This article presents a novel approach to supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) design that emphasizes interoperability through edge integration, using Node-RED as an open-source programming platform deployed on an industrial edge computer. The proposed architecture integrates multiple-vendor programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and an Internet of Things (IoT) gateway at the edge layer to enable seamless interoperability across local control systems. A lab-scale case study demonstrates the feasibility of this integration, featuring four remote terminal units (RTUs) communicating concurrently with a SIMATIC IPC327G edge computer via standard protocols. Specifically, a SIMATIC S7-1200 (RTU-1), MELSEC iQ-F FX5U (RTU-2), and CompactLogix 1769-L30ER (RTU-3) control an object sorting station, a parcel sorting station, a water temperature control station, respectively, while a UG65 gateway (RTU-4) enables bidirectional data transfer between the edge computer and LoRaWAN devices. The inclusion of InfluxDB alongside Node-RED supports data logging and reporting functionalities. By distributing protocol translation, data processing, and shop-floor supervisory control to the edge layer, the architecture achieves real-time, vendor-neutral data orchestration while maintaining compatibility with a higher-level SCADA master terminal unit (MTU) or cloud system. Experimental results from both functional and performance testing confirm the system’s viability as a cost-effective, vendor-agnostic solution for modern industrial automation, offering a scalable model for multi-protocol industrial environments.

Applying radar chart for process control behavior
This paper presents the technique to show the controller parameters value that can support decision making of controller action and instruments, actuator operation. In addition, energy consumption is detected of any points of process operation. The paper describes method to detect and collect the assigned process control parameters from process components then display their parameters by radar chart. All of assigned parameters are used to construct the plotted of radar figure. The paper designs background and foreground by representation with rectangular array and length of each spoke in radar chart is proportional to magnitude of set value(SV), manipulate value(MV), process value(PV) of PID controller parameters. In addition, watt power (W) of energy consumption in the process is detected and stored. Each spoke of radar chart represents each parameter that converts to scale as 0-100%. The script functions are developed at the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) station to detect, collect and scale, then store detected parameters in database. The experiments perform in case study of level loop control of water tank processes by using a proportion-integral-derivative (PID) function in the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and Wonderware InTouch SCADA software. The technique can apply for exiting SCADA to create the radar chart. Nevertheless, the new version of SCADA software can support the feature but it depends on cost license fee. Moreover, the technique can support the operators and engineers to make decision of process devices performance (instrument, actuator, controller), process operation and condition.

    Sasaki, Hlrofumi
This article presents a, simple circuit technique based on commerciallyavailable devices to realize current controlled, oscillator (CCO) with twolow-impedance input terminals. By suitably setting two input signals, the linearfrequency-current relation of the proposed CCO can be either positive ornegative slope in the same circuit configuration. The oscillating outputfrequency linearly proportional to the difference between two input currents canbe obtained. The realization method is employed in second-generation currentconveyors (CCIIs) and, Set-Reset (S-R) latch. Experimental results verifyingperformances of the proposed, CCO are closely agreed, with expected, values. Toshow the usefulness of the proposed, oscillator, an application example incurrent-mode variable- frequency control for buck converter is also included.ICIC International © 2010.

Hmi implementation using radar chart for dual-loop system
This article presents a method to implement the Human Machine Inter-face (HMI) for providing high visibility of dual-loop system to encourage good operations and maintenance practices. The proposed method is based on the employment of radar chart to display key performance metrics of simultaneous and independent control of two identical loops for extensive event monitoring. Two level control loops utilizing two Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) function blocks of a single Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) are used as the case study to show the workability of the proposed HMI implementation. Each loop consists of a transmitter for measuring the controlled level an inverter for inverting the PLC output to adjust a pump speed, and a power meter form easuring the pump power consumption. The transmitter outputs from both control loops are applied to the PLC analog input module, and then separately scaled to be available to each PID block. The PLC analog output module is used to pass the PID block outputs for manipulating inlet flow rates. The performance metrics including the set point, process variable, manipulated variable, and pump power consumption of both control loops are detected and collected by the HMI/Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA)station. All detected data of four performance metrics are represented on the axes of radar chart in real time by using the Wonder ware In Touch software. The script functions to save and load the specified data to the SQL server database are also created on the HMI/SCADA station. Experimental results confirm that the proposed HMI implementation can function correctly.

