Item type:Publication, Fast and Effective Technique in Evaluation of Lightning Impulse Voltage Parameters(2021-01-01); ;Kitwattana, KritThis paper presents an approach for the waveform parameter evaluation of lightning impulse voltage in high voltage tests according to the IEC standards. Such waveform parameters are composed of peak voltage (U<inf>p</inf>), front time (T<inf>1</inf>), time to half (T<inf>2</inf>), and the overshoot rate (B<inf>e</inf>). An artificial neural network with a back-propagation learning algorithm was applied to determine a base curve and its parameters from 14 points along the recorded waveform between 20% of the peak voltage on the wave front part to 40% of the peak voltage on the wave tail part. The 29 waveforms recommended by the standard were used in the training process of the development of the network model, and some experimental cases were also utilized for verification of the proposed method. It is found that the waveform parameters evaluated by the proposed approach are in the tolerances of the standard requirements. Maximum absolute deviations of U<inf>p</inf>, T<inf>1</inf>, T<inf>2</inf>, and B<inf>e</inf> are 0.06%, 2.00%, 0.12%, and 0.79%, respectively. Due to that no iteration process in the proposed approach is required, the efficiency in calculation process is significantly faster than the standard recommended approach. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Comparative Fault Detection Between DWT and STFT in Overcurrent Relays(2024-01-01) ;Chiradeja, Pathomthat; ;Lertwanitrot, Praikanok; This study proposes a protection relay using a microcontroller to detect and classify faults in transmission lines based on the Wavelet transform. An experimental model was constructed from an actual 115 kV transmission system prototype. The current signal was observed based on the fault type, phase, and position. Clark's transform and the discrete Wavelet transform (DWT) were applied to transform signals for analysis. The positive and zero sequences obtained from Clark's transform were used for fault detection and fault classification, respectively. Moreover, the performances between the DWT and the short-time Fourier Transform (STFT) were compared in terms of accuracy and processing time. In addition, the double-detection technique was used to confirm the accuracy of fault detection. Results show that the proposed method is efficient for fault detection and classification. This finding allows the researcher to choose the appropriate analytical method. Moreover, it can also be used as the basis for overcurrent relay algorithm design in the effort to develop more advanced technologies. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Partial Discharge Measurement Based on an Inductive Mode Air-Core Sensor(2020-03-01) ;Paophan, Busayapol; In this paper, an alternative technique for partial discharge (PD) measurement using an air-core sensor is proposed. The air-core sensor consists of an inductive mode air-core coil and the appropriate additional resistor. The approach for inductive mode enhancement of an air-core coil is presented. In the inductive mode operation, an output voltage which is proportional to an induced voltage from the air-core coil is utilized to determine PD currents and charges by a numerical integration. In the design process of the air-core sensor, parameter estimation with a computation algorithm is employed for extracting unknown circuit parameters of the air-core coil from a unit step response. These estimated parameters are crucial in an effective design of the PD measuring system. With the design circuit parameters, experiments in PD measurement were performed. From experimental results, the developed system has promising performance, and the sensitivity is in the range of a few picocoulombs. From this achievement, the proposed technique is a choice in PD measurement for high-voltage equipment in the laboratory and in the on-site measurement. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, The Study of Polarization and Depolarization Current Measurements on Service-Aged 22 kV XLPE Underground Cables with Presence of Water Trees(2022-01-01) ;Udomluksananon, P.; ;Maneerot, S.; This paper represents the condition assessment of service-aged 22 kV XLPE insulated underground cables. From the investigation, the water trees were detected in the insulation layer. The visual inspection of underground cables reveals the presence of copper carbonate contaminated on the copper tape layer. Some underground cables have the discontinuity of the copper tape layer. To evaluate the insulation condition of the underground cables, the polarization and depolarization current (PDC) measurements were performed on both the service-aged and the new (or unused) cables. The underground cables to experiment with the length of insulation screen equal to 1 m were prepared. In this research, the PDC measurements were performed on different aspects, i.e., the testing voltages (600 V, 800 V, and 1000 V), the testing positions, the effect of the discontinuity of the copper tape layer which occurred during service, the influence of the presence of copper carbonate, and the influence of water trees in XLPE cables. The dielectric response of the underground cables by using polarization and depolarization current measurements can diagnose the problems in service-aged underground cables, but this paper needs more test data for accurate interpretation. