. A survey of 54 farmers, equally distributed by gender, revealed an average age of 44.52 years, with most being married and holding at least a bachelor’s degree. The majority cultivated Monthong durian on plots of five rai or larger and had over five years of experience. Farmers applied their knowledge of water and maintenance systems, among other practices. The study findings revealed that motivation levels correlated with the farmers’ propensity to share information. Factors influencing information exchange, ranked from the highest to the lowest average value, were knowledge promotion and development (x̄ = 4.24), marketing (x̄ = 4.00), along with social relations and acceptance (x̄ = 3.46), resulting in a high overall level (x̄ = 3.90). Multiple regression analysis revealed traditional water management wisdom as the sole significant predictor of information-sharing behavior among the 11 variables tested, influencing both knowledge promotion (β = 0.573, p = 0.002) and marketing information sharing (β = 0.467, p = 0.011). Demographic characteristics, farming practices, and other production knowledge had no significant impact on farmers' sharing motivations.

    Strategic guidelines for community enterprise development: a case in rural Thailand

    Purpose: In spite of the government’s support for small-scale rice farmers in rural areas of Thailand, several problems still affect their production and marketing performance. This study aims to assess a rice production community enterprise (RPCE) through an in-depth investigation of its problems and capabilities; and formulate internal strategic guidelines for enterprise development. Design/methodology/approach: This study used a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews with the community enterprise leader and committee members, and focus group discussion with eight farmer-members, purposively selected in Chachoengsao, Thailand. Data were transcribed, sorted and organised to determine themes and patterns. Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) and threats, opportunities, weaknesses and strengths (TOWS) matrix situational analyses were done to develop strategic options. Strategic guidelines were formulated through a final deliberation with all members to ensure strategies aligned with the enterprise’s goals and objectives. Findings: The results have identified three main problem categories encountered by the community enterprise in the areas of membership and labour; production and milling operations; and product design and marketing. The enterprise’s main strengths and opportunities include its product certifications and support from external organisations. Strategic points were developed, and policy support programmes are recommended for capacity building and product development as most problems identified relate to these aspects. Originality/value: The utility of this study is its focus on an RPCE. The findings will help policymakers and concerned government agencies implement better programmes and policies to develop RPCEs. Furthermore, this study will be a source for future qualitative literature that will provide helpful information to other studies aiming to develop other types of community enterprises (CEs).

    The opinions on factors affecting the use of web-based learning by quality durian farmers in Rayong Province, Thailand

    The majority of farmers who used the web-based learning system were male, aged 38.45 years, had lower than a bachelor’s degree, cultivated durian planting areas of more than five rai, had more than five years of experience in durian planting, accessed a learning channel on durian production through an application, frequently accessed media less than five times per day, and spent an average of less than five hours per day accessing online media. Farmers' opinions indicated that benefits and applications had the highest impact on web-based learning adoption (x̄ = 4.56), followed by content (x̄ = 4.41), design (x̄ = 4.40), and efficiency (x̄ = 4.26). Multiple regression analysis revealed that media access frequency (β = 0.29) and durian growing experience (β = 0.20) significantly predicted farmers' perceptions of design factors. These same variables strongly influenced content factors, with access frequency (β = 1.60) and growing experience (β = 0.78) as significant predictors. For usability factors, only education level emerged as significant (β = 0.18), while no demographic characteristics significantly influenced farmers' perceptions of WBL benefits and applications.

    Determinants influencing the adoption of the windy.com application among large-scale durian farmers’ groups in Rayong Province, Thailand

    The findings found that farmers who participated in training and utilised the Windy.com application, the majority of participants were male, aged between 51 and 60 years, with a bachelor’s degree and an average household size of 3–4 members. The farmers possessed 1–15 years’ experience in durian cultivation, with farm sizes ranging from 1 to 25 rai. The average durian yield was approximately 1,000–2,000 kilograms per rai, with an average market price of 91–120 Baht per kilogram. Participants demonstrated a high level of knowledge (µ = 81.20) and exhibited a positive attitude towards the Windy.com application (mean = 3.91), with the highest attitude score observed in the content dimension (µ = 4.08). Overall, the adoption of the application was rated as high (µ = 4.09), particularly concerning their intention to use it (µ = 4.23) and perceived usefulness (µ = 4.06). Multiple regression analysis reveals attitude to be the most significant predictor of adoption (β = 0.67, p < 0.01), suggesting that improved attitudes among farmers increased their adoption of the application. Conversely, factors such as farming experience and farm size was significantly influenced adoption (p > 0.05). The results imply that promoting positive attitudes and providing effective training can significantly enhance farmers’ long-term adoption and utilisation of digital applications.

    Production Performance and Adoption Opinion Toward Wet and Dry Farming of GAP and Non-GAP Farmers in Suburban Bangkok, Thailand
    Technology adoption requires technical information to support decision-making and encourage broader acceptance. Recognizing the significance of alternate wetting and drying technology in sustainable agriculture, this study aims to promote the adoption of this technology among both Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and non-GAP farmers in Suburban, Bangkok, Thailand. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire, which gathered information on farmers' cost and return values, as well as their adoption opinions. The collected data were then analyzed using cost and return analysis, as well as stochastic frontier analysis. The results indicate that non-GAP farmers face significantly higher total costs due to increased fixed costs compared to GAP farmers. While there were no significant differences in yield between the two groups, GAP farmers achieved significantly higher total income and net profit due to lower total costs and higher selling prices. Furthermore, the analysis suggests that both groups of rice farmers have the potential to improve their efficiency levels, with non-GAP farmers showing a higher potential for improvement. In terms of adoption opinion, both farmer groups recognize the advantages of wet and dry farming technology over traditional flooded rice farming. This study highlights that the adoption levels of both GAP and non-GAP farmers can be significantly improved through the implementation of best management practices. Overall, the findings emphasize the importance of trustworthy information dissemination to encourage the adoption of wet and dry farming technology, as it enhances farmers' trust in the received information and their engagement with the technology. The study concludes by providing policy implications and recommendations to promote the wider adoption of wet and dry farming technology.

    Community enterprise quality management of durian exports in Ban Khao Hin Thaen, Wang Chan District, Rayong Province, Thailand

    Results showed that most farmers interviewed in this study (40.40%) were aged 51–60, and 43.90% had 1–10 years of durian cultivation experience. Around 82.50% of farmers possessed Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) standard certificates, indicating high compliance. The study of knowledge in durian quality management aligned with the standards of GAP. Considering the average of all eight factors, the highest accuracy rates were revealed in production process management (88.89%) and data recording (84.80%). Other factors receiving correct answer scores ranged from 60.23 to 75.44%. The levels of operation in managing durian markets across the 8Ps framework for product, personnel, process, physical characteristics, efficiency, and quality were relatively high, with an average score ranging from 3.57 to 4.39. On the other hand, the factors relating to price, distribution, and marketing promotion were relatively low, with an average score ranging from 2.87 to 3.39. The average scores for each factor relating to durian quality management for export were as follows: planning (94.04%), production operation (94.74%), and resource management (90.35%). In conclusion, the quality management, marketing, and key influencing factors of durian were carefully considered by the members of the community enterprise under study. These findings can be used to guide strategies to improve durian cultivation and marketing, ensuring high-quality products that meet export standards. To enhance durian exports, policymakers and practitioners should consider support and training in the areas where farmers face challenges.