In the field of portable electronic devices, a small and light AC-DC converter or AC adapter has been required in these last few decades. To meet such demands, a switched-capacitor (SC) AC-DC converter draws many researchers’ attentions in recent years. It is known that the SC AC-DC converter can realize smaller size and lighter weight than transformer-based AC-DC converters, because no magnetic component is required to design the SC AC-DC converter. In previous studies, several AC-DC converters succeeded in downsizing and light-weighting by using SC techniques. However, the power efficiency of conventional SC AC-DC converters is still low, and their control method is complicated. To overcome these problems, a step-down SC AC-DC converter with double conversion topology is proposed in this paper. The proposed converter consists of a full waveform rectifier with a big capacitor and two converter blocks. In each converter block, the 1/3 × step-down conversion is performed by connecting three capacitors in series, where electric charges stored in these capacitors are averaged by using series-connected flying capacitor. By connecting these converter blocks in series, the 1/9 × step-down conversion is realized by controlling power switches by non-overlapped two-phase clock pulses. Therefore, unlike the conventional converters using multiphase clock pulses, the proposed converter can achieve not only simple circuit control but also small ripple noise. Furthermore, the reduction of output ripple leads to the improvement of power efficiency. To help readers’ understanding for the proposed converter, first, a simple four equivalent circuit of the proposed converter is derived theoretically. The characteristics of the proposed converter are clarified by the theoretical analysis. Then, in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed converter, the proposed converter is implemented by simulated program with integrated circuit emphasis (SPICE) simulator. The validity of the theoretical results is confirmed by the SPICE simulation. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed converter is confirmed by experiments implemented on a breadboard.

This paper presents the partial discharge (PD) test on a 22 kV underground cable having a simulated defect within the XLPE insulation. The defects were simulated using the nail, as the drill bits with a different drill diameter. The defect was created into the XLPE insulation layers of the underground cable. Besides, both end sides of the cable were electric field controlled. To simulate the defects for the experiment, the jacket in the middle of the cable was partially trimmed out, and the drill bits was driven through the insulation screen to the insulation layer. The diameter of the drill bits was controlled for each experiment. The PD experiment was conducted using high frequency current transformer (HFCT) sensor as an unconventional PD detection instrument. From analyzing the PD test results, a defect in the XLPE insulation causes vividly the PD inside the XLPE insulation. Consequently, the insulation gradually deteriorates undergoing the PD events. Moreover, the PD test results indicate that the larger diameter of the nail tip radius results in a higher PD magnitude than that generated by a smaller diameter.

Smart coffee vending machine based on IoT concept
In order to improve the effectiveness of franchise system, this paper describes how to utilize the Internet of Things (IoT) concept for upgrading a franchisor’s traditional coffee vending machine to be a smart coffee vending machine (SCVM) with remote monitoring and control capabilities. The IoT-based SCVM provides powerful web dashboard to monitor machine operation statuses, track ingredient and component availability, and adjust hot drink recipes. The proposed improvement can therefore help both franchisor and franchisee not only to ensure that how well the machine is operating, and how well the machine is stocked but also to plan that when a supply worker needs to pay a visit to the machine for refilling ingredients based on sales data, and when a maintenance worker needs to pay a visit to the machine for providing services based on technical data. The proposed technique uses an Arduino board to replace an existing machine controller and installs a Raspberry Pi module to perform as a gateway for data transmission between the SCVM and the Ubidots cloud server via Internet. The Node-RED engine running on the Raspberry Pi is utilized as the IoT platform to collect and process the technical and sales data of the SCVM that dispenses three kinds of hot drinks. Based on user login system, the franchisor is allowed to remotely monitor the interested parameters of all SCVMs on the created dashboard for ensuring product availability as well as to remotely control the ratios of instant coffee/cocoa powder and hot water for ensuring product quality, whereas each franchisee is allowed to remotely monitor the operation status and daily sales detail for his approved machines only. Test results from data simulations confirm that the upgraded SCVM and created dashboard subpages function correctly in accordance with the franchisor’s requirements.

This paper presents a practical technique to design and implement the Inter- net-based system for remotely monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs) in operation of vacuum pans for sugar crystallization by using supervisory control and data acquisi- tion (SCADA) software, which provides web-enabled human machine interface (HMI). The remote monitoring system for the DECHAROEN™ continuous vacuum pans is de- scribed as an illustrative case study to verify the proposed technique performance. At the remote site, the programs (or script functions) based on web services were developed for detecting and collecting the KPIs in the text file format from the operator workstation of the host system in the raw sugar plant. The created text files are transferred to the data center through the Internet. At the data center, the database was created using XAMPP software, and the website and web pages were built using HTML and CSS. The proposed system can be useful in performance analysis for continuous quality improvement. Experimental results demonstrating the proposed monitoring system are also included.