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Transient Analysis to Distinguish Mechanically Switched Capacitors Using Discrete Wavelet Transform and Artificial Intelligence(2026-01-01) ;Thongsuk, Surakit ;Bunjongjit, Sulee; ; Capacitor banks are widely used in modern power systems for reactive power compensation and voltage regulation. However, switching operations of mechanically switched capacitors (MSCs) can generate transient phenomena, such as inrush currents, which may resemble fault currents and lead to misoperation of protection systems. Therefore, accurate detection and classification of transient events are essential for reliable system operation. This study proposes a hybrid approach for transient signal analysis and classification by integrating the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) with artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, including probabilistic neural networks and fuzzy inference systems (FIS). The DWT performs time–frequency analysis to extract multi-scale wavelet features from three-phase current signals. The proposed method enables both discrimination between inrush and fault currents and multi-class classification of transient events among six capacitor switching conditions, namely base case, pre-insertion resistor, pre-insertion inductor, current limiting reactor, 6% reactor, and synchronous closing. The methodology is validated using PSCAD/EMTDC simulations under isolated and back-to-back capacitor switching scenarios. The results demonstrate that the proposed DWT–AI approach achieves high classification accuracy exceeding 95%, outperforming conventional methods based on DWT alone and DWT combined with FIS. Furthermore, the proposed method improves protection system performance by reducing false tripping caused by transient inrush currents, while maintaining reliable fault detection capability. The findings confirm that integrating time–frequency signal processing with AI-based classification provides an effective and practical solution for transient event discrimination in MSC capacitor bank systems. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Impact on Protective Device Sequence of Operation in Case Distributed Generation Integrated to Distribution System(2023-07-01); ;Kotesakha, Wikorn; This study aims to evaluate the impact of the distributed generator (DG) connection to the grid. The simulated results present the parameters of the system required to install DG on the end of the main distribution feeder. Various parameters, such as voltage, current, and protective relay coordination are modelled after the actual provincial electricity authority (PEA) distribution system. Various case studies compared the coordination without and with DG connections to the grid by finding the difference of protective devices. The results indicate that the malfunction can be fixed in order of priority protective devices, which operate according to the parameter setting. Additionally, the coordinate functions between the recloser and fuse devices in both phase and ground configurations in the operating zone prevented the drop-out fuse melting or burning out. Based on the result, this problem is fixed by providing a directional recloser device and increasing the fuse-link rated with 40k installation for replacing the conventional sizing, which can improve the performance in case of fault occurrence to investigate the reliability and stability of the distribution system. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Dielectric response analysis for cable joint problems in medium voltage underground cable system(2020-01-01) ;Klienhom, Sitthisak ;Boonsaner, Nutthaphan ;Nimsanong, Phethai; This paper represents the investigation of dielectric response analysis of a cable system composed of a medium voltage XLPE underground cable, a heat-shrink cable joint and a heat-shrink cable termination. A 12/20(24) kV single core XLPE underground cable with the nominal cross-section area of 240 mm2, three pieces of 22 kV cable joints, and eight pieces of 22 kV cable termination were prepared for the experiment. Then, polarization and depolarization current (PDCs) measurement were performed. The experiments were divided into two parts. The first part was composed series of three tests, A — C, and the second part consisted series of two tests, D — E, as follows: Test A examined dielectric response of a 6 m healthy XLPE underground cable, Test B examined dielectric response of a 6 m healthy XLPE underground cable with two healthy cable terminations, Test C examined dielectric response of a two of 3 m healthy XLPE underground cable with healthy cable terminations connected by a healthy cable joint, Test D used the test object similarly as case C but the cable joint was contaminated with copper particles, and Test E used the test object similarly as case C but the cable joint was contaminated with tiny pieces of water blocking. From the experiment, the PDCs and the derived dielectric parameters such as geometrical capacitance, insulation resistance, polarization index, depolarization index, charge difference curve and charge ratio curve were analyzed. The PDCs and the derived parameters were found different for each case of study as details in this paper. Besides, the charge ratio proposed by authors is a valuable parameter for the diagnosis of insulation system of high voltage equipment. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Effective simulation approach for lightning impulse voltage tests of reactor and transformer windings(2020-10-16) ;Tuethong, Piyapon; In this paper, an effective simulation method for lightning impulse voltage tests of reactor and transformer windings is presented. The method is started from the determination of the realized equivalent circuit of the considered winding in the wide frequency range from 10 Hz to 10 MHz. From the determined equivalent circuit and with the use of the circuit simulator, the circuit parameters in the impulse generator circuit are adjusted to obtain the waveform parameters according to the standard requirement. The realized equivalent circuits of windings for impulse voltage tests have been identified. The identification approach starts from equivalent circuit determination based on a vector fitting algorithm. However, the vector fitting algorithm with the equivalent circuit extraction is not guaranteed to obtain the realized equivalent circuit. From the equivalent circuit, it is possible that there are some negative parameters of resistance, inductance, and capacitance. Using such circuit parameters from the vector fitting approach as the beginning circuit parameters, a genetic algorithm is employed for searching equivalent circuit parameters with the constraints of positive values. The realized equivalent circuits of the windings can be determined. The validity of the combined algorithm is confirmed by comparison of the simulated results by the determined circuit model and the experimental results, and good agreement is observed. The proposed approach is very useful in lightning impulse tests on the reactor and transformer windings. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Applications of a high frequency current transformer and air-core inductive devices for detecting a partial discharge location in a cable(2020-01-01) ;Paophan, Busayapol; This paper presents applications of partial discharge sensing devices for detecting a partial discharge location in a cable. Three devices are under investigated. The first type is a high frequency current transformer (HFCT), while other two types are air core inductive devices with different configuration. The high frequency current transformer is constructed from a ferromagnetic material core, and the winding conductor is in a single compensation form. The first air core inductive device is wound in a single compensation pattern, and uses the return winding in the form of a copper sheet. The second air core inductive device, differently, is in a counter wound compensation pattern. In experiments, a partial discharge sensing device is installed at one end of the cable. The standard pulse calibrator is employed to inject partial discharge pulses at the designated locations along the cable. The Time Domain Reflectometry technique (TDR), which is based on the travelling wave theory, is employed in calculating the partial discharge locations. It is found that these three current transducers can detect the partial discharge pulses, and with the algorithm, which is developed using the Time Domain Reflectometry, the partial discharge location along the cable can be identified accurately. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Application of Neutral Grounding Resistor in High Voltage Photovoltaic Solar Substation System(2025-01-01) ;Pothosarn, Chaichan ;Patcharoen, Theerasak ;Srisuksai, Panu; Faults in a distribution system with additional renewable energy sources can lead to unnecessary operation of protection devices due to higher detected fault currents compared to conventional systems. In addition, the voltage at the point of interconnection may temporarily drop to a low level, causing inverter-based generators to disconnect from the system. This study, therefore, proposes an investigation into the use of neutral grounding resistors in a 115 kV high-voltage (HV) substation unit located within a solar power generation system. The approach aims to limit ground fault current and reduce temporary voltage sags to maintain the connection status of inverter and ensure compliance with low voltage fault ride-through (LVRT) capability. The case study is modeled after an actual grid network consisting of two feeders, with one feeder connected to a solar power plant. PowerFactory DIgSILENT software is used to simulate the system and analyze the impact of various neutral grounding resistance values. The results of this study can be applied to the selection of neutral grounding resistors for system, helping to reduce fault current, extend relay operating time within the allowable delay range, and minimize unnecessary tripping of overcurrent protection relays in the system.
